sometimes i randomly remember toothless and hiccup’s reunion at the end of the 3rd httyd movie and start sobbing hysterically
Something I like specifically about Hiccup’s ‘being different’ story is that it actually makes sense.
There’s the cliche of ‘I’m not like everyone else and I get bullied for it’ trope where the character tries to ‘be like everyone else.’ Than discovers that no matter what anyone thinks, they should anyways be themselves. And while that is a good message, it’s not very applicable to certain situations.
Hiccups story is a bit different and I think it works and hit harder than any of those stories.
And it’s for a specific reason.
They don’t take into account the culture of a place.
The reason hiccup is ostracized is not because he’s ’quirky and weird’ (mostly) but because he doesn’t fit the societal beauty standards of his culture. Hiccup is very much culturally a Viking. He’s just tiny. And because of that he doesn’t fit into the mold.
But he doesn’t try to fit in by becoming the strongest or by being an axe wielding master. Hiccup never tries not to be true to himself.
Hiccup never needed to fit in, the village needed to fit him if that makes sense.
Hiccups a Viking in the sense that he’s socially and culturally like them but isn’t able to follow that culture because of his stature.
The outlier of this is the fact is that Hiccup will never have the guts to kill a dragon. This is evident in the first movie as well.
His story is very similar to Luz’s from The Owl House in the sense that they never tried to be something that they weren’t. (They’re also both neurodivergent coded but most characters in both shows are so it’s less about being different because of that)
Not my best analysis but it’s very late and I’m sleep deprived.
Me when I finally have the urge to write again after two months of being dehydrated and deprived of the sweet nectar that is motivation.
Ever fall in love with an artist in a different fandom and just think, "Wow, I love their style, I wonder what my favorite boy would look like in it?" That's the emotion I have around @luxmoogle! She draws (at least on that blog) for Kingdom Hearts, and I just desperately wanted to see her interpretation of Hiccup.
So I commissioned a sketch!
I then took the sketch to full color because I love coloring. This was a very fun project (and makes me want to do more collabs...)
The finished version!
I’ve been reading the fic Defiance for a while and Adora’s new look in it gave me inspiration to draw. I LOVE winged people. So much. 400k words in and I don’t remember if they mention lighting scars but I gave it to her anyway.
Also they didn’t mention what type of bird wings she has so I gave Adora Elliptical wings! They are used for short fast bursts of flight and are good for quick maneuvers :)
grammar this. grammar that. sometimes 'grammatically correct' just doesn't hit the spot. the vibes are telling me to laugh in the face of the english language and that's exactly what I'm going to do, one incorrectly structured sentence at a time.
inner monologues of the hunger games characters: coriolanus snow: deranged insecure manipulative sociopath with every attachment issue ever haymitch abernathy: dork who happens to be charismatic and tends to switch between smart and stupid constantly katniss everdeen: autistic

peeta: he outsmarted the others
haymitch in his games: drinks poison water, falls asleep in a blueberry patch without attempting to cover his tracks, tries to pet a bunny during the countdown, makes an alarming number of bunny-related decisions in general
I know purple shampoo didn’t actually exist in httyd, but astrid had to have used some kind of substance to make her hair more of a light blonde color cause there’s definitely a difference between the first movie and the third.
oogh. augh
