Synopsis and Masterlist
In a world fractured by violence and ambition, there lives a girl named Kafka—gentle, strange, and too quiet for the war-torn city of Yokohama. She has no known past, no allegiance, no blood on her hands. And yet, she sees into the soul of everyone she meets.
Wandering the edges of power, she moves like a ghost between the Port Mafia’s violence, the Armed Detective Agency’s ideals, and the schemes of men who mistake empathy for weakness. She is not a soldier. She is not a savior. But she changes everything—by simply existing.
This is the story of the girl who brought peace to killers, comfort to the broken, and forgiveness to those who could never forgive themselves. It is the story of the ones she touched, the lives she altered, and the world she understood with her very soul.
A story of quiet revolution. Of unbearable empathy.
And of all the sins she could not hate.
This is actually the first story I’ve ever posted here, and AO3, which is both exciting and terrifying! I tend to write everything in one sitting and hit post without much editing—because honestly, if I let myself reread too much, I’ll fall into the perfectionist spiral and never share anything at all. So posting right after I finish is my way of breaking that habit and finally letting things go. That said, if you catch any typos, weird wording, or anything that doesn’t quite sit right, I’d really appreciate it if you let me know. Thank you so much for reading—it means more than I can say.

I feel like a lot of time shifters (especially on shiftok, don't come for me) are really closed minded. and how can you believe in shifting and still be so closed minded??
-like yes, you can script trauma in your dr and script that it doesn't affect you in your cr, it'll work just like you scripted
-you can script that your brother in one dr is your s/o in another one, you can script that you won't remember it/it won't affect you.
-you can age yourself up/down because once you shift you're gonna have the mentality of the age you've scripted (if you scripted that).
-you can race change because the morals of this reality don't apply to shifting, nothing does.
-you can script everything you want, even concepts that in this reality aren't real, you can't understand them, they're gonna be real in another one (I'll make another post about it to explain it better).
apart from that, don't listen to what anyone has to say about your dr, you don't need permission from anyone to script something you want. ora YOUR dr, YOU'RE the one who is shifting. this reality is not important, it's not special, it doesn't matter at all.
script WHATEVER you want and do WHATEVER you want.
He was as tall as he was tall, and his eyes were the color they were. To describe his hair one would say that he had some. His face had all the features you'd expect, and none of the ones you wouldn't. "There he is," people would often say of him, but only when he was there. And they were right.
sometimes my s/o makes me feel like a rabid dog
it reallyyyyyy breaks my soul whenever i see shifters on tt interacting with people clearly making fun of us like we are a punchline to them
reminder: shifting is real. you’re going to have memories from when you were a kid or random interactions with people you knew back then. even the dream you may have had when you were 10... oh and perhaps the supermarket you visited with your parents 6 years ago? your life in your dr doesn’t start from the moment you shift there. life is still life. don’t treat your dr as a ‘magical‘ place.
how to shift whenever (from an experienced shifter)
yes. you've heard this before. yes. it's recycled. i'm not giving you new information, i'm reminding you that you already know what to do and you're just not doing it. sorry lol. drink your cold brew and listen.
you shift by assuming. that's the law. no loophole. no secret ingredient. no five-step guide with a pastel graphic. just assumption. just decision.
if you've ever cried over a fictional character.....congrats. you've already shifted. you just didn't monetise it. do it on purpose next time.
it’s not "i'm so close" or "i almost did it" or "omg did i just feel something." no. it's not a quiz. it's not a scavenger hunt. it's not a 4chan riddle. it's your reality. assume it. you assume your name. you assume gravity works. you assume you have a face.
you want to shift????? ok. then do it. now. like, actually now. while reading this. literally while scrolling. yes, even if you're in the bathroom. you're already doing it, you’re just not owning it.
stop calling it a failed attempt every time you don't get the fireworks. stop naming your moments as if they’re battlefield tombstones. you’re making a museum of "almost." just go. stop narrating it.
you don't shift because you're waiting to feel shifted. you don't shift because you’re checking every three seconds like a deranged webMD dad. stop doing that. stop redownloading "hope.mp3" and acting shocked when it skips again.
you keep thinking it's hard. it's not hard. it's just annoying. annoying to keep choosing. annoying to be delusional when your brain is feral and cynical and deeply online. do it anyway.
you don't need more subliminals. you don't need to see a crow or a number or a cloud shaped like draco malfoy. you need to assume. persist. and shut up about it.
yes, it feels like lying. but most things feel like lying. flirting, job interviews, saying "i'm fine." we're already doing it. might as well get a reality out of it.
stop hoarding techniques like they're coupons for god. stop trying to feel ready. you don't get to feel ready. you just get to decide.
no one's gonna come down and tell you "you did it right." not your tumblr mutual. not the birds. not your inner child. sorry. you decide it's done and you live from that. yes, even if mittens the cat is still there. assume anyway.
it's already done. you're not waiting. you're remembering.
you're one decision away. you always have been. assume. persist. shift. log off.

Dazai was looking for new ways to annoy Chuuya when he found one abandoned in an alley. Dazai normally dislikes dogs but this little Chihuahua reminds him too much of Chuuya to let go. Chuuya never thought he would find himself jealous of a dog, but here he was, beefing with an 8 pound glorified purse rat for Dazai’s attention. Mind the tags, I regret nothing.
Not an update, but I did forget to post this before when i added new chapters.
Also the next Chapter might be delayed, I am finishing up school, just got a puppy, and moved to start a new job. Wish me luck!
shifting as a canon character is always funny to me because usually people have to dig for face claims, wardrobes, and allllll sorts of stuff. meanwhile, i can just look up his stage play actor and that's my face claim. voice claim? literally do not need one since he has a canonical one.
