The Batkids play a game called “Guess Who Bruce Is Disappointed In Today” and it is a bloodsport.
It started as a joke. It is no longer a joke.
Every morning, without fail, one of them walks into the kitchen and says:
“Guess who Bruce is disappointed in today?”
And they all take turns guessing based on crime alerts, nightly patrol rotations, and vibes.
It’s become a system.
It went like:
Jason: “I knocked out a senator by accident. My odds are high.”
Tim: “I drank seventeen Red Bulls and fell asleep on top of the Batcomputer.”
Damian: “I released three bats into Gotham General Hospital as enrichment. They were bored.”
Steph: “I called him ‘Brucie’ in front of a senator.”
Cass: Just raises a finger and shrugs.
Then Bruce walks in, dead silent, pours his coffee, looks at no one, and walks away.
Tim: “It’s Jason.”
Jason: “DAMN IT.
Rules:
If you guess wrong, you have to do patrol with Damian and listen to him rant about the superiority of traditional swordsmanship for two hours.
If you guess right, you get to choose the movie on family movie night.
If Bruce is disappointed in himself, everyone gets ice cream. That’s the law.
It got so serious they made a whiteboard. Labeled it: “DISAPPOINTMENT LEADERBOARD.”
Top scores:
Tim (17 correct guesses, possible mind reader)
Cass (14, reads vibes better than Google Translate reads Latin)
Steph (11, mostly via chaos intuition)
Jason (2. constantly thinks it’s him. It often is. But not always.)
Damian (0. refuses to acknowledge he is ever the cause)
One time Dick guessed correctly for the first time in 3 months and everyone clapped.
He cried.
Alt. Version: Guess Who Bruce Is Proud Of Today.
Game cancelled due to lack of data.
The funny this about John Constantine is that the writers that like him and hate him write him the exact same way.
Like bastard, man whore, selfish, manipulative, self centered, con man, untrustworthy, hated, lives in a horror movie, etc.
Like the writers that like him do that and the writers that hate him think that ate with doing that but it’s just his character.
Y’all. You guys. I’m sobbing over this lyric from I can’t help but wonder
“Used to say I’d capture wind and sky for you”
Because like. HE LITERALLY DID! HE CAPTURED A STORM & HARNESSED THE WINDS THEMSELVES TO GET BACK HOME! I AM FUCKING ILL
Jason: Go kill them. Problem solved.
Oliver: You can't just go around killing people Jason.
Jason: I know. That's why you should do it.
Oliver: No, no. I can't go around killing people, either. Bruce will be mad with me.
Bruce: *eyes twich*
Ngl I feel like Cassie is baned from training any one cause it’s traumatizing.
Like they left her alone with Young Justice for an hour and came back to find them all shot and crying in corners while Cass calls them babys.
It isn’t even her fault because that’s how she trained and was going easy.
Everyone: girl dad bruce 😔😩😌
Barbara:
What everyone pictures when they say girldad Bruce: Guy who adores Cass and treats her like his little princess and lets her get away with everything and will stay still while she does his hair and paints his nails.
What Barbara has seen that actually fits the girldad label in the most toxic of ways: Projection, holding her to the same impossible standards he holds himself because she's Just That Good, isolating her, possessive and threatened by the thought of her dating aka shotgun dad, in denial that she can be anything less than perfect in a way that actively hurts both of them, that kind of specific girldad misogyny where she IS his little princess but this is Not A Good Thing half of the time. Or even most of the time depending on who you ask. Her father's favourite son in the sense that he doesn't particularly care for anything girly she might be interested in and dismisses most of them as a waste of time, but LOVES sparring and solving cases with her. Swings between overbearing when she's doing well and neglectful/dismissive once she messes up. Give Barbara Gordon a hammer and let her bonk Bruce Wayne on the head with it at least once. She's earned it.
Note: This is preboot Bruce and Cass. New 52 and Rebirth Bruce and Cass are a lot healthier but also a lot simpler.
arrowbat reminds me of the song loml
i just listened to it!!! and you're So right.
I loved loved loved writing their dynamics and the whole "Bruce Wayne always meant more to Oliver than Oliver Queen ever did to Bruce." Because it's Oliver's perspective when he says this, so it might not be true, but it also kinda is??
Because we don't really See how Bruce felt about Oliver, but we can absolutely tell there's care, but also Layers of denial in there ("while he and Oliver had been… him and Oliver.") and he might have supressed a Lot of shit because he knew attachments would make it hard for him to leave (and he Had to leave...)
what im saying.... the song Does fit yeah u opened my eyes
My order of seeing Odysseus;
Epic the Musical
A bit of the Roman Odyssey (I stopped on book 3 and ordered the Greek one but I’ll read the Roman one after because I can’t read it for the first time with him being basically a villain and getting confused on the gods and his name being different)
Circe (I FUCKING HATE IT HE WOULD NEVER IT IS SO BASED OFF ROMAN ODYSSEY)
Decided to not read Song of Achilles because it’s by the same author as Circe and my boy would NEVER be suck a bitch (haven’t read the Odyssey yet so bare with me also haven’t read the back of the book but apparently it’s one of the grandmas favorites so maybe I’ll change my mind)
Greek Odyssey comes tomorrow and I’m so excited to start reading it!!!!
You don't understand, I want Jason and Cass to resent each other.
I want them to walk out of the room as soon as the other steps in.
I want them to scowl every time someone else brings up their name. They try not to, try to disguise it as something else, but they grew up in a family of detectives.
I want Tim and Steph to try patching things up between them by pretending they forgot they invited the other to the hang out and everyone has to play along with the frigid silence. Eventually they stop accepting Tim's and Steph's vague invites.
I want Bruce's heart to ache as he rearranges a patrol schedule because they can't be paired together, not again.
I want guilt to eat at Damian and Duke when they compliment one in front of the other because it feels like stabbing the back of The Sibling Who Gets It.
I want someone to joke exactly once that Cass should have been Jason's Batgirl and that person feels a chill like someone walked over their grave.
I want them to see the worst of themselves reflected in each other.
Cass babysitting younger gen heroes and using her past to terrify them into compliance. Ma'ri doesn't want to eat her vegetables? You see this bullet wound on Cass's shoulder? She got that because she didn't eat enough vegetables. True story. Sin is mad at Dinah and doesn't want to listen to her advice? One time Cass didn't listen to Dinah and guess what happened. Two shots to the stomach. True story. Damian wants to try fighting Shiva? First time Cass tried that she ended up with a dislocated shoulder and broken arm, her life spared on a whim. And that one's actually a true story.
when ignoring how fucked up it is, its a wee bit funny to me that steph was the most ethically responsible robin and then the one that bruce treated the worst.
because dick was like 10 when he became robin, what the fuck were you doing making a ten yo go fight crime? plus he was under bruce's care which is like a massive thing of coercion and power dynamics.
jason had like NEGATIVE reason to be robin, he just needed to have a home and therapy probably
tim didnt want to be robin he just thought that batman needed one. and after getting adopted there is once again the issue of being under your virtual boss's care
and Oh God Damian. it was technically dick's fault this time but like kid did not have a choice in the way he was raised and shouldve gotten like happy fun learning to be a kid times not violent child soldier times
all of that compared to steph who
was already a vigilante when meeting bruce
voluntarily chose to be a vigilante
was not under bruce's care or guardianship and had a trusted adult
was almost a legal adult herself
had some fighting experience
like BRO in terms of ethics steph is The Best option and then she was treated like absolute Garbage. wild shit.
