Wake and obey

Saw a post recently where someone was lamenting how boring their professors were, and all they wanted to do instead was get lost in spirals, coaxing words, and blissful mindlessness. Poor thing.

But this got me thinking.

College professor who leads a lecture, any subject, who knows the power of his words. But he doesn’t use this power for evil; rather, he uses carefully constructed language, repetition, even snaps, for some reason (seriously, why does this guy keep snapping during lecture? Is he afraid we’ll fall asleep?) to make sure the information sticks. Sometimes he’ll have the class repeat things out loud, even several times in a row (again with the damn snapping…), and use the same phrases in subsequent lectures. It is a bit odd that sometimes students will soundlessly repeat the phrases whenever they come up, several of them moving their mouths in unison to the rehearsed words, but he doesn’t seem to notice (and if he does, he doesn’t seem to mind).

It’s weird as hell, but you’ve got to hand it to him – it works. Even students who struggle in other classes or have never been “good at school” find themselves motivated to study, to attend lecture, to do well in his class. He has great reviews, students love attending office hours (though sometimes they do leave wondering just where the last hour went…), and most importantly, students do end up doing well – and the material seems to be ingrained in them for quite some time after the course has ended.

You wonder what makes him such an effective teacher, and after you get your degree, you find him on social media and reach out. He thanks you for your kind words, and offers to have “office hours” at his place this weekend, since he’s swamped during the week. You happily oblige – you’ve been wanting to hear him speak again, and agree to be there this weekend.

You show up, just a bit early, dressed to impress, though you’re not quite sure why – he was just a professor for one class, after all. He greets you at the door, same warm smile that you remember, that cadence just as inviting as it was in every lecture you attended. As you catch up over coffee, you ask your questions, and listen with rapt attention as he divulges the secrets of his teaching success. But as he goes on, you notice that it becomes harder to concentrate. Harder to focus. It’s easy to listen, but you can hardly keep your eyes open, can hardly keep a coherent thought, can hardly…

The next thing you’re aware of is the closing of his front door, getting into your car, and driving home – a drive you hardly remember. It isn’t until you’re thinking about the day’s events later that evening when you realize you don’t remember a word he said, which you usually do. In fact, you hardly remember anything about your visit. And, though slightly unrelated, you could’ve sworn you had put underwear on this morning, you’re sure of it…

You sigh, a bit mad at yourself for not being able to remember the answers that you were so excited to finally hear from him. You consider reaching out again, asking if you could come back next weekend to hear more – you could put it under the guise of what he said really stuck in your mind, and you wanted to hear more, really get his thoughts.

You know what, yeah… That does sound like a good idea.
