Anyways yeah instead of paying attention in class I decided to translate the second half of Birth to My Creation from Frankenstein: A New Musical into French for fun. There are certainly some lines that are more clunky and weirdly translated as I tried to keep somewhat similar to the original syllable counts and rhyming scheme and couldn’t think of a better translation, but lyrics are under the cut:

Comments:

I am not a song writer nor a translator and I didn’t want to stray too far from the original lyrics even though song translations often change things around a whole bunch, so take this as a fun little side project, not anything serious. There are some things that bug me (I really wanted to keep “La vie éternelle… réanimation…” since it fits so nicely but “La réanimation” was too clunky, so...)

There are some other lines where it’s like “this is a weird way to word this, but the rhyme...it’s so sweet” which I’m just going to stick with. I was also trying to go for wording that didn’t require referring to Victor as a member of mankind -- it’s the birth of a new savior, not our new savior -- without explicitly referring to Victor as a god himself. That said, I was also thinking of savior as in the Christianity “Jesus the savior, the son of God” way.

Oh, and since the second “La vie éternelle” segment isn’t sung by Victor himself, I changed that one from saying “I enslave” to “He enslaves.”

Anyways that’s just a bit of my thought process while making this. As stated, some of the lines are...ehhh, so I don’t mind if anyone sees this, steals a couple lines, and then rewrites the rest haha. Like I said, this was just for fun and I didn’t spend very long on it so there’s definitely room for improvement!

Sticking some comments/observations about terrible job listings I’ve seen as of late below the cut.

I’ve been job-searching as of late and some of the job profiles I’ve seen are just. So pathetic, especially in terms of low-balling candidates.

I saw one that I thought was particularly bold with “this internship is unpaid, but we value our mentors’ time at $6,000/month” yeah well unless your internship program’s mentoring is paying 18k to my rent and groceries, I don’t care. I certainly wouldn’t pay that much for the pleasure of learning from you lot.

Saw one particularly bold opening for a web developer (? I think it was that) that was straight up “you won’t receive any compensation for your work until the finished product begins pulling income” Hello???? People join start-ups for the stock options, pay, and environment -- here, all you are is a guy with an idea who’s getting a programmer to make it for you for free, and maybe you’ll pay them if it becomes successful down the line.

One rather shifty job listing had something along the lines of “we’re a team of three with our own discord server; join our experienced developers in developing our start-up of a unique shopping site.” They’re three random guys in a Discord server brainstorming the 10,000th shopping site, they’re not even a real startup.

And all the unpaid internships!! Occasionally I’ll see one company spam-post a dozen+ unpaid internships all at once, all being full-time and having a huge list of qualifications and responsibilities. Pro tip: if a company is unpaid, uncompensated interns all the way down and they’re all working on huge projects that the company will be making a profit off of, it’s illegal.

Special shoutout to the companies that make you take a coding assessment before they’ll even consider your resume. I’m not great with leetcode and I recognize that it’s very common in the application/interview process for this field, but I refuse to spend a few hours on an online assessment or take-home assignment that was sent out to all 2 thousand of us applying for this role, only to be filtered out afterwards not because of the results of the assessment that wasn’t even looked at by a person, but because my resume wasn’t in the top 50 or whatever (also not looked at by a person).

Also just the general annoyingness that job sites get up to. The “recruiter” agencies that spam regular job listings with their “sign up and we’ll match you with a job” stuff. And the job sites that make you create a login just to apply, and then spam you with random emails about other jobs, etc. etc.

Also the random...spam jobs, I guess is what they are? Ones that are clearly duplicates of other listings, and don’t even have the company name changed. I assume they’re just to fish for personal information and add you to calling lists or something.

I dunno. This post is written more aggressive than I feel, I’m more just vaguely dissatisfied in a I’m-not-mad-just-disappointed way. Job applications hard haha

Everyone’s always talking about Jekyll and Hyde adaptations but we don’t get even a single shoutout to that one Animorphs book where Rachel turns into a starfish and gets cut in half by some sadistic kid so when she morphs back into a human she ends up being two separate people, nice/cowardly Rachel and mean/reckless Rachel, and through misadventures realize that both halves of her need to work together to be herself so they morph into each other and fuse again into one person to restore the Rachel we all know and love
