Not reblogging because I don't want to bash, but a day after hearing that OpenAI has scraped AO3 to train their writing AI, I've just seen a Tumblr post with AI-generated 'fanfic'.
The billions of hours of labour that millions of fanfic writers have given, hoping for nothing in return but comments and kudos, has been taken and used to train a for profit AI owned by Elon Musk.
This is bad, guys.
It's bad because it's fundamentally wrong, because it endangers fan works, and because it's illegal.
Not illegal in the way that fanfiction is legally questionable but now broadly defensible by highly trained OTW lawyers. Illegal in the way that copyrighted works and characters have been used for profit to create works with Open AI.
It's wrong not just because the works are created without consent from the labour of authors who won't see a penny, but because the aim of AIs like Open AI is to replace the work of professional writers.
You may use Open AI to make a silly fanfic and have a good laugh, but that's not what Elon wants it for.
If you hate what's happened to Twitter, you should be really, really scared about this.
It endangers fanworks because it awakens the power and might of brands like Disney, who have mostly stopped trying to sue fancreators (although they really, really did used to, and not that long ago) for using their IP and especially for writing LGBTQ+ fic. They're mostly willing to turn a blind eye because we aren't making any money.
But that's not what Elon wants to do. And they might start caring again if they see Open AI writing Stucky (follow the link, it writes Stucky omegaverse fic at the merest mention of Steve) and it obviously does so because it used AO3 as its source material.
You and I know it's not any fic writer's fault, but I don't think Disney cares, and it's cheaper to battle AO3 than Elon.
I should stress: AO3 admins are aware. It's been reported. do not clog up their inboxes reporting it again.
The above reasons and more are all arsenal in the armoury of OTW's lawyers. But that's still a battle to fight.
In the meantime, the very least you can do is NOT USE OPEN AI.
Not for a laugh. Not for anything.
And please: spread the word.
Something that I first applied to working with children, and have applied in a limited form to working with adults: you don't need to tell someone when they read your instructions wrong. Sometimes it's enough to point out what they did right and then whatever they didn't do? You ask them to do it in more precise words, and you make it sound like it's a new request. Remarkable how fast things get done this way.
So, Iâve seen a ton of Twitter users talking about making and sharing their new tumblr blogs, to escape Elon Muskâs âanti censorshipâ bullshittery. First of all: welcome! I know itâs looking bleak over there; especially for trans people. But, now that youâre here, Iâm here to tell you all about tumblr etiquette, how this website works, and how itâs different from Twitter. Because you canât come onto here acting like itâs Twitter, lest The Beast get to you.
First, here are a small handful of tips and tumblr facts!
Your likes and who you are following are automatically set to public. You can make them private in your settings!
You can block tags from the settings, too.
There are lots of bots on here. If youâre not careful, you could be mistaken for one! The main way you can avoid this is changing your icon and header from the defaults. Adding a bio helps too!
You can queue and schedule posts so that your account posts throughout the day.
Like Twitter, tumblr has a radical feminist and TERF problem. However, theyâre pretty easy to spot. There are lots of guides out there to help you learn how to spot tumblr TERFs!
Tumblr, for the most part, does not have any celebrity or brand accounts.
Your tumblr follower count is private.
You can have multiple accounts with the same email, and theyâre very easy to switch between! These are called âsideblogsâ.
Your main page is not a âtimelineâ. It is a âdashboardâ!
You can have a custom desktop theme using HTML! Think like ye olde MySpace days. There are tons of pre-made tumblr themes available, if youâre not already proficient in HTML; including free ones!
Now, letâs talk tumblr etiquette and how itâs different from Twitter. Youâre a tumblr user now! Itâs time to start acting like it!
Donât just like posts. They donât increase visibility whatsoever. The way that you can help posts that you like is reblogging them to your blog. Especially for art!
We donât say âoomfsâ or âoomfiesâ. Just âmutualsâ is fine, thanks!
Adding onto a post with pointless comments is frowned upon. If all you have to say it âthis is so true,â or something else to that effect, you should put that in the tags of your reblog.
Most people donât have carrds or rentries on here. Some of us do, but itâs not an obligation like it is for Twitter.
Similarly, we donât censor words like âdieâ and âdeathâ. Posts about wanting to brutally murder people in power go viral all the time, and itâs completely allowed. Iâm serious! Enjoy your newfound freedom!
Blocking isnât a big deal here. Get rid of any weird notion you have that morality is linked to blocking certain people.
But lastly, and most importantly:
Drop your discourse at the door.
If you try to post about most of the things that Twitter users discourse about, you will be laughed off the site. Especially Twitter LGBT+ discourse. Posts actively mocking topics of Twitter discourse go viral on here regularly.
Tumblr has mostly healed since its discourse-ridden days, and itâs now much more chill. Of course, discourse still happens, but it is so easy to avoid now. For a lot of us, tumblr is the last pleasant social media site left, so donât ruin it.
Here is a list of discourse-related things that tumblr users donât do:
Most of us donât do callout posts, unless itâs something actually serious (like that one blog that had a human slave).
Everything that you heard on Twitter was âexclusiveâ to certain LGBT+ groups is used by just about everyone on here. Bi women use the double venus symbol on here. Youâll just have to learn to live with that.
In particular, I want to emphasize how much we donât do flag discourse. To the point that somebody caring about flag discourse of any kind is how we tend to identify an ex-Twitter user.
On here, you will never have to see another slur discourse post again, unless you actively seek it out.
Youâre free.
Youâre welcome. And enjoy your time on here!
UM GUYS. I JUST NOTICED A CRAZY ISSUE W THE TUMBLR UPDATE.
Me to the shadow in the living room at 4:57 AM: No you do not understand the perfection of White Starâs death being so quick and unimpactful. He is someone who lives for the attention. His god complex is so empowered that he hates when something doesnât go his way or heâs not the center of attention drives him insane. The whole fated rival bullshittery with Cale was just that, making it all about himself again. He needs to be important! So Yoo Ryeo Han making his death so quick and completely forgotten in a span of paragraphs is literally the finest torture for that manâs nonexistent never resting soul. Itâs not that Cale didnât struggle to kill him. We didnât really get to see what Cale was feeling using Instant like the time he broke the statues, we only saw what everyone else was seeing. Cale was probably struggling a lot going towards White Star. But that doesnât matter! He will never know that and he died with the thought that he was killed in the span of 2 sec without even a fight. THATâS PATHETIC FOR HIM! A man who lived for the drama, died i. The most uneventful way possible for him and thatâs the HELL for him and I LOVE IT! Itâs similar to Lockeâs death in QON where he died off screen and barely given a paragraph to describe his death. Literally the biggest FU to these bastards is not caring about their deaths. Itâs what they would have wanted and we ainât giving them that. So what Iâm trying to say is that Yoo Ryeo Han is literally a genius when writing their character and especially scenarios depending on their personalities and how they would react in those situatioâ

In case anyone finds it helpful because mobility aids are horrifically expensive and inaccessibleâŠ
And for those people who have access to mobility devices but might benefit from a second chair they can abuse without risking expensive damageâŠ
Erik Kondo has made a website, Open Source Innovations, that details plans for DIY wheelchairs. These wheelchairs can be made from common materials like wood, plastic, and pvc. They are lightweight and can be custom fit to the user allowing from the same degree of movement you would get from a custom chair. And they are durable and easily repairable. (he has been stress testing his latest design by dropping it down stairs, dropping it out of a car, launching it across a driveway, and throwing it off a deck). Its 12lbs and I think he said its was in the $200 ish range for parts.
He also is working on cheap, open source, accessible designs for beach chairs, off road chairs, motorized attachments (think smart drive), and so on. Plus he skateboards in his wheelchair. Cool dude, helpful info, pass it on.
can someone help me find the poem about taking a bug outside, and how âif i were ever somewhere I wasnât supposed to be, I hope someone would gently usher me outside tooâ but i KNOW thats not the line pls help
