Idk how to say this, i agree with you and other that percabeth isn't the healthiest couple at all (to put it lightly i think) idk if the fandom made it up or something but isn't it said a lot that percabeth inspired was by rick own relationship like he's percy and his wife is annabeth, does this mean he's also in a toxic relationship, idk just a random thought that crossed me and had to share cause idk sorry if this is random!!!

This isn't random, don't worry.

I also thought like that, but I don't want to be to disrespectful to Rick Riordan and his family. There's a bit of a line, and I don't really want to cross it.

Rick did base Percabeth on his relationship, yes. But Thing A that's based on thing B isn't always exactly like Thing B. And honestly, I don't know anything about Rick's relationship with his family, so I'm not assuming anything at the moment.

Sorry if I felt rude to you-I didn't mean to be rude. I just don't want to cross this line honestly.

Misinformation about real Greek Mythology in Percy Jackson, fork spotted in kitchen

Hold up hold up hold up

I was just reading The Hidden Oracle and Apollo says that Calypso is very beguiling, and that Odysseus stayed with her for seven years before returning home.

I-WHAT?

Odysseus didn't stay WILLINGLY. Calypso FORCED him to stay there and literally sexually assaulted him for years before she was forced to let him go by the gods.

This makes it sound like he WILLINGLY stayed with her. Rick didn't need to write that. This is a children's book, yes, but he didn't need to include that sentence at all. Not. At. ALL.

Guys I swear-please never take Percy Jackson as an accurate source of mythology. If you're unsure about something, search it up on Wikipedia or Theoi.com or ask actual Greek people who know.

Solangelo is not Grumpy x Sunshine

One thing that's puzzled me about Solangelo is the grumpy x sunshine dynamic and how everyone thinks it's true.

Excuse me, did we read the same PJO and HOO?

Because in PJO and HOO, Will Solace was never sunshine.

In TLO, we see him heal Annabeth. He smiles and it's exhausted from running around healing everyone. Exhausted and tired and rueful.

And when Connor Stoll says that he's willing to steal, Will glares at him and gives him sharp orders.

In TLH, Will yells at Annabeth for destroying the chariot and scowls at her. Later, when he gives Leo a tour, he looks as if he finds the idea of a sword disturbing. And in the tour scene, he's helpful to Leo (he pats his shoulder too, which is a nice gesture).

In BOO, he calms Clarisse down and prevents a fight, which is good. He tells everyone that his prophetic cabin mates' powers have been affected too. Nico describes him as nonthreatening but brave under fine and Will is insecure about the fact that he's just a healer.

Will helps multiple times by using his taxicab whistle, when defeating soldiers and stopping the Greeks and Romans from fighting. A great example of him being competent on page.

From what we've seen of him so far, he's competent in war and in general and cordial with other people. He's good at diffusing tense situations as well as being insecure about the fact that he's just a healer (though he states that he has a few musical abilities as well, like his piercing taxicab whistle).

This is good enough (especially good material for a future character which was unfortunately botched) but there's nothing to indicate that he's sunshine.

Later, when encountering Nico, Will, who doesn't understand any of Nico's abilities, forcefully orders him not to shadow-travel even when it could possibly save the camp using the phrase 'doctor's orders'.

(This is an example of Will abusing his doctor's authority).

He also says that Nico won't be summoning skeletons again without Nico's permission. You might think that Nico was doing horribly, but even so, Will literally talked for him without his consent. That is not good-it's never good. You shouldn't do anything for someone without their consent, especially not when they're conscious and standing right there.

And then we come to where Nico says that he's leaving both camps.

At this, Will is furious for some unstated reason and then proceeds to victim blame Nico, telling him that he was the one who pushed everyone away. And even if Will was tired and terrified right then, he doesn't apologise later. He just calls Nico dense.

We've literally seen in nearly everyone's POV (Frank, Piper, Leo, Jason and Annabeth-even Percy tells them terrible stories about him that warps their view of him) that Nico is creepy as hell to them. Then how do you expect us to think that the people at CHB actually welcome Nico?

And in TOA he's nice, yes, but by then people were already shipping Solangelo and reducing them to this sunshine x grumpy dynamic.

None of this paints Will as sunshine. Will isn't sunshine just because he's white, blond and a son of Apollo. Stop being so quick to stereotype characters based on their physical traits and parentage.

And Nico isn't grumpy. He's creepy to some people and he has a sarcastic sense of humour. He's quiet, tired and frustrated sometimes, but not grumpy in general.

Stop calling him grumpy just because he's related to death and Will is related to life and healing. This is just flanderisation to fit into stereotypes, and it's sad.

But of course the fandom ruins everything and Rick follows suite.

I just want to say thanks for all of your anti percabeth takes. I never really shipped percabeth and I always felt sort of weird about them but I never realized why until I starting reading your posts. I think Rick is way better at setting up ideas and concepts of a relationships than he actually is at writing them. Like the idea of a Percabeth is great but the execution falls flat. There are so many non-canon Percy ships that have great potential and could be much better than canon Percabeth but this fandom is really against shipping non-canon ships (especially if it involves not shipping Percy and Annabeth)

Thank you! Yes, you are absolutely right-Percabeth's concept is amazing, but in the end, the result is honestly less than desirable. There are many moments between them that do not belong in a healthy couple, much less a golden standard one (though you couldn't make me call Percabeth the golden standard at gunpoint).

ISN'T THERE CANONICALLY PEDOPHILIA IN PERCY JACKSON

Hold on a moment.

Isn't there canonical pedophilia in Percy Jackson.

Since Calypso is stated to have stopped aging at 16 years old physically and mentally and she was young......

And she romanced grown men like Odysseus and Francis Drake (second is a weird choice by a weird author.)

What is Rick's explanation for THAT.

How the hell did Rick not see this?

WHY would you portray Calypso like that. He did Calypso dirty, and she was already so awful in the original Odyssey, but he ruined her even further. Jesus Rick

I rage quit HOO because of the Gaea stuff.

In my eyes it crossed into some misogynistic stereotypes of abuse especially considering the Sally plot line earlier.

Part of me wonders if I'm bring too sensitive or if Rick genuinely has issues with women that don't meet his definition as acceptable.

Once again maybe it hit me at a bad time and I'm accusing so don't take this as an allegation please.

He literally calls Gaea a psycho for wanting to overthrow an abusive husband and save her children when a decade earlier, he wrote Sally doing the same thing.

Rick Riordan is quite inconsistent with his writing, so it's no surprise, but it's still pretty sad considering how popular he is.

And no, you're not too sensitive. Rick Riordan does have issues with women that don't meet his standards. Athena, Aphrodite, Hera, Demeter, Artemis-he ruined all of them for no reason.

He glorified Annabeth's bad behavior and doesn't give her arc a proper ending or talk about her issues. He vilified girls who like makeup and dresses-Hylla literally says that she wore makeup and dresses as a bad thing and the narrative never called her out on it.

The way he treats Aphrodite's cabin in general is terrible-and Piper Mclean is also terribly written.

HOO in general is a terrible series with atrocious retcons and horrendous characterisation with a few good moments.

Don't worry, the wording of this doesn't read as an allegation. You're on anon as well, so it shouldn't be a problem for you if by some catastrophic chance an idiot happens to think that it is, they'll only have me to point at ;)

Cardan Greenbriar with people other than Jude, please

Ok, people, does ANYONE in the TFOTA fandom want more of Cardan Greenbriar on his own?

Because most of the content I see with him is always linked to Jude somehow, and it's getting frustrating. This guy is his own person outside of Jude, yet no one seems to think about that. They just woobify him and reduce him to this himbo character.

What about his platonic relationships? I mean, I know he had an effed up relationship with Locke and Nicasia, but what about with Valerian (his thoughts on Valerian in general? Valerian lore?)

Or Vivienne? Or Taryn? Or his sisters or father or mother?

Or even Cardan with the court of Shadows. The Ghost, the Bomb and the Roach. Without Jude.

Or just on his own. Seriously, Cardan is an entertaining asshole who can be regal and intimidating-

and no one takes advantage of that. He's always dumbed down and placed with Jude. It's always Jude, Jude Jude with him and there's a certain point where it gets too repetitive.

Please make more of Cardan Greenbriar without Jude. I promise you that it is possible.

Hera, India and divorce

I was talking to my friend about divorce and he says- 'Oh, India! Yeah, we have marriage, but no divorce. Absolutely no divorce. Very little divorce. Marriage is there! Abusive, loving, neutral. Arranged, love. But no divorce. Not much divorce.'

'Yeah, Hera would absolutely love it here.'

Realistically speaking, there would definitely have been a Hades cabin

Ok, so I know that the whole 'Hades is excluded and looked down upon' plot in the OG PJO series was interesting, but I just wanted to say-

Realistically, there would most certainly have been a Hades cabin at Camp Half Blood.

Hades was a feared god. People were scared to death by him (figuratively). But he was also hella respected. No one wanted to anger Hades, because he would have your soul for eternity and if he didn't like you..........not a nice way to spend the rest of your afterlife.

People worshipped him. They were scared to speak his name for fear that he would hear and kill them early. They respected and worshipped him because like all gods, he would get angry if they didn't.

So when Camp Half Blood was made, they would most certainly have dedicated a cabin to him out of fear and respect.

It didn't matter if he didn't have any demigods. They would build it for him out of respect, like Hera and Artemis. He was a major god in Greece even if he wasn't an Olympian.

And his demigods would be feared, but they would also be respected. No one would actively exclude them for fear of Hades or his children getting angry.

Not trying to criticise or hate here, just posting my honest thoughts. Feel free to debate with me.

Every fandom is toxic

'Oh, the PJO fandom is so toxic-'

'Ooooooh, Keepblr is so meeeeeeeeean-'

'Ohhhhhhhhhhhh, TFOTA fandom is such a HIVEMIND-'

Find me a fandom that isn't toxic. I swear every fandom is toxic. Find me one that isn't. I dare you.

This is probably super late but, Ares is portrayed as sexist and abusive in PJO but he is the only god who hasn’t raped anyone, and he was a great father which you can see when he killed his daughter’s r@pist.

Don't worry how late it is, anon, just send it. I'll respond to it.

AND YES. YES THAT IS WHAT I'M SAYING.

I mean, Percy could have had a great moment in which he acknowledged that his father was less than perfect and bad at times, but no-he had to mock Ares for defending his daughter and say that it would have been awesome if Poseidon had beaten Ares.

I am shaking my head in disbelief. Rick has a hate boner for Ares, I'm sure.

I’m not even Greek or a pagan but I have so much beef with Rick Riordan.

Me too anon ME TOO. You're not alone. There are so many of us. You could spread the word that while PJO is entertaining, it shouldn't always be taken seriously regarding its portrayal of the Greek Gods. That would help.

STOP ATTRIBUTING EVERYTHING TO GOD AND TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR ONCE

Off topic but it frustrates me to no end that religious people always attribute my actions and achievements to God.

'Oh, you're so lucky, God answered your prayers-'

Noooo no no no no no no, NO.

I am the one worked hard to achieve my goals and I will not have them automatically assigned to a higher being that's nonexistent for me. No sir or ma'am, no I will not.

'Oh, but we need God to be humble-'

Maybe your pea sized little brain needs him for that, but my hulking cranium can take the weight of the fact that I can say that I'm good, great, amazing even at something and not start claiming that I can find the cure for cancer.

Seriously. If you meet an atheist, do not automatically say that everything they've achieved is due to God.

WHY RICK WHY

Rereading BOTL and when Annabeth says the Hera is the one who doesn't belong-

I'm like-

ANNABETH AND PERCY ARE YOU FUCKING DUMB OR WHAT

THIS IS THE QUEEN OF THE HEAVENS. GODDESS OF MARRIAGE AND FAMILY

ANNABETH WHAT ARE YOU DOING GIRL YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO BE SMART AND STRATEGIC AND WISE

WHY ARE YOU INSULTING THE QUEEN. THE FUCKING QUEEN. THE ONE GODDESS YOU DON'T WANT ON YOUR BAD SIDE

If that was the real Hera she'd have blasted them to pieces.

Ok maybe not Percy, but definitely Annabeth, and she'd send cows to bother Percy.

Rick what the hell are you doing. Richard what did you do

I'm fascinated with Rick Riordan's psyche

I've just been reading PJO's Greek Gods-

And Rick Riordan's misogyny IS RIGHT THERE.

Ok-when he says that all the other goddesses bullied Athena because she intimidated them? They tried to exclude her from their 'clique'?

Or when he writes that all the goddesses immediately hated Aphrodite just because she was the most beautiful of them all?

He literally writes, 'The women were like, I immediately hate her.'

Not the goddesses. Just the 'women'.

The way he subtly demonises Athena and Aphrodite.

THE WAY HE LITERALLY WRITES PERCY HATING THEM AND MAKING HORRIBLE COMMENTS ABOUT THEM.

Wow. Oh. My. God.

It's so fascinating. You can learn so much about an author by reading their books, and I'm learning so much about Rick Riordan right now. Has he even changed?

I'm just..........learning so much right now. As someone who studies psychology for fun, PJO is an absolute goldmine to me for learning about Rick Riordan and his views.

Especially now that I'm reading Percy Jackson's Greek Gods and Heroes. Holy shit, if anyone wants to study Rick Riordan, you absolutely HAVE to read those two books (don't take them seriously. Just use them to study Rick's psyche).

Rereading PJO, I've realised that Rick Riordan manages to mock, denigrate and terribly represent literally all the gods except Poseidon and Hestia.

At this point, I don't know if it's funny or not, but someone give Rick one of those reverse award medals where it's actually an award for being the worst at doing something.

The book version of Golden Raspberry for representation of Greek Gods. For Rick Riordan.

Anyway, I'm finishing my Athena essay. Should be here any day now.

Two times Percy harmed Annabeth

You know, in Percabeth, Annabeth is usually the one harming Percy, but there are two interesting moments where the tables are turned.

Let me explain

When Percy tells Annabeth that her mortal parents aren't so bad in TTC on the flight home and that she should stay in touch with them.

Percy.........what? Rick...........WHAT?

I..........I can't say how horribly written this was.

Annabeth was a child. Her stepmother signed up to raise her when she married Frederick. She literally had night terrors which isn't uncommon in children-

And what did her stepmother do? Did she stay and try to comfort her? Did she take Annabeth to her room so that Annabeth wouldn't be alone? Did she check the room for spiders?

No. No, she did none of this. She just told Annabeth that it was a figment of her imagination and told her to stop scaring her baby brothers.

That's not what you do to a scared child. Her stepmother fucked up with that one. Her stepmother was bad for that.

Mrs Chase also called Annabeth a big girl when she was seven.

SEVEN years old is NOT a big girl. Mrs Chase knowingly did what I listed above and that makes her a terrible person. She's not entirely bad, but she's pretty morally black when it comes to Annabeth.

And Frederick is also horrible. He neglected Annabeth and let Mrs Chase not call him home for his daughter when she needed him. Granted, he was working, but he couldn't have called Annabeth and tried to comfort her?

Percy shouldn't have said that and Rick shouldn't have written that. End of discussion, period.

2. Now, here, Percy isn't even there in the scene and he's not trying to actively harm Annabeth, but I still wanted to include it because I do think that it was still harmful in a way.

'Annabeth shook her head. Percy would hate her getting so philosophical.'

I don't remember which book this is from-I think it's from the Mark of Athena.

Annabeth doesn't want to get philosophical because Percy hates it?

All right, there are certain habits that you might have to change because your partner doesn't like it. Smoking, drinking, watching porn, all harmful activities.

But getting philosophical? There's nothing wrong that. And if Percy doesn't like it, well, that's just too bad. There's nothing wrong with a little compromise there.

Annabeth is allowed to have her own thoughts without her thinking about how Percy would like them. Annabeth doesn't always have to get philosophical with Percy-she can do it on her own or with her other friends. This applies to relationships in general.

It's frustrating to see how Percy and Annabeth always cater to each other first and never even think about their own selves or relationships outside of each other.

I ultimately blame Rick Riordan for making them obsessed with each other.

What I like about Shelper

So those of you who've read till the very end of Trials of Apollo know that Piper has now moved on from Jason and is dating another girl who's Native and her age-Shel!

Now, many people didn't like this-I mean, I get their sentiments, since Shel was just shoved right in to make Piper bi.

And I stand by my previous statement about Piper's bisexuality being shoved in and not counting as good representation-

But I think that Shelper is awesome.

Hear me out.

So Piper is actually dating a girl who shares her heritage, her dwindling heritage, and Shel is actually helping her discover her heritage now.

I mean, that's awesome. Wanting to reconnect with your heritage AND find another partner that's also trying to reconnect to said heritage? Piper and Shel were so lucky to have found each other, because they can help each other out a ton.

Things are kind of dangerous for Native Americans trying to reconnect with their culture in the USA, so it's great that Piper will have someone to be with her if she gets threatened or disdained because of what she's trying to do.

I don't think I properly articulated all of my points so I might edit this, but feel free to reblog it.

Percy is the only one who looks happy

Has anyone ever noticed that Percy is the only big 3 kid who looks happy in his official portrait?

Thalia looks fierce, a testament to her character. She's nice, but she's also fierce, which makes up a lot of her personality.

Jason looks concentrated and intense, which is the mask he puts on most of the time as befits his title at New Rome and even afterwards.

Nico looks exhausted and frustrated, which is what he was most of the time in PJO, HOO and even TOA.

Bianca looks sad and wistful, which were her main emotions when she was alive, even after she joined the Hunters and got a little happiness.

Hazel looks cautious and guarded-her eyebrows are drawn together and her body orientation is tense.

But Percy? He's grinning like he's making an inside joke, leaning on sword, holding his helmet, with relaxed body posture.

The entire PREMISE of The Sun and the Star is built on the worst logic ever.

Hades sends his son to literal hell knowing that he could die just to get a Titan (who has his memories back, mind you) out of it. Because apparently 'Bob was getting too loud'.

If Hades can get that satyr out of Tartarus, then why the hell can't he get Bob out of Tartarus?

And don't tell me he can't, because Bob was literally allowed to be a janitor at Hades' palace when his memories were wiped. And Bob decided to be good, so Hades could easily take him out of there

This just says how bad The Sun and the Star is as a book.

I mean, why didn't Rick just give us short stories of Nico and Will between HOO and ToA? That would have been way better.

Yikes, just another toxic Percabeth moment

I was reading Percy Jackson Greek Heroes and I found another concerning Percabeth moment-

Percy says that when he doesn't like what Annabeth likes, she goes all 'man-hazan' (meaning warrior like) on him.

Meaning that she yells at him and is violent when he doesn't like what she likes..........

That's uncalled for. You don't have to like everything that your partner likes. And if they get angry at you for not liking what they like, then that's concerning and you need to talk to them about it.

Percy was not smart-Procrustes was dumbed down

This post is about the 12 year old trio (well, 14 biologically and 28 chronologically in Grover's case) getting caught in Procrustes' store in TLT.

So, our heroes run into Procrustes' store after being chased by mortal teenage wannabe gangsters.

And they come to Procrustes' store where he's nice at first and then traps them in the waterbeds

He leads Annabeth to another bed and when she doesn't want to get on, he pushes her onto it and traps both Annabeth and Grover.

And then he wants to get Percy on a bed, and instead of simply grabbing him and putting him on one........he tries to convince Percy to lie down?

Why did Procrustes have to convince Percy to lie down? Why didn't he push him onto the bed? It was pretty obvious that he could, but for some reason, he stopped and tried to convince Percy.

What, you're telling me that he sat down to demonstrate for Percy, knowing that Percy could just snap his fingers and say ergo and bind him to the bed?

Is this because Percy was agreeable to him? What, did Procrustes not think that Percy might want to rescue his companions and might be lying? Because if so, Procrustes is dumb.

Percy might have rescued his friends, but his wits in this are diminished by the fact that the villain was dumbed down.

Percy wasn't smart. Rick had to dumb Procrustes down, which undermines both the antagonist and our protagonist's supposed smartness. It's frustrating to see people use this as an example-please don't.

Nico and Bianca's backstory makes no sense.

All right, so they were born in the 1930s, but after WWII they're placed into the Lotus Casino. 60 years later, still children, they're taken out and placed into a military school. And we all know what happens next.

But there were a truckload of changes from 1945 to the early 2000s.

And sure, you could argue that they were slowly exposed to it, as seen with the flatscreen TV in the Lotus Casino in their room, but how the hell do you expose all the changes that happened between NINETEEN FORTY FIVE AND THE EARLY TWO THOUSANDS IN A MONTH?!?!?!?!?!.

HOW. HOW DO YOU DO THAT.

Because they were in the Lotus Casino for a MONTH, and that's a very short time to be exposed to all these new inventions.

So in Nico and Bianca's POV, they're just getting all these presents so fast.

'Oh, look, we have coloured TVs now! Oh look, women can wear revealing dresses and pants now! They don't have to dress in skirts and conservative clothing anymore! Oh look, there's something called a computer now! Oh look, we have digital clocks and watches now! Oh look, we have freaking DIGITAL CAMERAS AND PHONES NOW! WE HAVE VIDEO GAMES! WE HAVE VIDEO TAPE RECORDERS! WE HAVE CALCULATORS! DIGITAL CALCULATORS! WANT TO USE GOOGLE? LOOK AT THE INTERNET!'

All this in just a month. Imagine how bewildered they must have been. Clothing changes, fashion changes, the entire damn society changed. Technology had changed. Everything was different. And it was just shoved onto Nico and Bianca. Poor children-I actually feel a little bad for them now.

This post is both critical and comical. Do what you will with this information.

Ok, I need to tell all of you something.

Even if your posts don't get notes, that doesn't mean that someone is seeing them.

People are looking at your posts, they're reading them again and again, even if they're not nothing them.

I've read truckloads of posts that I have not noted. I've read them again and again. I haven't noted them, but I still read them.

Don't think that your posts aren't noticed if they're not noted.

Share this with people, ok? They need to know.

Rick has a lot of terrible logic in his books, and I wanted to list an example here.

IN Trials of Apollo, Apollo is surprised that Meg is a demigod daughter of Demeter, since Demeter rarely falls in love with mortals and has children.

Ok, if that's so, then explain how she already has THREE other daughters that are all teenagers and are all older than Meg?

That means that she fell in love with mortals in in the span of 5-6 years. That's not rare.

And no, Katie's, Miranda's and Billie's ages aren't explicitly mentioned, but it's pretty clear from the text that they're all older than Meg.

This is just another critical post. Nothing special, just thought I'd point it out since it's been bothering me for some time.

LET'S ENJOY GREEK MYTH RETELLINGS AND STORIES BUT NOT TAKE ALL OF THEM SERIOUSLY

You know, I really have to say this.

I don't think that Greeks, Hellenistic Pagans and other people who know Greek Mythology would be as frustrated as they are today if people DIDN'T TAKE MODERN SOURCES DEPICTING GREEK MEDIA AS ALWAYS ACCURATE.

Bear with me now.

All right, so, we all know about Percy Jackson.

And PJO was basically the Greek God make or break of its time and it broke the Greek Gods. Greeks and Hellenistic Pagans had the unfortunate experience of being bombarded with false, incorrect interpretations and thoughts about their deities.

And we have to remember here that to these Hellenistic Pagans, their gods are as sacred to them as God is to Christians. Maybe they wouldn't kill people over their gods, an added bonus, but we must respect the fact that they worship the gods and we must be respectful of Greek Gods when interacting with them.

See, I'm not saying that you can't be lighthearted. You can joke around and all that-it's just that actually hating and condemning the Greek Gods shouldn't be done when you're interacting with their worshippers.

Now that I'm done with that, well, Rick Riordan fucked up with Greek Mythology big time. Making Athena have children, HIS MISOGYNY. THERE ARE ENTIRE TAGS DEDICATED TO RICK'S MISOGYNY, NOT JUST OF HIS FEMALE CHARACTERS BUT OF ACTUAL ANCIENT GREEK GODDESSES. If I did a whole essay on his misogyny, I'd have to make multiple posts.

Rick done fucked up with them. I do not have to be the first person to tell you that.

HOWEVER, I am obligated to say that any author is freely able to portray the Greek Gods as they want (unfortunately at times).

And so Rick is free to interpret them how he likes.

Let's also remember that Rick thought terribly of the Gods and their worshippers when he was writing Percy Jackson and the other series.

Of course, he HAS changed for the better. Now he's more respectful of Pagans and has apologised, which is nice, but I just thought I'd let you know.

See, now we can accept and criticise Rick's writing, but before-

Well, before, it was absolutely awful for Greeks and Hellenistic Pagans. I mean, it's still awful, but it was more awful back then because almost nobody criticised Percy Jackson about depicting Greek Gods terribly. Everyone said that Greek Gods were American and belonged to America-ugh, that was horrible. It's absolutely appalling to do that, no less to Greeks themselves. People ranted about how horrible the gods were.

And I mean yes, the Greek Gods could be awful by modern standards, but we need to remember two things-

The Greek Gods were based on an ANCIENT SOCIETY with DIFFERENT MORAL STANDARDS. Judging them by modern moral standards isn't going to do anything.

The actions of the gods were SYMBOLIC, NOT LITERAL.

a) Artemis' cruelty towards humans? That's the cruelty of nature towards him. Artemis was a nature goddess and she hunted and resided in the wild.

b) Dionysus being kind and charming but also mad and ruthless at times? Well, that's what wine does. It can make people funny and charming to a point, but it also drives people mad and makes them violent.

c) Hades kidnapping Persephone? Well, Hades represents death, and that's what death does-it rips children from their parents' arms. Also, it signifies the fact that daughters and mothers did not have a say in their marriage, the father could give the girl away to any man in those times. Demeter actually being able to get Persephone back was a comfort to grieving mothers.

d) Zeus cheating on Hera multiple times?

There are multiple explanations for this one.

First, kings and princes often claimed to be descendants of Zeus, so Zeus was said to have many affairs with royal mortal women so that their claims to divine lineage could be accurate.

Second, Zeus' rain represented fecundity and fertility. As I said above, the actions of the gods are symbolic and they represent their domains, so he had multiple affairs and loads of children to signify his fertility.

Third, the Greek Gods were based on Ancient Greek society where multiple men took concubines and lovers. And Zeus did this too, because he was a king!

e) Hera punishing the lovers and bastards? That's what queens did to some concubines for revenge, since they couldn't take it out on the king.

It's all either symbolic or based on Ancient Greece. The gods that humanity created were based on those times, and they were created millennia ago, when things were different in nearly every way possible.

Anyway, what I'm trying to tell you is that we're allowed to have fun with these stories and retellings that include Greek Mythology, but if you really want correct information on Greek gods, go and read the myths and the compositions of Ancient Greek poets and playwrights (Homer, Hesiod, etc).

Because many people, when reading these modern retellings and the like, think that they are actually real mythological information and accordingly spew nonsense.

People call Apollo 'Asspollo' and harass his worshippers because of one incorrect comic that came out in 2018. Apollo never raped Persephone.

And people also view famous figures like Odysseus and Achilles incorrectly because of incorrect translations that don't correctly capture the original and CERTAIN RETELLINGS (cough-Madeline Miller-COUGH)

And there are so many more examples I could give, but then this would be too long to post.

See, it's not that the writers completely rip the original lore out. They keep a lot of it, but they also add in some incorrect information. And sometimes this isn't that bad or malicious, it's just incorrect.

So if you're not sure about whether something in a retelling or story depicting Greek Gods is true, you should search it up online or ask someone who knows.

Because Greeks and Hellenistic Pagans are constantly frustrated at how their gods are portrayed and that everyone just takes the retellings as mythologically correct.

TLDR Greek mythology retellings can be fun for you to read but don't take all of the info in them as mythologically correct. You can be lighthearted about the Greek Gods but please don't actually loathe or mock them with others who believe in them and worship them. If you're not sure about info in a retelling or story, then search it up or ask someone you know.

There are multiple blogs on tumblr who can tell you more information about the actual Greek Gods and they're pretty nice about it too, so don't be too afraid.

Does anyone else think about this?

You know, I have to tell all of you something. It's really important, so please read this before any other post that's caught your eye.

I'm glad that there's a large majority of people who accept that Rick kind of fucked up Greek Mythology in Percy Jackson..........

But does anyone feel the same about The Kane Chronicles and Magnus Chase?

The way Rick portrayed Anubis as a hot white teenage emo boy who was SIXTEEN years old when in Egyptian Mythology he was a GROWN ADULT WITH A WIFE AND A DAUGHTER really nags at me.

And, what's more, Anubis 16 while Sadie is at first twelve and then thirteen.

Walt's age is debatable because he's said to be fourteen and then sixteen. It's generally accepted that he's sixteen, but some people also think he's fourteen, so ok, your choice.

BUT ANUBIS IS SIXTEEN AND HE'S DATING A 12-13 YEAR OLD?

If Anubis DID indeed have the maturity level of a sixteen year old (weird choice, Rick) then he wouldn't even LOOK at Sadie romantically, because sixteen year olds don't do that!

It's disgusting, really, to do something like this. And don't start on Anubis not knowing the cultural practices of today. They're not real. Rick Riordan wrote this knowing how disgusting it was. It's unacceptable.

I honestly don't get why Anubis had to be a 16 year old. TKC could have been rewritten with no change if Anubis wasn't a 16 year old and was a proper god. No Saltnubis, which is an added bonus. Polyamory should be for adults, not children or teenager minors.

Also, Anubis did have a wife and daughter-Anput and Kebechet respectively. And they never even get mentioned.

Ok, even if Rick didn't mention them, that Saltnubis plot was horrible.

Also, Isis possessing a British white woman is a little odd when she's Egyptian. Why don't they possess Egyptian people instead. Is it because the main religion is Islam? Then why didn't they just possess Egyptian immigrants? Oh well. not sure about this one.

I mean, I'm not Egyptian or a Kemetic Pagan, but I just wanted to point this out. Sorry if anything I said is rude-tell me and I'll change.

But TKC had something that Magnus Chase did not. It actually respected its gods and reminded the readers that while they took on human forms and possessed humans, they were in fact, still gods. We could tell that they were gods and they inspired a certain amount of awe when they were around.

The gods in MCGA.......just don't have this spark.

I mean, yes, they WERE funny and human at times, but there's a reason that they were worshipped and respected as gods.

And it's frustrating because they should have had that spark. Yes, we see Odin's cunning by disguising himself as a troll, but Heimdall is also made out to be a complete idiot who just takes selfies and neglects his duties of guarding the Bifrost Bridge which is very important.

And Loki.........actually, Loki was kind of evil in the myths, so this one is ok. I'm still a little disappointed at how he never cared for Alex or Sam, though.

I know I'm treading sensitive waters with this one, but there is something nagging at me about how they're portrayed.

VIVIENNE AND HEATHER HURT/COMFORT (Part one?)

Heather grunted and rolled over. Something was missing………….. Her eyes slowly opened. Vivienne was not there. She frowned sleepily. Mmmmmmm, where was Vivienne? Maybe she had gone to the bathroom. Heather yawned and snuggled into the blankets. Vivi would be back soon. And then they'd snuggle and be warm. Yay. But time passed, and Vivienne didn't come back. And far from falling asleep, Heather started to gain more and more consciousess, until she was finally wired enough to go and find out where Vivienne was. Heather slowly walked out of the bedroom and turned on the lights as quickly as possible. Whew. No monsters in the dark. Heather never really believed in monsters until the incident years ago. After that, she'd been more than a little wary of the dark, but she had accepted that not all faeries were out for her, and some of them could be kind. Other than Mother Marrow. That woman gave her the freaky-deakies. Yech. Heather rubbed her eyes and stopped, tensing.

Sobbing sounds were coming from the bathroom. The smell of popcorn was strong and fresh in the air.

How could that be? They HAD made popcorn today, to accompany their watching Superhero Movie, but what was left of it was in the fridge, and it had probably gone cold. So how had Vivienne heated it up again? Did she use magic? her mind said. Heather inhaled sharply and strode towards the bathroom. She didn't like Vivienne using magic in the apartment and Vivienne never did. So why would she use it now..........? 'Vee?' she said softly. 'What happened?' The sobs were muffled by a slap of hand to mouth, then a surprised squeak was emitted. 'N-nothing,' Vivienne's broken voice came from the bathroom. 'I-am-fineHeather. Gobacktosleep.' she said. 'Vivienne……..' Heather pushed open the bathroom door. Their popcorn, the one that Heather had stored in the big green plastic bowl, was trembling on Vivienne's lap. Vivienne's hands were shaking and she was hyperventilating. 'VEE! What happened?' Heather fell to her knees and leaned towards Vivienne, who sobbed and shook her head, wiping her tearstained face. 'The popcorn,' she sobbed. 'Superhero movie. OW.' Heather felt like her heart was breaking. Here Vivienne was, sobbing, and Heather didn't know why. How could she help Vivienne? 'Vee,' she said gently. 'Do you want to tell me something?' Vivienne shook her head, but yet another sob escaped her, and she grabbed a handful of popcorn and stuffed it into her mouth. Vivienne's entire body was shaking. Heather slowly scooted in. 'Vee. You're shaking. Hey, listen to me. Just lean on me for support.' Vivienne gulped and wiped her nose. 'I miss him. It HURTS.' 'Miss him?' Heather asked. 'Do you mean Oak?' 'N-no. I mean-my dad. Justin.' Vivienne said. Heather mentally raised her eyebrows. Vivienne almost never talked about her father. She said that she had two fathers, but Heather had always heard her refer to Madoc as her father mostly, though Vivienne also thought of Justin as her father. Vee sneered at Madoc and took pleasure in taunting him. Heather was uncomfortable about it, so she stayed out of it. Not her problem. But now………'Justin?' she said slowly. 'Your mortal father.' Vivienne sniffed and nodded. 'I-I was going to-' she gestured to the bowl of popcorn. 'Vee, you can tell me,' Heather said, slowly rubbing Vivienne's back as her girlfriend sobbed into her shoulder. Once Vivienne had calmed down, she took a deep breath and gulped. 'My father-Justin. He made me popcorn.' OH. Ohhhhhhhhhh. Of course. Vivienne had always liked popcorn a lot. She made a big bowl for herself every movie night. Somehow, the bowl was always full. So Vivienne clung onto her memories of the mortal world and with it, her mortal parents. Heather had wondered if Vivienne really thought that the big, hulking, scary man was her father or whether the muscular yet gentle-looking man in the rare photos that Vivienne had taken with her was Vivienne's father in her thoughts. Maybe it was both, as weird as that sounded. Maybe that was it. Faerie was weird. Not Vee, though. 'Today. Superhero Movie.' Vivi said weakly. 'Released 2008. Dad and I were going to watch it that night. He made popcorn. But it never happened because-' She smiled weakly and then burst into more sobs. Oh. Oh. OH. Heather sucked in a breath. Of course.

Madoc had killed Vivienne's parents and taken her and her sisters back to Elfhame. When Heather had first heard the story, she was terrified of Madoc. She hadn't wanted to meet him, but Vivienne assured her that he wasn't always violent like that, though he could be 'a total jerk' most of the time. It was hard to believe that Jude and Taryn could love him and Elfhame, hard to believe that they could want to takr their chances with the cruel faeries who plagued Locke's wedding party. Heather had never been able to understand them.

Oh, well, it took all sorts to make a world.

But it was hard to believe that the tall, hefty, frowning man who'd stared at her with those eerie cat eyes was really nonviolent. Heather had shivered. She'd loved Vivienne's cat eyes, but somehow, they looked terrible on Madoc. She had been terrified of Madoc then. And she was still a little scared of him-but there was something else stirring in her now. Anger. Not just anger. Fury. Boiling rage. Heather had seen enough of Vivienne's silent crying and Madoc bothering Vivienne for something or the other. Now, she wanted to stride into his apartment and punch him deep in the gut. She didn't care if Oriana gasped or if she was glamoured or even if Oak cried. Vivienne was hurt, and this bastard had hurt her. Heather remembered thinking that Vivienne was crazy. She remembered her remembrance and the fear that came with it- But she also remembered the pure love that she felt for Vivienne, and her absolute joy and contentment at being with Vivienne again. Vivienne sighed and rested her head against Heather's chest. Heather immediately shifted her weight to accommodate Vivienne. 'Sorry,' Vee mumbled. 'I just really miss him. I mean, I miss both of them really bad sometimes, and now-it's just one of those times. I'm so sorry, Heather. And-and Jude and Taryn don't think that I'm grieving Dad, because Madoc is my dad, but he raised me too, you know? Crap, I'm so sorry.' 'It's no problem.' Heather said, slowly rubbing circles into Vivi's back. She couldn't imagine having a life like that. Just thinking about her parents being murdered made her want to vomit. But to have the murderer be her actual father and to have her sisters love him? Heather didn't have sisters, but she cared for Mikey, and she couldn't imagine how betrayed she'd feel if Mikey loved the man who did that. Vivienne had suffered so much that all Heather could do was be there for her and support her during these trying times. 'Vee,' Heather said, 'Let's not talk about that. Let's go back to bed. Do you want to finish the popcorn, or………?' 'Yeah,' Vivienne said, stuffing handfuls of it into her mouth. Once it was over, she took the bowl and poured water into it, leaving it in the sink to clean tomorrow. They both went back to bed. Vivienne was shivering.

If Madoc came tomorrow, Heather would tear him a new one.

Magnus Chase and The Kane Chronicles were also screwed up

You know, I'm happy about the fact that many people can acknowledge and accept that Rick fucked up the Greek myths and his portrayal of the gods-

But I also feel like the same thing can be said for MCGA and TKC. They represent Norse and Egyptian mythology and I've seen some posts on how Rick effed up THERE-but only a few. Not many others. And yes, TKC is a beautiful series, but it also has some terrible problems.

It's on the tip of my tongue. It's just slipping out of my grasp. But someone needs to talk about Rick screwing up Norse and Egyptian mythology too.
