I think one reason It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia resonates with people is because it doesn’t try to present a sitcom reality in which things are always okay and work out, where conflicts are always resolved and where the characters are quirky but not dysfunctional. The Sunny characters are fucked up and they deal with their fucked-up-ness in fucked up ways and often those fucked-up ways are the only ways they have available.
And I think for some people it’s oddly comforting to see that reality displayed on a screen.
If you’ve had an experience in your life where you’ve had to deal with a broken system or where you’ve realized that the only things available to help you cope are imperfect at best or fucked up at worst, if you’ve ever looked around and realized what you got isn’t fair but there’s no way to rectify it….then this show will resonate with you. It makes you feel seen, in some odd way. The way that love and care genuinely exists alongside hurt and trauma and bad decisions and bad circumstances. And it’s all mixed up so you can’t even pull apart if you wanted to. And people don’t get it, so you don’t even try to explain it. And it’s a little fucked up, you know that, but it’s also so good sometimes, and that’s what people don’t get. And, for better or worse, it’s yours. It makes you feel like oh I wasn’t crazy when everyone was acting like I could fix this if I just followed the right steps, but none of those steps actually exists in the way they think it does. And then you just have to laugh, you know? Because this shit is funny and life is funny and it’s good, honestly, it is still good, even when you’re crying, even when it sucks. Something something it’s always sunny even when it’s not, you know?
Or idk maybe you’re just a dudebro who thinks dArK hUmOuR is funny. I’m not gonna tell you how to live your life.
i drew the gang in MTV downtown style cuz it just made sense to me
maybe i would have forgiven them more for mac inexplicably not having a beard in season 16 if dennis inexplicably DID have a beard
how did the most uncomfortable show in the world end up being my comfort show
"I love you."
On the note of this scene, the romantic undertones of both interactions are just so crazy to me like please. Charlie kissing Dee and telling her he loves her is romantic in nature and directly parallels Mac telling Dennis he loves him, which causes the audience to believe Macdennis' "I love you" is romantic as well.
Thinking about how Charlie had thought of Mac as his best friend ever since Dennis banged the Waitress in season one, if not his entire life, only for Mac to say it's bullshit. The entire time Charlie had thought of Mac as his best friend, Mac has thought of Dennis as his. Surely, this wasn't always the case. Mac had been friends with Charlie far longer than he has been friends with Dennis. For most of their lives, Mac must have thought of Charlie as his best friend. When was it along the way that Mac's idea of who his best friend was shifted? When did he decide Charlie no longer fit the bill? What if I started throwing up and screaming and punching the floor?
love him in his gay little hats
Probably been said, but you know, as much as people make the Charlie conspiracy board jokes or doubt themselves about the depth of the show in general or about whether or not Macdennis is gonna be canon, Sunny is one of the literal only shows where nearly every detail feels deliberate to me, even the details that aren't, if that makes any sense, like it's grown in such a way so as to become this whole thing beyond what it ever started out as, and not because of fandom influence, but just because of the natural state of change, where no one sounds like they're grasping at straws or looking too much into it, where there is a structure to trust and they're not just saying it, they’re not fighting it, because I think on some level they know what they've created here, what path they've naturally set in motion and what it means to a lot of people, and I think on every level, they care about what it means to them, personally. The greatest love story ever told is the one that never set out to be one... but the love found them anyway. Sunny is a love story. Sunny is a love story. Sunny is a love story.
