Why "doing Something Relaxing” Does Not Help Your Anxiety

Why "doing something relaxing” does not help your anxiety

A lot of the time when people give advice intended to relieve anxiety, they suggest doing “relaxing” things like drawing, painting, knitting, taking a bubble bath, coloring in one of those zen coloring books, or watching glitter settle to the bottom of a jar.

This advice is always well-intentioned, and I’m not here to diss people who either give it or who benefit from it. But it has never, ever done shit for me, and this is because it goes about resolving anxiety in the completely wrong way.

THE WORST THING YOU CAN DO when suffering from anxiety is to do a “relaxing” thing that just enables your mind to dwell and obsess more on the thing that’s bothering you. You need to ESCAPE from the dwelling and the obsession in order to experience relief.

You can drive to a quiet farm, drive to the beach, drive to a park, or anywhere else, but as someone who has tried it all many, many times, trust me–it’s a waste of gas. You will just end up still sad and stressed, only with sand on your butt. You can’t physically escape your sadness. Your sadness is inside of you. To escape, you need to give your brain something to play with for a while until you can approach the issue with a healthier frame of mind.

People who have anxiety do not need more time to contemplate, because we will use it to contemplate how much we suck.

In fact, you could say that’s what anxiety is–hyper-contemplating. When we let our minds run free, they run straight into the thorn bushes. Our minds are already running, and they need to be controlled. They need to be given something to do, or they’ll destroy everything, just like an overactive husky dog ripping up all the furniture.

Therefore, I present to you:

THINGS YOU SHOULD NOT DO WHEN ANXIOUS

–Go on a walk

–Watch a sunset, watch fish in an aquarium, watch glitter, etc.

–Go anywhere where the main activity is sitting and watching

–Draw, color, do anything that occupies the hands and not the mind

–Do yoga, jog, go fishing, or anything that lets you mentally drift

–Do literally ANYTHING that gives you great amounts of mental space to obsess and dwell on things.

THINGS YOU SHOULD DO WHEN ANXIOUS:

–Do a crossword puzzle, Sudoku, or any other mind teaser game. Crosswords are the best.

–Write something. It doesn’t have to be a masterpiece. Write the Top 10 Best Restaurants in My City. Rank celebrities according to Best Smile. Write some dumb Legolas fanfiction and rip it up when you’re done. It’s not for publication, it’s a relief exercise that only you will see.

–Read something, watch TV, or watch a movie–as long as it’s engrossing. Don’t watch anything which you can run as background noise (like, off the top of my head, Say Yes to The Dress.) As weird as it seems, American Horror Story actually helps me a lot, because it sucks me in.

–Masturbate. Yes, I’m serious. Your mind has to concentrate on the mini-movie it’s running. It can’t run Sexy Titillating Things and All The Things That are Bothering Me at the same time. (…I hope. If it can, then…ignore this one.)

–Do math problems—literally, google “algebra problems worksheet” and solve them. If you haven’t done math since 7th grade this will really help you. I don’t mean with math, I mean with the anxiety.

–Play a game or a sport with someone that requires great mental concentration. Working with 5 people to get a ball over a net is a challenge which will require your brain to turn off the Sadness Channel.

–Play a video game, as long as it’s not something like candy crush or Tetris that’s mindless.

THINGS YOU SHOULD DO DURING PANIC ATTACKS ESPECIALLY:

–List the capitals of all the U.S. states

–List the capitals of all the European countries

–List all the shapes you can see. Or all the colors.

–List all the blonde celebrities you can think of.

–Pull up a random block of text and count all the As in it, or Es or whatever.

Now obviously, I am not a doctor. I am just an anxious person who has tried almost everything to help myself.  I’ve finally realized that the stuff people recommend never works because this is a disorder that thrives on free time and free mental space. When I do the stuff I listed above, I can breathe again. And I hope it helps someone here too.

(Now this shouldn’t have to be said but if the “do nots” work for you then by all means do them. They’ve just never worked for me.)

Today, in burn the stage episode 3 preview, Jungkook was shown to have oxygen mask on and there’s a scene where he has to take his shirt off so please, I beg you, do not sexualize him. Do not call that “hot” or set it as your wallpaper or something. Please refrain from posting screenshots too. It’s downright disgusting and disrespectful.

You Take The File Natasha’s Holding Out To You And Sit Next To Her, Flipping Through It With A Frown.
You Take The File Natasha’s Holding Out To You And Sit Next To Her, Flipping Through It With A Frown.
You Take The File Natasha’s Holding Out To You And Sit Next To Her, Flipping Through It With A Frown.

You take the file Natasha’s holding out to you and sit next to her, flipping through it with a frown. “Why are we going to Star City?”

“There’s a growing crime ring there that could turn into a terrorist threat,” Steve explains.

“Who’s Damien Dark?” Sam asks, flipping through his own file. “Sounds like someone out of a comic book.” You snort and look back at the file. It seems that Sam, Steve, Natasha, Wanda, and you are the only ones going on this mission. At least for now.

“He’s most likely the ring’s leader.” Natasha pulls up a picture of him on the projection monitor. “For the past couple of weeks, he’s either been impossible to track or at public gatherings.” She looks over at you. “He’s been at every single one of your boyfriend’s campaign events.”

You swallow nervously when you see Oliver’s smiling face staring up at you from the file. He still doesn’t know that you’re an Avenger, and you’d like to keep it that way for as long as you can. He’s already been through enough; he doesn’t need a superhero girlfriend and possibly an evil overlord locked on him. “Okay, so what’s the game plan?” you ask.

Steve leans forward. “We will be as undercover as we can be in Star City until someone recognizes us, which will happen eventually. We’ll be supporting Mr. Queen’s campaign. Wanda will go through Damien’s mind at each event so we know if he’s guilty and, possibly, what he’s up to.” He locks eyes with Wanda, who’s standing next to you with her arms crossed. “Is that alright?”

She nods with determination. “I can do it.”

The corner of Steve’s mouth twitches up at her words. “All right, we’ll head out in fifteen minutes so we can make Queen’s next event. ”

“Steve,” Sam says, “what about the Green Arrow?”

Natasha and Steve exchange a familiar look that makes you frown. It’s a “we-know-something-that-you-don’t” look.

“We tried to contact the vigilante so we could work with him, but got no response,” Natasha says. “We’re on our own for now.”

“Hey.” You smile, walking up to where Thea stands in the front row of Oliver’s supporters. The younger girl smiles brightly and pulls you into an enthusiastic hug.

“Hey!” she squeals and keeps her hands on your shoulders when she pulls away. “I didn’t know you were in town! Where have you been? It’s been months!”

You sigh. “My job’s kept me tied up in a bad way.” Your eyes flick to where Steve stands at the edge of the crowd, the World War II veteran hat Natasha got him pulled low over his face. His undercover get up sucks, as usual. “In fact, I’m here on business.”

Thea frowns suspiciously. “What kind of–”

She’s cut off as Oliver takes the stage in the new music hall, smiling and waving at the cheering crowd and flashing cameras. “I’ll tell you later!” you yell to Thea over the commotion. She nods and you internally sigh in relief. That will give you enough time to invent a good alibi.

“Good evening, everyone,” Oliver greets, smiling at the crowd. His eyes move over you once before they recognize you and Oliver’s smile brightens. “It’s great to see you all here.” You can’t help the smile that comes over your face at the way he’s looking at you.

“As you probably know, I am here to support the opening of this beautiful new Star City Music Hall here in the Glades. Earlier this year, it was–”

You feel a tug on your right sleeve and turn your head to see Wanda, her eyes flashing quickly from scarlet to brown. “Wanda, what’s wrong?” you whisper, taking hold of her elbow in case she gets weak. “Wanda?”

Thea leans over your shoulder and gasps. “Hey, is she okay?”

“She’s fine,” you snap and Thea recoils. You wince at your sharp tone and the fact that you responded way too quickly. “This is my colleague. She has anxiety and doesn’t do well in crowds, I’ll be right back.”

Thea nods with concerned eyes. “I’ll save your seat.” You smile gratefully and wrap your arm around Wanda’s waist, half-carrying her to the edge of the crowd and into the entrance of a hallway so you’re partially-hidden. “What’s wrong, Wanda? What is it?”

Sam walks up to you, sporting a red hat and a casual jacket and jeans. He looks at you questioningly and you shake your head. “Damien is here,” Wanda gasps, “but something … Something is wrong. It’s twisted and dark, (y/n). It’s making me dizzy.”

“Do you see anything about him? Anything important?” Sam asks.

Wanda shakes her head. “Nothing. Except …” Her eyes suddenly widen and flash scarlet as her mouth opens into a small, surprised “O.”

You squeeze Wanda’s trembling shoulder and lean her against the wall. She’s only proving to make you more worried at the moment–You’ve never seen her like this. “Wanda are you okay?”

She whips her head back and forth and continues to shake uncontrollably. You look at Sam helplessly and he gulps, taking Wanda’s other arm. “What do we do?” he asks.

Before you can even think about responding, the floor shakes with the familiar force of a nearby explosion and the sound of gunshots comes from down the hall. You gently lower Wanda to the floor as Sam runs to look at what’s going on. You follow, looking around the corner to see complete chaos.

People are fleeing in all directions, and masked men with guns are firing into the crowd. Oliver is nowhere to be seen, which immediately makes your chest clench in terror. You glance behind you to see Wanda still in the same state as before and are about to run into the crowd when you see a familiar blonde rushing toward you.

“Felicity!” You yell. Running forward, you take her arm and pull her behind cover. Sam pulls out his gun and guards the entrance as you pull the surprisingly-calm techie towards Wanda. “Please watch her, something’s wrong and I have to go.”

Felicity nods unquestioningly before glancing at Wanda and doing a double take. “Is that … ?” Then she looks at Sam’s crappy undercover outfit and even though his back is to you, she puts two and two together. “Oh my god.”

You smile shakily. “I’ll be back.”

Then you rush up to Sam’s side, pulling on your wrist braces as you do and, at his nod, the two of you run into the fray.

Sam grins, walking towards where Diggle stands on the other side of the lair. “Looks like neither of us really got out of the good fight.”

“Can’t escape it.” Dig laughs and shakes his old army buddy’s hand. He sees Steve standing beside Sam and greets him with a handshake next, nodding knowingly. “Even after a lifetime.”

Steve laughs dryly, and the three veterans look around the room. Felicity, Thea, Wanda, and Natasha are all talking around the computers as Felicity tries to track the terrorists. Wanda has a blanket around her shoulders and is still shaking slightly. She doesn’t know what happened to her at the music hall, only that Damien caused it somehow. According to her, he must have somehow known that she was in his mind.

All of the information she gathered from him was erased like a computer, and you’ve already made it clear to Steve that you’re not letting her do that again.

While the two teams have gotten along well so far, the couple at the other end of the room has been in a silent dispute for nearly two hours. They were silent on the ride to the lair, silent for the first half hour and, finally, they went to the corner to talk and haven’t stopped. Everyone else is doing their best to ignore them.

“So, what’re they usually like when they’re together?” Sam asks, looking away from you and Oliver and back at Diggle. “(y/n) talks about Oliver all the time, but …”

Dig smiles a bit. “They’re great. Oliver’s happiest whenever (y/n)’s in town. I just wish he would’ve told her about his nightly activities before now. And that she told him.”

Steve nods. “(y/n)’s very strict about keeping her identity secret. She’s never told me why.” The three are silent as they all look at the other end of the room. Steve clears his throat. “Well, since they’re a bit caught up at the moment, we should probably discuss some sort of plan.” The other two men agree, and they begin discussing a plan of attack.

On the other side of the large room, (y/n) steps away from Oliver and crosses her arms over her chest. “I just don’t understand why you didn’t tell me.”

He holds up a finger and narrows his eyes dangerously. Your heart sinks when he does so; that glare has never once been directed at you. “You have no right to say that to me. You did the same thing.”

“I was going to tell you today after your conference,” you hiss, trying your best not to subdue to his anger. “But then some psychos decided to shoot up the place, so I didn’t really get the chance.”

Oliver’s angry gaze doesn’t falter from you and you sigh, stepping forward and interlacing both of your hands with his. “Look, I love you, Oliver, and I really don’t want this to be what comes between us. We both kept secrets, and we both know everything now, so can we please just promise each other that we won’t lie anymore and move on?”

You pause and look down at your entwined hands. “I already hardly see you in the first place and I don’t want to lose you forever.”

He untangles his right hand’s fingers from your left’s and cups your chin gently so you look up at him. “No more secrets?” You shake your head. “And you’ll keep me updated?”

You nod, feeling the corner of your mouth twitch slightly. “And you’ll keep me updated?” He nods and smiles softly down at you, making you do the same. “Good.”

He grins and releases his hold on your chin and hand so he can wrap his arms lazily around your waist. “So we’re good?” he asks.

You laugh at his attempt to be coy and rest your hands on his strong chest. “Yes, Ollie, we’re ‘good.’”

Still smiling, he leans down and kisses you softly. You grip his shirt just a little tighter and kiss him back for a few seconds before pulling away. The two of you simply sway back and forth for a few seconds, foreheads touching as you do.

“I love you,” you breathe.

Oliver’s chest moves up with a small laugh and you feel his warm breath brush over your face. “I love you too.”

Bring Her Back

Hide.

That was what you were told by Tony.

Hide from the man who took Doctor Strange. Hide from anything that could hurt you.

Hide.

You watched from above. There was screaming, and blood, and soon you felt you like you were going to be pulled out of the ship. Peter had pulled Doctor Strange back into the ship, and Tony had closed the massive hole in the side.

“You’re safe now, Y/N,” Tony had yelled, looking up at you.

You closed your eyes and teleported down to the three of them, standing in front of them awkwardly.

“I know I shouldn’t have come-” You started, but Tony cut you off.

“It doesn’t matter now, kid. You’re here, and you can’t teleport all the way back to Earth without getting hurt,” he said. Then, he turned to Peter. “Can you follow me really quick?”

The two of them walked off, leaving you and Doctor Strange alone. “So, Mr. Strange-”

“That stunt you pulled to get on this ship was pretty cool, kid. Dangerous, but cool.”

“Uh, thanks,” you mumbled, smiling lightly.

You continued to talk Doctor Strange about what was happening. Unbeknownst to you, Peter was looking in your direction, ignoring Tony completely.

“Kid, are you even listening?” Tony said, snapping a finger in front of Peter’s face.

“What? Oh, sorry,” he mumbled, turning back to Tony.

“Did you hear anything I said?”

“Um, no,” Peter said and looked at the floor.

Tony sighed in frustration. “Okay, listen. She’s not supposed to be here.” Tony pointed towards you. “I need you to promise me you’ll protect her with your life. Got it?”

Peter nodded. “I promise.”

The two of them started towards you. You looked up at them and smiled lightly. “Listen, Peter, I know you told me not to come along, but I didn’t want to see my best friend get hurt, so I followed you around the city, and-”

Peter walked up to you and put a hand on your shoulder. “It’s okay, Y/N.”

Peter looked over at Tony, who nodded and walked off with Doctor Strange.

The two of you stood in silence, the soft whirring of the ship being the only sound.

“I really am sorry Peter. I just I didn’t want to wake up one day and know my best friend was gone, and there was nothing I could do about it. I wanted to-I wanted to keep you safe,” you mumbled, looking at the floor. “I don’t know if I could live without you.” You felt tears well up in your eyes and felt them slowly roll down your cheek.

Peter put his arms out, and you leaned into him, letting him pull you into a hug. Your head rested on his chest, and he ran a hand through your hair. “It’s okay, Y/N. I won’t get hurt. I won’t let either of us get hurt.”

You looked up at him. “Promise?”

“Promise.”

Tony came rushing over to you two, and you pulled away from the hug. “We need to land this ship. Hurry up and get over here.”

The three of you ran to the ship’s controls. Doctor Strange was standing there, looking through the glass of the ship. It was hurdling towards a planet, which you later learned was Titan, and you were, no doubt, going to crash.

“Put your arm in that thing right there,” Tony told Peter, pointing at a machine next to him.

Peter turned around and looked at the machine questioningly before sticking his arm in it. “Now what?”

“I don’t know! We have to control it somehow,” Tony said, inspecting the machine.

“Well you better figure it out soon,” Strange said. Everyone turned their heads towards the glass, watching as the planet got closer by the second.

“We’re not gonna make it without crashing!” You exclaimed, pacing back and forth.

“Kid, calm down. We’ll figure it out.”

“Tony,” Peter mumbled, looking at him.

“Tony, we’re gonna crash!” You yelled.

“Just give me a minute!”

“Tony,” Peter said again, concern lacing his voice.

“Not now, kid.”

“Tony-”

The ship hit the planet at full force, throwing all of you backward. You let out a shriek as your body flew towards the back of the ship. You landed on the floor head first, the cold metal making a clink sound. You could feel yourself start to lose consciousness, your vision going dark.

“Shit! Y/N, hey! Y/N, don’t close your eyes on me. I’m gonna get you out of here,” someone said. You could make out Peter’s figure through your blurry vision.

You felt his arm wrap around your torso, pulling you up. “Peter…”

“No, don’t talk. You’re okay, I’ve got you.” Peter took both your arms and made you loop them around his neck. “Just hold on, okay?”

You nodded, feeling dizzy.

Both your feet were off the ground, and you were swinging through the air. Peter tightened his grip on you as he swung through the wreckage of the ship.

When you were both safely on the ground, Peter set you down gently. “Just stay awake for me, Y/N.”

“I’m so dizzy,” you mumbled, closing your eyes. “So, so dizzy.”

“Mr. Stark!” Peter called. Tony was over in a matter of seconds, Strange following behind him. “She’s about to pass out.”

“Move,” Strange said, pushing the boy out of the way.

Peter watched anxiously as Strange put a hand over your head and a faint glow of orange appearing.

You sat up, a gasp leaving your lips. “What- what happened?” You asked, looking around in confusion. “Where are we?”

“We’re on Titan,” Tony said, walking towards you. “The ship crashed. You hit your head pretty hard.”

“Oh.” You looked around, eyes traveling over the planet’s surface. They landed on Peter, and you looked up at him. His face was laced with concern, his dark brown eyes staring into your E/C ones.

A gunshot snapped you out of your daze. You frantically stood up, running behind Tony and Peter. “Teleport you and Peter out of here. Now.”

You took Peter’s hand in yours and closed your eyes. Just when you felt a spark, pain shot through you. Your body collapsed from underneath you. Peter caught you, holding you upright.

“What’s wrong?” He asked.

“I-I can’t. It hurts,” you whispered, pushing yourself up. “I’m sorry.”

“It’s okay.”

You both turned to Tony and Strange, who were standing in battle stances. “Kid, why the hell are you-”

Someone had thrown themselves onto Tony, knocking him down.

“Tony!” You screamed, rushing to him. You felt a hand wrap around your wrist, holding you back. You turned around and saw an almost gray man. You screamed. “Get off me!”

Someone flew forward and kicked the man in the side of the head, sending him stumbling backward. He let go of you in the process, so you sprinted to Tony, who was pinned down by a strange man with a mask.

You ran up to them and brought up your foot, slamming your heel into the strange man’s ribs. He fell off Tony, and Tony stood up, raising his blaster. You got behind him, looking over his shoulder for Peter or Strange.

You saw some girl with pale skin and dark eyes in front of Strange, her hands resting on the side of his head. Looking into his eyes, you noticed a pasty white color and realized his pupil’s and iris’s were gone.

You then saw Peter being held by the same man that had you earlier.

You looked around and noticed that the man with the mask had vanished. Tony had also left, and was cautiously walking towards Peter.

A hand wrapped around your stomach. You opened your mouth to scream, but another hand flew up to cover it. “Move or make a sound and you’re dead,” someone whispered in your ear.

Your eyes met Peter’s. He looked at you, fear evident in his gaze.

“Drax, Mantis, let them go,” the man said. Peter and Strange both fell to the ground. The gray man and pale woman backed up towards you and the man, standing at his side.

Tony, Strange and Peter all stood in front of you. Tony held his blaster at the man’s head.

“Anyone moves and I’ll blast her brains out.” You felt something cold touch the side of your head.

A gun. Wonderful, you thought.

“I’m gonna ask you this one time, where is Gamora?” The man asked, anger laced in his tone.

“Yeah, I’ll do you one better,” Tony paused. “Who is Gamora?

The gray man, who you learned was called Drax, stepped forward. “I’ll do you one better, why is Gamora?”

Everyone looked at him in confusion before the man holding you spoke. “Wait, so you guys aren’t with Thanos?”

“With Thanos? Are you insane?” Strange asked from behind Tony.

The man let go of you and you fell to the ground. Peter ran forward and caught you last-second. “You good?”

You nodded.

“Dammit,” the man took off his mask, throwing it down.

“Who’s-who’s Gamora?” You stuttered.

“No one. It doesn’t matter.”

You shrugged it off, sitting down and falling back. Peter sat next to you, crossing his legs. “What are we gonna do if Thanos comes?” He asked, looking at Tony.

“I don’t know, kid. We need some sort of plan.” At the mention of a plan, the three strangers looked up.

“I have an idea, but I don’t know how it’ll work,” the once masked-man said.

“We’re listening.”

You and Peter hid behind part of the broken ship. He paced back and forth, mumbling “we can do this” over and over. You walked up to him and grabbed his hand, making him face you.

“Peter, calm down,” you said, looking up at him. “It’ll be okay.”

“S-sorry,” he mumbled in response.

You ran your thumb across his knuckles, smiling up at him.

“Y/N, if we don’t make it out of this alive, I-I want you to know, I lo-”

Your intercoms went off. “Get ready.”

You looked at him one last time before dropping his hand. You walked to the edge of the broken ship, peering over.

A swirl of blue and black formed, and Thanos stepped out. Strange stood in front of him, ready to fight. “Now.”

Peter shot a web and swung forward, shooting webs at Thanos’s face.

Drax flew behind him, slashing at his legs.

Strange shot a portal in front of Thanos, which other Peter came out of. He put a bomb on Thanos’s back before flipping him off and falling through another portal.

Peter went in and out of portal’s, kicking and punching Thanos in the process. He went to swing at him again, but Thanos grabbed him by the throat and pushed him into the ground.

You let out a scream, and a strangled sob let your throat. Closing your eyes, cold rushed through your body as you teleported down to them. Thanos threw Peter at Strange, and both of them fell to the ground.

You ran over to them, making sure they were okay. “Fuck, what the hell happened?” You asked, pulling Strange up.

“Nothing. We’re fine,” Peter said, turning to you. “Are you okay?”

“I haven’t even done anything yet,” you replied.

“Well, you better do something.” Strange flew off, firing something from his hand.

You closed your eyes and landed on Thanos, pulling out a dagger. You were about to stab his neck, but he pulled you off him and flipped you over. “Nice try.”

You felt yourself fly forward, and you were unable to stop.

Someone flew by you, grabbing your upper arm.

You landed on the ground, stumbling backward. Someone had fallen on top of you, their hands awkwardly holding your waist.

“Shit,” you heard Peter mumble.

“Peter, get off me,” you said, pushing him up.

He fell back, looking at you, surprised.

“You get them.” You pointed to other Peter, Mantis, and Drax. “And I’ll get them,” you said, pointing to Strange and Tony.

He nodded before shooting a web and flying off.

Cold went through your body, and you were hiding behind pieces of debris and rubble.

Thanos had stabbed Tony in the chest, and he crumbled to the floor.

Your hands flew to your mouth as a gasp left you lips.

Strange sat nearby, staring at Tony. “Let-let him go. Save him, and I’ll give you the stone.”

Your eyes widen in shock. What the hell is he thinking?

The wound in Tony’s chest started to close.

Strange took the stone from his locket.

You couldn’t believe they were giving up.

The stone floated towards Thanos. You watched from behind a broken part of the ship as it got closer to him.

You wouldn’t let him get it.

You couldn’t let him get it.

You pushed off the ground, sprinting towards the stone. Only one thing ran through your mind.

He can’t get the stone.

You jumped over his arm, grasping the small stone in your hand. Your eyes fell shut as cold went through you.

But you were two seconds too late.

Thanos wrapped a hand around your throat, lifting you into the air.

The stone fell from your hands, the faint glow of green leaving your sightline.

“You stupid girl.”

You couldn’t breathe. Every breath you took was shorter than the last until you felt yourself slipping from consciousness.

Strange and Tony got up, but Thanos pushed them aside like nothing. “You stupid, stupid girl.”

A sharp pain shot through your stomach as he let you go. You fell to the ground, gasping for air. Spots started to dance in your vision.

A knife was planted in your stomach, and blood rushed from the wound like an ocean current.

Just like that, he was gone. Thanos was gone, and he had the stone.

“Y/N!” Strange exclaimed, rushing up to you. “Oh, god.”

Tony and Strange hovered over you, tears in their eyes. “Don’t die on us, kid. You can’t die on us.”

You looked up at them, tears blurring your vision. “I can’t-I can’t do it,” you said, gasping for breath. You could feel yourself fading, slipping into darkness.

“Y/N-”

“Tell-” You let out a choked sob as pain shot through your body. “Tell Peter I-I’m sorry,” you paused. “Tell him I’m sorry, and that I l-love him.”

You felt yourself go cold as darkness took you over.

You felt yourself fade into nothing.

Peter landed swiftly near part of the broken ship. He shot webs back and forth, swinging until Tony came into his line of sight.

He swung over, falling down in front of him. “Tony!”

When Tony looked up, he knew something was wrong.

Peter shrugged it off, looking over Tony’s shoulder for you.

He noticed Strange walking towads them, carrying something in his arms. As strange got closer, he realized it was a body.

Your body.

Peter rushed forward, pushing off the ground at full force.

He took your body from Strange and fell to the ground, holding you in his arms. “No. No no no no no no-” His hand flew to his mouth as a sob left his lips. “No!”

Strange and Tony stood behind him, tears welling in their eyes.

“She can’t be dead! She can’t be!” Peter cried, tears streaming down his face. “She can’t be dead!”

“Peter-”

“No! I promised her. I promised her!” He yelled, his voice so loud it echoed off every rock. He stood up, marching up to Strange. “You have the time stone, right? Go back! Get her back!” He grabbed the collar of Strange’s suit, pushing him back. “Bring her back!”

Tony had to practically yank Peter off Strange. “Kid-”

“Bring her back!” He cried.

“Kid-”

“You need to bring her back!”

“Peter, he can’t!” Tony screamed, forcing Peter to face him. “Thanos has the stone.”

Peter whipped around, a fire in his eyes. “What?”

“We can’t-we can’t get her back, Peter. She’s gone.”

“No-”

“I’m so sorry.”

Peter ran up to you, falling in front of your frozen body. He looked at the girl who was his best friend, the girl he loved.

He looked at the girl he lost.

The tears wouldn’t stop.

He looked at your face, staring into your once bright E/C eyes. He would never get to see those eyes shine again.

“I’m so sorry, Y/N,” he cried, his voice cracking. “I’m so, so sorry.”

He craddled your lifeless body in his arms. He held your head to his chest, repeatedly running his hand through your hair, mumbling “I’m sorry” and “I love you” over and over.

He kissed the top of your head, burying his face in your hair.

A deep shade of crimson covered his suit, but he couldn’t care less.

He sobbed for hours, clutching your body to his. He swore that he wouldn’t let you go. He cried in grief and agony and pain. He cried and cried, and he wasn’t going to stop.

Peter knew he had lost you, and he knew he wasn’t getting you back.

part one // part two

Not much time went by after that where you wanted nothing else than to be back home. You thought about it every single minute. Seeing your father and Peter only made you homesick.

You assumed this day would be no different than the last as you sat in your corner. Your head pounded every minute you were awake now. It was just a constant, dull thumping in the back of your skull.

You had just kicked the tray of breakfast aside gently when the room was forced into darkness. Emergency lights flickered on above your heads as you pushed yourself to your knees.

A burst of cheering came from Clint, followed by some from Sam as the containment doors slid open. You could see a silhouette cross the room towards Wanda, helping pull the straitjacket from her frame.

“Y/N,” Clint whispered as he made his way towards you. “Come here.”

You pushed yourself on shaky feet and moved towards Clint. He walked behind you to release your arms, letting you shake the blood back into them. As soon as the jacket clattered to the floor, you let out a sigh of relief. The collar came next as he used the remote to disconnect it.

“You okay?” Clint placed his hands on your shoulders, keeping your swaying form still. You forced a nod, letting him lead you out towards the rest of your team.

“Mini.” You looked up, absolutely shocked to see Steve standing in front of you. You didn’t hesitate to throw yourself in his arms, squeezing him tightly. He returned the gesture but didn’t let your feet return to the ground. “We’ve gotta run. I already have all your stuff in the quinjet but we need to move. And fast.”

With that, the team took off back through the door. You stayed tense in Steve’s arms, terrified that you were going to be busted for trying to escape. As soon as the jet came into view, you let out a content sigh, relaxing in his grip.

“Mini.” He set you down on one of the medical beds in the back. “I’ll be right back. Stay here.”

You offered him a nod as you sank down into the comfy fabric, fighting to stay conscious. The toll of not eating plus lack of sleep was kicking in and you knew you were going to crash here soon.

You had just started to fall asleep when a comforting hand rested on your arm. You opened your eyes to see Wanda sitting next to you, Steve hovering over her shoulder.

“Hey,” You mumbled, moving to sit up.

Wanda shook her head, pressing down on your arm to keep you in place. “Stay here, kiddo. We’re going to monitor your vitals on the way home.”

“Y/N, you want to tell me what happened back there?” Steve asked, leaning against the wall as he looked down at you.

You shrugged, curling up under the blanket. “I don’t…I just gave up, you know? I don’t think my dad would forgive me or-or Peter and I just…” You paused as tears filled your eyes again. “I can’t forgive myself for what I did. I wanted to help you, Steve, I did but I didn’t see what I was losing by doing that.”

Steve nodded, crouching down next to you. “You know your dad would never give up on you. After everything that we’ve put him through, he’s still there for us. You’re his kid, Y/N. He loves you more than anything. And you helped us succeed. I’m sorry it was at the cost it was but we did it, kid.”

You nodded, clutching the pillow as if it was your lifeline. Steve gave you a sad smile, brushing some hair out of your eyes before leaving you alone with Wanda.

“Are you guys coming home?” You asked, grabbing Wanda’s hand. She gave you a sad smile, answering your question. You sighed, “Promise you’ll at least call me every now and then? And let me know how you’re doing?”

Wanda nodded. “Of course. I pinky promise.” She linked her pinky with yours, giving you a reassuring smile. “Get some sleep. I’ll wake you up when we land.”

You let go of her pinky to curl under the blankets completely, finally feeling safe enough to sleep. As soon as your eyes closed, your body accepted slumber easily and the world faded around you.

Masterlist- Lost but Not Forgotten

Featuring: Robert Downey Jr. x Teen!Daughter!Reader and Avengers cast x Teen!Reader later on.

You were adopted on your sixth birthday by your loving parents, Emilia and Jason. You’re finishing up junior year of high school with flying colors, you have a great friend and an even better family. Simple story, right?

Wrong.

You have these dreams, weird dreams with a man that looks eerily like you. You brush it off as nothing, just old memories of your biological family.

Then you’re assigned a research paper on anything that you want. You choose to research a cold case. Physical similarities are there: a malformed ear, birthmarks, and a striking resemblance to an aged-up composite sketch, as well an unclear information about your adoption make you uneasy. Uneasy enough to take action.

After that, your world comes crashing down.

You weren’t adopted. You were kidnapped.
