Fanfiction Authors: HEADS UP

(Non-authors, please RB to signal boost to your author friends!)

An astute reader informed me this morning that one of my fics (Children of the Future Age) had been pirated and was being sold as a novel on Amazon:

(And they weren't even creative with their cover design. If you're going to pirate something that I spent a full year of my life writing, at least give me a pretty screenshot to brag about later. Seriously.)

I promptly filed a DMCA complaint to have it removed, but I checked out the company that put it up -- Plush Books -- and it looks like A LOT of their books are pirated fic. They are by no means the only ones doing this, either -- the fact that """publishers""" can download stories from AO3 in ebook format and then reupload them to Amazon in just a few clicks makes fic piracy a common problem. There are a whole host of reasons why letting this continue is bad -- including actual legal risk to fanfiction archives -- but basically:

IF YOU ARE A FANFIC AUTHOR WITH LONG AND/OR POPULAR WORKS, PLEASE CHECK AMAZON TO SEE IF YOUR STORIES HAVE BEEN PIRATED.

You can search for your fics by title, or by text from the description (which is often just copied wholesale from AO3 as well). If you find that someone has stolen your work and is selling it as their own, you can lodge a DMCA complaint (Amazon.com/USA site; other countries have different systems). If you haven't done this before, it's easy! Here's a tutorial:

HOW TO FILE A COPYRIGHT COMPLAINT FOR STOLEN WORK ON AMAZON.COM:

First, go to this form. You'll need to be signed into your Amazon account.

Select the radio buttons/dropdown options (shown below) to indicate that you are the legal Rights Owner, you have a copyright concern, and it is about a pirated product.

Enter the name of your story in the Name of Brand field.

In the Link to the Copyrighted Work box, enter a link to the story on AO3 or whatever site your work is posted on.

In the Additional Information box, explain that you are the author of the work and it is being sold without your permission. That's all you really need. If you want, you can include additional information that might be helpful in establishing the validity of your claim, but you don't have to go into great detail. You can simply write something like this:

I am the author of this work, which is being sold by [publisher] without my permission. I originally published this story in [date/year] on [name of site], and have provided a link to the original above. On request, I can provide documentation proving that I am the owner of the account that originally posted this story.

In the ASIN/ISBN-10 field, copy and paste the ID number from the pirated copy's URL. You'll find this ten-digit number in the Amazon URL after the word "product," as in the screenshot below. (If the URL extends beyond this number, you can ignore everything from the question mark on.) Once this number has been added, Amazon will pull the product information automatically and add it to the complaint form, so you can check the listing title and make sure it's correct.

Finally, add your contact information to the relevant fields, check the "I have read and accept the statements" box, and then click Submit. You should receive an email confirmation that Amazon has received the form.

Please share this information with your writer friends, keep an eye out for/report pirated works, and help us keep fanfiction free and legally protected!

If you wish to take out a commission by me, please proceed under the cut to get the rundown over my rules and what I work with. If you are not interested, you may continue on with your day!

Before you think about a commission, please keep in mine the things I am and am not willing to do. Here you can find fandoms I aware of, but if you want a different one than on that list, please be specific with the fandom and the character.

Ordering Your Commission-

Once you have an idea about what you want to order, you need to email me with the email attached below. Be sure to clearly state 1. The name of your character (including what media they come from and reference pictures if they are your own original characters) 2. The exact way you want the commission to look, including what ‘level’ you want it to be and 3) If there are any add-ons that you want to add.

Payment-

After emailing me about your request, I will send you an estimate about the final price. These commissions are payed by hour, so I will average my time on all pieces I have done to give you a price. THIS PRICE IS NOT FINAL. These prices change based on certain aspects, including the final time I have spent on the full piece.

For example, if a full body rendered piece is ordered, and I plan on spending 4 hours on the piece, I will tell you the piece will be around $80. If I then spend more hours than expected, the price will go up. Please do not fight me on the prices, because these are non-negotiable. If I do say there is a sale, then these will be applied once the piece is FINNISHED. Not before.

Extra Fees-

In addition to the piece itself, there may be extra fees that I will charge a client an additional fee for. The fees are as followed:

Complex Backgrounds: White, simple, or transparent backgrounds (your choice) comes free of charge with the work. Anything outside of that will be charged- $5

Additional Characters: Adding another character to a piece- $5

Post-approval Changes: I will contact you when I have concept sketches done, and you will have to approve them before I continue. If I get the approval, and contact you again when the inking or flats are done, and you change your mind or what it different (outside of minor details like eye color or freckles or something) I have to start again, which is more time that it takes for me to finish the piece- $5 to $15 depending on how far into the piece I am when you change your mind, and if the piece I am working on is complex.

The final product!

This full piece took me 35 hours, over 6 days to complete. It turned out better than expected, and you can see the work I put into it. I am very happy with hour this turned out.

I will be working on other things after this, an hopefully open commissions for you all to have your own works from me.

Day 6 of 6: Final

There isn’t much to look at this time around, just the background and eye shines. But, the redraw is finished, and should be published at the same time as my speed-paint on YouTube. Keep an eye out on my Instagram for alerts about it. That should be in a few days.

I really am excited for the next and final (sadly) season of The Owl House, but Dana and the team have not let us down yet, and I know that the three specials we are getting as a season will be amazing.

Day 5 of 6: Luz

I don’t think I’m completely satisfied with Luz, to be honest. The jackets opening is to wide, and the ‘e’ patch looks funny, but I think that if I would have tried to continue, I would have never been finished. I think that’s a good lesson to learn, when to call it quits and give people what you have.

But off of that subject, the final part, which is everything besides the kids, should be done either tomorrow or the next day, and then I will post the reveal of the full picture when I release the Speed-paint on my YouTube. I’m just evil like that.

But, I will be releasing something it the timeframe between the final part to this, and the speed-paint on YouTube. Something that has… a Scarlet energy to it.

Day 4 of 6: Gus

I’m starting to get burnt out, and you can see it through the playback of the piece. Gus turned out so cute though! Cute and severely traumatized, poor kid. I really think things will turn out better for you in season 3.

In other news, Luz might be a day late, because I am going to be busy all day tomorrow, so I will have no time to do her until late at night. I am super excited for what the finished product will be, and to continue with my other projects!

Day 3 of 6: Hunter

How do people just bust out this bad-sad boy’s hair? I spent a good five minutes on his long strand in the front alone.

In other news, Hunter may look kind of funny with half of his arm missing, but it will look better when Gus is added, I promise! I also changed my style slightly between when I last posted, but I think the more simple style is nice, more cartoon-esk.

Day 2 of 6: Amity

Have you ever really thought about the difference of season 1 and season 2 Amity is astonishing. It’s so refreshing having a bully character who isn’t flat, and their only purpose is to be a bully. Amity is so well developed, and changes so much throughout the two season, that it makes you forget who she started as; it’s good characterization.

I’m super excited for season 3, and the interactions the kids will have in the human realm. Will Lumity have a human date? Will Gus get to communicate with the  giraffes? Will Willow and Hunter get together? How will the kids react to Vee? So ready to laugh and cry (mostly cry)

Day 1 of 6: Willow!

Recently I had to buy a new pen for my tablet, and as a celebration of getting a new one, and getting back to art after a month of nothing, I’m doing a redraw of the Owl House season 2b finally.

I am so excited to see the full project, and for the new season, whenever that may be. I will definitely be doing more work with the Owl House too; stay tuned!

Hello! I am making this as a warning to a video that is going to be public tomorrow. I made the dumb mistake of not adding a warning to the beginning of the video because of themes that may be picked up from the content. The speedpaint has a person that has a rope around their neck. Am I crazy?

For the past few years the same movie ( I think) has been bobbling around in my mind. There is this dude, your stereotypical nerd that makes inventions. Nobody likes him. The movie starts with him running (I think on the side walk by his house (which is huge, but he’s like a teenager so his parents are making bank or something) or like, in his neighborhood, or something) when he locked himself on his room, and the people chasing him breaks his door down. Whelk instead of these people killing him, because you know, I was a kid when I watched this movie, the shower him in congratulations because he got into some school or something. The people congratulating him are his neighbors and classmates and teachers, because they have all been victims of his malfunctioning experiments and inventions, and they are happy to be rid of him.

Flash forward to him in this boarding school (I think it’s a high school, but I couldn’t tell you if you paid me) where his starts getting teased again despite the fact that this is some rich people school where all the students are smart for no reason. Mr. Main Character them meets the chick he is going to get with at the end of the movie ( yes it is one of those movies) and after getting ridiculed again, desired to change himself using an invention that he designs. This invention ( that is on the cover of this movie I think) is a giant heart shaped computer (I think) that will change Main Character in to the a cool guy that is basically the opposite of himself. His is fitter, cooler, actually smarter if I remember correctly, more laid back, and has a different accent then him ( I think) and goes about the movie trying to impress Love Interest while being cool him, and going on with his studies as regular him.

The conflict happens when the “cool” him starts to show up when Main Character does not want him too, or they start to switch at random. The scene I can remember the most is them at this dirt bike park place, and cool main character starts to drive on for the bikes, to impress Love Interest, when cool arms regular switch back mid jump on the bike. Nobody sees, but we get this slo-mo action shot of regular freaking out and letting go of the bike, and cool taking back over and doing some cool flip to get back on the bike and sticking the landing. ( note: I think this whole thing is flipped, but I may also be wrong, I have not seen this movie since I was like 4). So Main Character tries to get to the bottom of what happened, when it turns out that the Invention has a mind of it’s own, and is wanting to completely him permanently.

Anyway, blah blah blah, he gets turned , the power of love saves him, and they destroy the machine and they all live happily ever after. Okay, that is the movie for what I remember. Does anyone know what the hell I am talking about, or am I actually making if all of this up? Please tell me I am not crazy.

Can we make an executive decision to get rid of Momo’s butt shelf? The only purpose it has it to hold her everything book.

I wanted to design Momo a hero costume that LITERALLY IS NOY SEXUALIZED IN EVERY FANART I SEE!! Seriously, she is, like, 16. Stop it.

I would like to start my explanation by stating that I am not a professional costume designer, nor am I entitled to tell anyone how to design their characters. The only real issues I have with her costume is that she has no breast support, and her chest is open to many attacks. She has no leg support, and her heels are not the best for running and fighting. And the butt shelf, which is a whole different topic. 

I chose to ditch the one piece outfit, and changed it to a crop top that zips in the front and cargo pants (for the many pockets.) The crop top zips in both the front and back, and has a hole in both. Her sleeves are a mix of illusion sleeves and skin tight material to stick to her skin, and allow her to use her quirk on her arms. I kept the belt that she wears, but cut the thickness of it down, an removed the shelf in the back, leaving it as a regular tool belt that hangs off of her hips. Her wedge boots have also been replaced for regular work boots that would allow her to fight and run properly.

Color wise, I knew I wanted to keep her color scheme similar to her canon outfit, because I do like the color red on her. It is what she is known for, and to take that away for a different color would completely change her as a character.

I originally drew this two years ago, getting inspiration from a Barbie movie I watched for nostalgia. I wanted to do more characters, but burnout hit me hard and I didn’t continue. Maybe I can do that again 🤔

I made this when it was still a trend to make human among us characters. But, I really liked it, so I finally posted it.

This. B*tch. Took me. 2 1/2 to 3 hours. Hours. The art god looked down on me and said suffer when I got the idea to redraw an art piece from my childhood. So I spent all that time crouched around my dining room table with my dinner doing this piece because I can’t say no.

Despite my complaints, I really like how this came out. Some of the colors don’t look exactly like my original picture, but they look close enough that I felt comfortable with them. Unfortunately, the full pictures can’t be shown on Instagram, but my Tumblr will have the full version of them.

So, I am doing an OC swap with @sad.frog.hours.official on Instagram with their character Logan. I just did the three pictures of him on their account with my own special touches.
