A shepherd tends to their cow, who is drawn in a style reminiscent of cave art and has a halo above their horns.

For the occupant of the house—the lonely individual advancing along its corridors—every shut door therefore feels as if it conceals something, even if it is only the horror of vacuity. In rational enlightenment discourse such sensations can be explained in terms of an inflamed imagination that ought to be kept in check by reason. Yet the gothic imagination itself . . . was a direct response to enlightenment thought; it was an irruption of all that rationalism suppressed. In this sense, the gothic sensibility was the other at the age of reason—its own kind of revenant—and represented everything rejected by the philosophers of rationalism: madness, sensation, feeling and, of course, the feminine.
