I'm usually chill when I use English, but I kinda messed up this time… Sorry about that.

So, this post is basically a translation of the Korean post you can find in this link.

Initially, I was all calm and composed while translating, but in the end, I couldn't keep it together.

If Urasawa offed Grimmer in the story because their chemistry was just too good to handle? Maybe Urasawa didn't know what to do with them. Like, imagine if everything got resolved and Grimmer survived; they'd totally grab that beer they promised each other, right? And they'd probably realize how similar their pasts and issues are, becoming BFFs in no time with a "You too? Same here." kinda vibe.

So what would be next for them? Runge would ditch the BKA and tag along with Grimmer on his globetrotting adventures, right? Picture Grimmer, slinging a huge bag over his shoulder, turning to Runge (who's rocking some comfy casual wear instead of his usual suit) and asking, "You ready?"

This could've been the ultimate queer ending, so I can't help but suspect that Urasawa was like, "Nope, can't let that happen," and had Grimmer bite the dust. I've been ranting about this to my fellow Monster-loving friends since last year, and now that we're halfway through 2023, I'm still going strong, even translating this into English and posting it on Tumblr. It's just… my heart is so heavy…

I kinda feel like Urasawa is way too into preserving the hetero norm and the whole family thing, which rubs me the wrong way… Sure, it was nice to see Runge regain his humanity and reconnect with his daughter, but taking Grimmer away from him was just cruel. What's so wrong with Heinrich Runge starting fresh with another man? It's like Runge's boyfriend got stolen by the Creator himself… snatched away as soon as they met… How am I supposed to deal with that? I know, of course, that there's a reason why Grimmer was died, and I know that it's the same reason why Johan's real name wasn't revealed… But still, that's not enough…

My inner overinvested otaku is seriously losing its mind over this.

But seriously, if Grimmer had lived and been with Runge, he might've actually gotten his name back… I have no doubt Runge would've played a huge part in helping Grimmer find his true name…

And can I talk about how hilarious it is that Runge was one of the people begging Vardemann to prove Grimmer's innocence in Another Monster? It makes sense for Tenma and Suk, but Runge too? Is it funny or just… I dunno, when I read that part, I couldn't help but think that Runge had some low-key love for Grimmer and held out hope for him. Why else would he care so much about someone he only knew for a day or two?

As someone kinda similar to Runge (which sounds weird, I know), I'm pretty sure he fell hard for Grimmer at first sight. Runge might've seemed chill around Grimmer in Ruhenheim, but deep down, he was shook and amazed. Like, "There's actually someone like this out there?" But it wouldn't have been easy for Runge to acknowledge those feelings, and he might not even have realized it. So he played it cool and treated Grimmer like usual, all the while being super drawn to him. Basically, Runge fell head over heels for Grimmer right away and found a glimmer of hope. If I had to put that hope into words, it'd be: Maybe with this person, I could discover something totally different from everything I've experienced so far.

Yeah, that's the kind of faint yet powerful hope…

But the cold, uncaring Creator… that heartless Creator ripped Grimmer away from Runge…

Love makes a couple look alike pt.2

To test my editing skills, I intentionally created a video using extremely limited materials. The result… I can't say I'm 100% satisfied, but I felt pretty good making it.

Here's the 4K modified version. I leveled up the quality, nailed the font, threw in some extra scenes, and spiced up the effects. I didn't intend to work so hard on editing this video, but editing the effect was essential to explain the scene below...

+) One hidden metaphor:

The red mist through this scene is actually the bloodstains left behind by Grimmer on the walls. Despite Grimmer's own life being laden with regrets (hinted by the glimpse of Kinderheim 511's facility + bloodstains), the instant he encounters Runge, his life transforms into something that everyone else would yearn for, full of envy.

I'm finally dropping the video I made back in September last year. I mashed up two totally unrelated movies into one creation. These flicks are my all-time faves. Surprisingly, the main characters have so much in common that I couldn't resist blending them together and imagining what it'd be like if they shared the screen.

아마 내가 텀블러에 한국어로 그리머x룽게에 대해서 처음 글을 쓴 사람이 되겠지...미래에 생길지도 모를, 이 가난하고 가난한 주식에 모든 것을 투자해버린 한국인 분을 위해서 작성함. 생길지 의심스럽긴 하지만 어쨌든...당신은 혼자가 아닙니다...당신만 외롭게 이 지구상에서 혼자 이 컾을 좋아하는 게 아닙니다.........여기에 쓴 내용에 대해서는 나중에 잘 다듬어서 영어로 번역하긴 할 거임.

나오키가 그리머를 죽인 건 지도 당황해서 그런 거 아니었을까? 캐릭터를 등장시키고 루엔하임까지 가게 한 건 좋았는데 거기서 룽게와 만나게 하고 보니 이 자식들 케미가 쓸데없이 좋아서 지도 난감해진 거 아님? 아니 생각을 해 봐...모든 사건이 일단락되고 그리머가 살아남으면 이 자식들은 당연히 약속대로 맥주 한 잔을 하게 될 거고, 자기들의 과거와 안고 있는 심리적인 문제가 너무도 비슷하다는 걸 알아차릴 거 아님? 말 그대로 단기간에 야 너두? 야 나두! 상태가 돼서 찐친이 될 거잖아? 그럼 뭐가 기다리고 있겠어? 룽게는 BKA 때려치우고 전 세계를 다시 자유롭게 돌아다닐 그리머를 따라가지 않겠음? 그리머가 큰 배낭 매고 "준비 다 됐어요?"하며 고개를 돌리면 "자네야말로 준비는 끝났나?" 하면서 사복 차림에 가방 든 룽게가 나오지 않겠냐고...말 그대로 역대급 퀴어 엔딩 나게 생겼으니까 나오키가 헉 그건 안 되지 하면서 그리머 죽인 거 아니냐는 킹리적 갓심이 든단 말임. 이거 작년부터 입이 닳도록 하던 소리인데 2023년의 절반이 지나가고 있는 이 시점까지 꽤 진심으로 떠들고 있다는 게 웃김.

개인적으로 나오키는 이성애 정상가족 지키기에 미쳐 있는 것 같아서 좀 거부감 드는 부분이 있음...룽게의 인간성 회복으로 딸과 대화를 다시 시작한 묘사를 넣는 건 좋았는데...얘한테서 그리머를 뺏어가는 건 정말 너무 했음...남자와 새 시작을 하는 하인리히 룽게가 뭐 어때서요...룽게는 창조주에게 남친을 뺏긴 거나 다름없는 거야...만나자마자 뺏겼어...어쩔 건데 이거...아 나도 알고 있어 그리머를 죽인 이유가 있는 거 당연히 나도 알지 그리고 그건 요한의 실명이 밝혀지지 않았고 어머니와 재회했는지도 모호하게 그려진 이유와도 같다는 걸 나도 잘 알아...아니 시발 그래도 그렇지.........대충 이런 생각의 흐름을 타고 내 안에 있는 오몰입 과타쿠가 날뛰는 편

그리고 혹시 누가 알겠음. 그리머는 살아 있었다면, 그리고 룽게와 함께였다면 그때는 정말로 자기 이름을 되잦았을지 누가 알겠냐고...나는 의심하지 않아...그리머가 이름을 찾는 과정에서 룽게는 반드시 관여될 거라고 의심하지 않는다고...

어나더 몬스터에서 바데만에게 그리머의 무죄를 입증해달라고 부탁한 사람 중에 룽게가 있다는 것도 너무...너무...웃겼음........아니 텐마와 수크가 그러는 건 매우 납득이 되는데 너까지? 이건 그냥 웃기다고 해야 할지....걍...그 묘사를 보고 룽게가 그리머를 알게 모르게 사랑했구나, 그리머에게 희망을 걸고 있었구나 이 생각밖에 안 들었음. 그게 아니라면 꼴랑 하룬가 이틀 정도 만난 사람에 대해서 그렇게까지 신경을 쓰겠냐...

이건 내가 룽게와 비슷한 부류의 인간(쓰고나니까 졸라 이상한데 어쨌든)이라서 더욱 자신 있게 할 수 있는 말임. 룽게는 그리머에게 첫눈에 반했을 확률이 높음. 루엔하임에서 그리머를 대하는 룽게의 그 일련의 태도는 평정을 지키고 있는 것처럼 보이지만 사실 깊게 동요하고 있고 놀라워하고 있다는 의미임. 말하자면 "세상에 저런 사람이 정말로 있다고? 와..."하고 있는 상태. 근데 룽게가 이 날 것 그대로의 감정에 진입하는 건 결코 쉬운 일이 아니었을 거고, 자각조차 잘 하지 못했을 거임. 그래서 룽게는 일단 평정을 지키고 평소의 태도대로 그리머를 대하지만 사실은 굉장히 이끌리고 있는 거라고 난 확신할 수 있음. 말하자면 룽게는 그리머에게 첫눈에 반했으면서, 어떤 희망을 발견했던 거임. 이 사람과 함께라면 어쩌면 지금까지 삶에서 봐 왔던 것과는 전혀 다른 것을 찾을 수 있을지도 모른다는 옅지만 강렬한 기대와 희망말임. 근데 창조주께서...무심하신 창조주께서...룽게에게서 기어코 그리머를 앗아가버림................아 지금 타자 치고 있는데도 빡치네 나오키 용서 못 해 진짜

I'm not big on introducing myself, to be honest. But as I'm getting the hang of Tumblr, I thought I'd share a little something about myself and what this blog is all about. So, here's a quick rundown.

I mostly talk about Naoki Urasawa's 'Monster' on this blog, but I can also randomly ramble about other stuff. Sometimes, you might stumble upon personal posts.

I'll go all out for what I love. Writing oneshots and analysis, drawing pictures, making videos, editing images, taking photos, sharing playlists, creating AI character bots, and doing translations. These days, my focus is mostly on making videos. Of course, I'm not one to rush things. I go through a lot of reviewing and contemplating before posting, so it might take a while before you see everything I'm working on.

I primarily use English on this blog. But I can switch to Japanese or Korean when necessary. When it comes to meaningless self-talk and sharing my translation work, I often switch to languages other than English.

I will never see you as incapable just because you have a question. And I could never write you off just because you didn’t quite “get it” the first go around.

I'm sorry for showing too many reactions at once. I hope this mention doesn't overwhelm you. I've been listening to your playlist one by one, and I'm deeply moved with each song… The songs you have chosen fit them perfectly. They contain a sense of loneliness but never become excessively melancholic, and each of them expresses emotions in their own lovely way. I can tell how you perceive Grunge very well. (Looking back now, I feel a bit embarrassed because the songs I selected tend to be overly sentimental.) Thanks to you, I'm discovering a lot of great songs!

A Grimmer x Runge playlist

I saw @arayashikiii's Grunge playlist, and for a while I've been considering whether I should share mine or not. After some internal debate, I decided that it won't hurt if I share it. Oh…! I didn't expect to receive a reply from you! Actually, I have been contemplating whether to share this information for a very long time before finally deciding to mention it. (If you felt it was a sudden mention, I apologize.) From what I have observed, there have been instances where "Nioi" was translated literally as "smell" in various languages, while in other cases, it was often rendered as "atmosphere" or "air". In our position, where we need to infer the "hidden context" from the canon, I believe that whichever interpretation you choose, it can be an appealing interpretation!🥰

Grunge

I hate saying stuff, because I always regret it in the end. But once in a blue moon my desire to say something grows so strong that I crawl from under my rock and make some sort of a statement somewhere. It's that time now.

I've already talked my friend's ear off with this crap, but it's still not enough. It also drives me up the wall that I don't see this stuff being said all the time, or at least some of the time. I guess I don't see it being said at all. So I guess I have to say it myself. 

I'm talking about this huge thing Runge canonically has for Grimmer. Not even in the romantic sense... Let me explain. In the crudest of terms, too.

By the time Runge makes it to Ruhenheim, he is already not quite the same as he was at the start. His path to Ruhenheim was the most tedious, and yet he still got there before everyone else. And Grimmer definitely catches his eye when they intersect. Again, not in the romantic sense. They just go around the town, exploring the surroundings and kinda watching each other. And they both know. They know what's going on, they know who the other person is, but they just waltz around it for quite some time. Until they finally have a proper conversation in that desolate place. And that conversation, man...

They understood each other with half-word, literally skipping a good portion of talking, because that would just be redundant. Runge is absolutely chill with the idea that Grimmer might be a murderer. The guy has a nice smile, so who cares, right? Grimmer states that Runge "smells like a detective". Is it just me, or does that sound, uhhh... extremely weird? Almost in a flirty sort of way. Because you gotta get pretty close to someone to take a good whiff of them. And hearing something like that being said about yourself, it must be pretty embarrassing, or confusing, or thrilling. What does that even mean, by the way? I thought so hard about it, and I still can't tell for sure. What do detectives smell like? Gunpowder, paperwork and cold, hard determination? Do they reek of sweat, or some special kind of cologne? I have no idea. But I guess Grimmer has, and Runge, he just stands there, looking at him like it's a given.

And after that, they just click. "Oh, hey, we're on the same page, we're after the same thing". And without any negotiation, they simply decide that they work together now. I am fully convinced that at this very moment Runge went, "This one". No context, just – "This one", about Grimmer. 

He then proceeded to entrust Grimmer with his most important evidence, the very one that led him to Ruhenheim. And then, at Versteck... Man. His "I'll buy you a beer" says so many things, just because it came from Runge. He doesn't have any friends. He doesn't even communicate with his colleagues properly. But, somehow, he is still willing to bond with Grimmer. I guess it's a "we're the same, so let's be alone together" thing. At the same time, he's just heard Grimmer stating that he cannot enjoy simple pleasures in life. That means, he wouldn't be able to enjoy this suggested after-work-beer either, right? So Runge's invitation serves as a double promise: that they'll get the job done and make it out of Ruhenheim alive, and that Grimmer will be fixed enough to finally enjoy that beer with him. 

Needless to say, Runge really, really wanted to keep Grimmer alive. And he doesn't cope with Grimmer's death well. Say what you will, but visiting someone's grave with a beer after A YEAR that they've passed, lamenting how you wish you would have known them, is pretty damn strange. And I suppose Runge might've visited Grimmer's grave prior, too, with some periodicity. The card, the plans, the beer, the hinted promise – he really wanted Grimmer to become his friend. And just because it's Runge, who refused to even engage in a casual talk with his peers and barely cared that his wife and daughter abandoned him, this thing he has for Grimmer seems to be especially large, unalloyed and special.

Essentially, the word "Nioi (匂い)" in Japanese literally translates to 'smell,' but it is also used subjectively to express 'guessing' and 'certainty' when sensing something. In other words, the term "detective's smell" is used to emphasize the strong intuition of sensing something detective-like. Considering the original Japanese text, Grimmer's remark to Runge that he smells like a detective can be most appropriately interpreted as "he gives off a detective vibe, almost certainly." However, I still believe that there can be 'ambiguous' interpretations of this statement. In other words, Grimmer deduced that Runge was a detective based on his words and actions, but it's also possible that Grimmer was literally close enough to smell him. After all, "Nioi" is still a word that refers to smell. In that sense, I wholeheartedly agree with your opinion!!

And I suppose Runge might've visited Grimmer's grave prior, too, with some periodicity. The card, the plans, the beer, the hinted promise – he really wanted Grimmer to become his friend. And just because it's Runge, who refused to even engage in a casual talk with his peers and barely cared that his wife and daughter abandoned him, this thing he has for Grimmer seems to be especially large, unalloyed and special.

first of all, in typing I just realized they all have one (except tenma technically but he does have closure with eva) but you think if Grimmer/Lunge ever ran into their ex-wife again they'd speak to them?

Oh, that's a fun question! I'm going to run with the assumption here that they are aware of the presence of their ex-wife but have not actually made contact yet and the ex-wife has not seen them, since I think if the question was "would they talk to them if they actually ran into each other" it would be an easy yes. But under these conditions...

I would say definitely yes for Lunge. While things ended very badly between himself and his ex-wife, and even his daughter, we do see closure with the latter wherein he's started to communicate with her via email. I think that it's meant to hint at him wanting to repair things with her and, if not have what he once did, at least be a part of her life. As far as his ex-wife goes, I think Lunge knows that wasn't working out and would not want to pursue mending things in the same way, but rather if he saw her, he would want at the very least to know how things are going in her life, and for her to know how his life is going. For him, it's a sort of formality in their separation. After that, though, I don't know that he would want to communicate with her. It would feel improper to him when they've finally put to rest the fact that things are over and their chapters together have finished. Lunge has always seemed to be the sort of person who, if someone is "out" of his life, can easily let go of them.

For Grimmer, it's a little complicated. I actually see him as a sort of strange inversion of how Lunge would act, in that it would be more difficult to get him to actually reach out to her, but if he did, he would be more inclined to hold onto her as someone in his life - maybe not through prolonged communication, but as someone he thinks about. I think with Grimmer, what would hold him back from ever communicating with her is the fact that he feels he ruined her life. He married her because it was the "right" thing to do for his job as a spy - something that hurt her terribly because she could never get the love that she wanted. I honestly think that Grimmer might feel she would be better off never seeing him again. Trying to come back from that, even with his newfound access to his emotions, would only hurt her - and he wouldn't want to drag that back to the surface for her. Even more so if she's remarried and seems to be happy. Now, if he saw her and she looks miserable, I do think he would readily approach her. He doesn't want to be liked by her at all, but as a more empathetic person than he was at the time, I think he would want to try to help her feel better, if possible. And if she wants nothing to do with him and continues to hold a grudge, well...she's allowed, and he won't ever bother her again.

In the end I think they both want closure with their exes - it's just that for Lunge that closure would be very much final, and allow him to no longer think on her in the future, whereas for Grimmer she would become yet another lens through whom he can contextualize his personhood. And if she responds positively to him, then the potential of becoming a friend is something he would entertain.

Ruminating on how the "computer" in Inspector Lunge's brain works and its existence in personal social situations, like him typing in private moments he wants to remember. In particular, I wonder whether or not he stores visual information in this "computer", because by the way he types the information into his head I would assume that no, he can't "store" complete visual information that way. Thinking about how maybe his visual memory pales in comparison to the computer-like memory he has for written facts. Maybe it's hard for him to remember what his family looked like back when they were all together, happier, and younger, or him trying and failing to memorize the colours of a sunset. Is he good at remembering faces? I imagine him sometime after Ruhenheim trying to visualize Grimmer's face and failing to make a coherent picture in his head. He tries to draw a picture, but he can't get it quite right that way, either.
