The First Assignment Was Really An Assessment. Out In The Open Field, The Recruits Could Really Show

The first assignment was really an assessment. Out in the open field, the recruits could really show off their skills. Medix demonstrated his tight maneuverability around traffic cones, Hoist showed his focus and precision with his tow line to move obstacles out of the way, Whirl weaved in and out of tight corners in her copter-mode, and Wedge stacked crates in almost perfect lines and pyramids with quick motion.

Hotshot... Struggled. For all of his boasting about his alt mode being useful for a rescue, he wasn't exactly sure what in the immediate vicinity he could use to demonstrate its usefulness.

That is, until one of the cubes Hoist was lifting came loose from his hook and was sent flying towards a stack Wedge had made. Hotshot gasped as he saw the stack sliding, and preparing to topple on top of Hoist and Medix, and then he grabbed another cube. "DUCK!"

"That's human talk for 'get down!'" Whirl hollered.

The two recruits dropped to the ground and Hotshot kicked the cube he'd grabbed towards the stack. It slid into place on the bottom of the stack. The cubes teetered and wobbled precariously... but finally resettled with the added support.

Hotshot's vents gave a hard puff of air as he relaxed. "You guys okay?"

Medix and Hoist lifted their helms and looked themselves over briefly before giving nods. "We are physically unharmed."

"Whew... Yeah, we're good. Nice shot."

"You mean Hot-Shot!" Whirl cheered with a wide smile, "That was incredible, Hotshot!"

"Pssh. So he can kick cubes around, big deal." Wedge grumbled.

Hotshot felt like the praise Whirl had given him was sucked up and away by Wedge's black hole of dismissal, and his shoulders slumped.

"Actually..." Heatwave came over, hands on his hips. "Quick reflexes are just as important in rescue work as strength or speed. Nice work, Hotshot."

"Thanks... Professor." Hotshot mumbled under his breath.

I apologize, I’d been meaning to finish this in time for mermay, but alas.

I've been waiting to get to this update for so long - it was probably the first scene I conceptualized (or, more accurately, woke up with the image still burned into my brain). As you've probably noticed, I've been heavily inspired by movies such as The Shape of Water and The Little Mermaid. This comic is a love letter to these movies and to the art and fics that have inspired me.

Also, I can finally answer this ask 😂 Merpeople do indeed have regenerative properties, and mixing mer and human blood in live subjects is one thing Kamski has never had the opportunity to try. That and the power of love, of course.

It's been a hot minute since I draw some fluff stuff like this. Since... 2018? In fact, I have never ever drawn fluff about Jojo's, and it was weird, but in a good way. I was melting in cuteness during the process (´▽`ʃ♡ƪ)

There are a few pairings in this series I would die for, and I would love to draw them in a cute and romantic way, too. If you have suggestions, don't ask me about explicit NSFW content, but I don't mind spicing up the scene a little bit... 😉

LGBT+ fact about this drawing: for the background, behind Josuke, I painted the colors of the gay flag (the green and blue one), and behind Okuyasu, I painted the colors of the bisexual flag, and blend them all together, to state my headcanon in this matter.
