I made these as a way to compile all the geographical vocabulary that I thought was useful and interesting for writers. Some descriptors share categories, and some are simplified, but for the most part everything is in its proper place. Not all the words are as useable as others, and some might take tricky wording to pull off, but I hope these prove useful to all you writers out there!

hey i was hoping for some advice on how to stop planning fics and actually START?? like i feel like i have to plan out every chapter and then just feel paralysis at actually starting at the fear of the fic derailing into something else (which is part of the beauty ik) any advice helps :’(

HELLO NONNY! First of all, totally flattered you'd want to come here for advice. Second, gosh, yes, this is one of the most difficult parts of fic writing. Happy to try to help out, though this might get long!

So I see that you're primarily concerned with multi-chaptered/longfics here! It's been a minute since I've hunkered down to work on one of those myself--but this is a good warm-up question for me, as I've got a couple current ideas (including original work) that would necessitate more long-term planning.

When you're writing and publishing a longfic, you pretty much have three options, each with a varying degree of rigidity.

Plan your entire fic (however you like--outline, flow chart, etc.!) and finish writing it in its entirety before posting on a schedule per chapter. Benefits here include the ability to let your plot/characters grow organically without being bound to something you've already posted. No worries about a plot "derailing" if you're able to course-correct something earlier in the midst of it! Also, you're able to write in genuinely any order in this case. Downside, though, is that motivation can be a struggle here.

Plan your entire fic roughly and start writing at the beginning. Give yourself a few chapters of leeway (maybe 3-4 ahead of posting??) and post on a schedule while working on future chapters. You'll still be able to account for organic growth, here, but you are more bound by items that have already been posted. A good plus, though, is the motivation you might get from readers along the way.

Plan your entire fic, start writing at the beginning, and post chapters as they're finished without leeway. GREAT for feedback, but it's super easy to get yourself stuck as new ideas develop.

For an original work with the goal of publication, obviously, I'd use option one. For fic writing and posting on AO3, though, I'd make it my goal to pursue option 2. It's a really nice balance of keeping yourself and your plot on track but also picking up some sweet serotonin along the way.

Regardless of your posting method, it also seems like you'd benefit from hearing how I plan longfics in general. Using a typical indentation format, I start with the bare-bones structure of the plot to help determine chapter breaks (which can change as the actual writing occurs) and overall actions. Once I have the main ideas spelled out, I'll go back and fill out each section into as much detail I have in mind at the time. This will definitely vary chapter section by chapter section. Some ideas will already be specifically developed! Others might stay bareboned.

From there, I head to the opening chapter, as I personally write in order (you might not!). I'll fill in the chapter section with as much detail as possible (scenes, dialogue, in-depth prose notes, etc.) to make actually writing out the chapter as easy as possible for me. Using an excerpt from one of my longfic outlines, here's how a ready-to-be-written chapter section might look:

Once I have that level of detail done, I'll write the chapter. It really helps because while the planning was still "planning," it becomes a lot easier to translate the Plan into actual prose. After the chapter drafted and then finished, I'll move on to the next section and flesh it out exactly the same way before writing. Rinse and repeat!

That way, I have my overarching framework all good to go, but the little living details are the ones that can change as the work itself is completed! I think it's a happy medium between rigidity and natural flow, in which neither really impedes the other.

Bottom line, though? Best way to start writing is to just start. Easier said than done, and something that's really hard for my brain to accept as well. It's a universal struggle. But when you find the tools that work for You, it's fantastic!

God this got so much longer than I intended. Apologies and thanks if you sat through all of this without your eyes glazing over. As for me, I'm off to keep agonizing over planning and actually starting various one-shots, lmao.

More details I found looking at his page: He works as a cnc designer professionally for biomedical and aerospace industries and he designed and manufactured this himself. None of the eyes he’s made (he’s made MANY!) are 3D printed, they’re machined, medical grade titanium so they don’t get hot from the LED and are safe to use as a prosthetic. He wants to make them for other people at some point, but says he has a lot of research and development to do before that can happen.

saw a post abt HBO removing shows that suggests ppl just “burn dvds” but everyone doesnt know how to do that so here is one way to do that

- get blank dvds (Both +R or -R work, I think +R is slightly cheaper, the difference is rewritability), these are not very expensive for the amount you can get in bulk (if you are in the US 100 of them is about 30$ at walmart)

- an external DVD drive that plugs in via usb is also around 20-40$ (it tends to be closer to 20)

- download DVDFlick (free)

- if you don’t already have the mp4/mpeg of whatever media you want to burn, you can download movies/shows off of sites like gomovies.sx and soap2day

gomovies.sx will have a download button that looks like this

below the video you can choose one of these

if you click streamlare for example and then the download button it will take you here where the mp4 is

(if you’re on an iphone/ipad, clicking download will save it to your files app)

- if you cant find the download button on soap2day you can also install a video downloader extension which will find the movie for you

- at this point you can drag and drop it into a google drive or keep it on your computer but if you still want it on dvd ->

- open dvd flick, drag and drop the video

- click “project settings”

- give it whatever title you want, you can change encoder to “normal” (default is below normal if you are doing other things on the computer). you dont need to change target size or thread count (unless you want to)

- insert a blank dvd into your drive, make sure you click “burn project to disc”

- click accept then click “create dvd” next to menu and project settings. it will create a destination folder and this dialogue box will pop up when you click “create” on more dvds, just click “yes” and then “okay” on the box that appears after it

it’ll take a couple hours, once its done take a sharpie & write whats on it and stick it in a case . or dont . im not ur mom

If the HBO Max shitshow teaches us anything at all, it should be that when it comes to streaming media, media piracy is media preservation.

Physical media is harder to erase. Download your favorite animated shows today. Burn that shit to DVD and share it with your friends. If the corporations won't produce physical media, it's up to us to do it ourselves.

Streaming exclusives are the enemy of media preservation and archiving. Nothing should be lost just because corporations don't respect the art they own. When piracy is the only option, it becomes vital to pirate, lest things get lost forever.

There are instances of lost media being found again because someone home-taped it. The torrent you seed, the episodes you download, could one day be the only reason your favorite streaming show wasn't lost forever.

Art is being destroyed. Workers are being exploited and abused. And at the end of it all, what's there to show for it? Nothing, because HBO Max is setting the precedent that you can just delete whatever you want, whenever you want, and not even tell the artists.

Animation workers aren't being respected as artists OR as workers, and shit like this is a perfect example.

A small snippet based on my text post. To sum things up about it, basically someone started a running joke about Aloy and Beta being oblivious hermits, and they decide to enact their revenge like any true siblings would.

“Hey Aloy? Can I ask you something?” 

The huntress in question looked up at her sister, and hummed in response. While it wasn’t unusual at all for Beta to ask her questions, something about this time just seemed… different. 

Perhaps it was the tone of her voice, the set of her shoulders, or something in the air. 

Or maybe it was the shine in her eyes speaking of untold pain and mischief for someone deserving. 

“Where do babies come from?”

All hustle in the common room froze. No one moved nor made a sound, beyond Erend’s wheezing as he choked on his ale. 

It was like a spark between them. A moment of connection. The stars had aligned, their crops were watered, their pores were cleared, and for once, Aloy and Beta were on exactly the same wavelength. 

Revenge.

“Well Beta,” Aloy answered slowly, hastily covering the sadistic gleam in her eyes matching Beta’s own as everyone else sighed in relief over the fact that clearly, Aloy had it handled now.

Oh, those sweet summer children. Those poor unfortunate souls. Those novices tripping over their hunting spears. Like she would ever give up such a golden opportunity. 

Aloy employed every bit of training Rost ever gave her, every moment she pretended she was Rost, every last bit of experience she had gained in her twenty-something years to keep her composure. “I don’t actually know.” And all at once, the tension skyrocketed. Alva squeaked and dropped her glass, spilling water everywhere. Kotallo stared off into the middle distance, like he was chiseled out of stone. Zo twitched, her hands spasming erratically over her stomach. Erend let out a strangled whine, thumping his chest to get his breath back in him. Aloy locked eyes with Beta, each of them acknowledging that this, this moment right here, was truly the start of a greater connection. A greater whole. A true sisterhood. It started right here, getting sweet, sweet revenge on everyone on base. She turned to the others, Beta copying her movement. 

“But I’m sure someone else knows. Why don’t we ask them?”

The sisters watched in concealed pleasure as everyone else turned green. Yes, life was good.

HFW: Miscellaneous Beta HCs

Thinking about my favorite clone siblings (sorry Delta Squad, you've been replaced), specifically lil baby Beta, decided to write down some HCs. Contains some spoilers for HFW, mostly implied. Also the first few are all about food because for some reason that's where my brain went first lmao

Growing up on a spaceship, with limited dietary options (all of which were printed as opposed to cooked by humans, per old world standards), Beta was understandably hesitant to eat pretty much anything once she arrived at the Base. It took her weeks to adjust to the difference in both texture and taste. Once she did, however, she knew that she never wanted to go back to eating like the Zeniths did.

Her eating habits still aren’t great, though. Often forgoes actual meals in favor of frequent snacking. Thanks to the Focus being holographic and relying on gestures, she usually doesn’t have to worry about messy hands* getting her workspace dirty while she eats. Cleans up immediately after she’s done munching, every time, without fail.

*To be clear: Beta does not enjoy messy foods unless she can eat with utensils. Even then, her snackies can still leave minor residue on her hands, and she prefers to not get said residue on anything important (or not important, for that matter).

Partially due to her snacking habits, Beta ends up learning what everyone at the Base prepares for trail rations. When she first arrives at Base, she has zero idea how to cook, and relies on the others for help. But as she grows closer to everyone, she tries to get better at cooking. Eventually she frequently helps the gang prepare their various rations, half to be helpful, half so she can squirrel some away in her room.

Has a bit of a sweet tooth, and probably most enjoys Kotallo's and Zo's rations, both of which contain a fair amount of fruit.

Even after the end of the game, when most of the A-Team/Gaia Gang leaves to establish/confirm alliances, Beta stays in frequent contact with her new friends. Sometimes they’ll have a long distance “tv night”, where they all watch an episode of Second Time Around and talk about it afterwards. Sometimes they have to take a break halfway through so Beta can spend half an hour providing vital context (sometimes the others pretend not to understand if it seems like she’s enjoying rambling about a certain subject).

Zo introduced Beta to tea relatively soon after she arrived at the Base. Admittedly Beta wasn’t exactly fond of the actual taste (at least not the first several blends she tried). But she enjoyed the feeling of a warm mug in her hands, and grew to enjoy the company that Zo provided. Eventually she was able to find a couple kinds of tea she enjoys more (sweeter ones, mostly, but also one with hints of spiciness).

Beta honestly would have been VERY interested in paintings/sculptures if Tilda hadn’t created such a painful association with them/if she had been given a chance to learn/explore of her own volition. As it is, she’s still interested in art, but heavily prefers photography and cinematography. Even with access to Zenith’s copy of Apollo, she doesn’t have a whole bunch of the latter to look at, unfortunately. She ends up experimenting with using her Focus to record things, especially the cool places Aloy brings her to (Hidden Ember is probably her favorite, even if she sometimes has to wear ear plugs to avoid overstimulation).

On that note, Beta struggles a lot of sensory input issues, both with over and understimulation. Growing up on a spaceship meant being surrounded by a near constant hum, which is why she gravitated towards the server room at the Base. Eventually she works with a few of Aloy’s tinkerer friends to make a special headset (goggles + earbuds) to help filter out bright lights and loud sounds, perfect for visiting busy settlements.

Additionally, she can be a tad picky when it comes to clothing, preferring softer/smoother fabrics and loose designs, hating the feeling of tight clothes. In the end, most of her outfits are an odd blend of Carja and Nora clothes. Aloy gets her a special (custom ordered, featuring Nora aesthetic with Carja fabric) outfit to celebrate the 1 year anniversary of her escaping Far Zenith<3

Gaia Gang Running Jokes

I made a joke about Beta liking Old World memes the other day, and that got me thinking about the Gaia Gang/A-Team and what running/inside jokes they might have. Not sure if these are any good?

*pointing at a poisonous plant* "Hey Zo, can I eat this?"

Whenever Aloy isn't around, everyone else brainstorms ideas for new titles/nicknames they can call her. The important part is that they never directly reveal the fact that they made them up, leaving Aloy to wonder if she's going to get bombarded with new nicknames next time she stops by a settlement. (On at least one occasion, Kotallo went out of his way to include Hekkaro in on the joke, much to Aloy's utter bafflement)

*holding up random Old World trinkets* "You see, this here is a Gigglegripper 3000, which the Old Ones used to trim nose hairs-" "Actually that's the JumbleHopper 4000, a tool for determining whether or not it's raining." "You're thinking of the WetWorks WhipperSnapper Dry XL LUXE edition, this is-" and so forth. Becomes way more prominent if Sylens or Tilda are around.

Constant half-joking debates about whether Aloy is Sobeck's daughter or Gaia's daughter, and if Gaia is technically Sobeck's daughter. Usually gets complicated further by someone asking if Current Gaia counts as the same person as Gaia Prime, and then someone suggesting that Current Gaia is actually Aloy's daughter (because Aloy did restore her, after all). Although things could be even further complicated (to a humorous degree) by the idea that Aloy is Sobeck (renewed/extended/reborn/reincarnated, whatever you want to call it), everyone knows that Aloy wouldn't be comfortable with the notion, so they exclude that from their joking.

"So Aloy is Sobeck's daughter, and Gaia Prime is Sobeck's daughter, but Current Gaia is Aloy's daughter?" "No no no, Aloy is Gaia Prime's daughter, Gaia Prime is Sobeck's daughter, so Aloy is Sobeck's granddaughter. Current Gaia both is and is not the same as Gaia Prime, and is Aloy's daughter. Therefore, Aloy's daughter is also her mother, and her sister is genetically her grandmother :)" (cue Aloy looking incredibly exasperated in the background)

*Aloy is about to leave the base* "Hey, wait, you almost forgot the most important tool of all!" *hands her a fucking rock*

Jokingly blaming Ted Faro for literally anything going wrong. Accidentally spilled your food? Ugh, way to go, Ted. The machine you killed doesn't have that part you needed? *sarcastic* Thanks, Ted! It takes a while for Alva to adjust, but after she joins the team it becomes one of her favorite jokes, though she also suggests occasionally swapping out "Ted" with "Ceo".

Sometimes folks will use "we/ours/us" in cases where "I/my/me" would be more appropriate, mainly in an attempt to remind Aloy that she's not alone. However, over time it evolved and now she uses it to her advantage. "Aloy... we need to talk about your hoarding problem. There are literally over a thousand medicinal berries in your stash!" "Don't you mean our hoarding problem?"

*handing something very light to Kotallo or Erend* "can you hold this" or "this is heavy, please carry it for me" or one of those followed by several seconds of silence prior to the realization that the prankster has, in fact, initialized hand holding

At one point Alva makes an offhand comment about the Old World concept of an "Evil Clone" (specifying that it was a common trope in Old World media), and there's a brief, uncomfortable moment before everyone immediately agrees that neither Aloy nor Beta are anything close to an evil clone. Eventually it becomes a running joke to point at masked/concealed enemies (and sometimes ones whose faces are clearly visible) and ask if they're an evil clone of Aloy
