An Iranian competitive climber left South Korea on Tuesday after competing at an event in which she climbed without her nation’s mandatory headscarf covering, authorities said. Farsi-language media outside of Iran warned she may have been forced to leave early by Iranian officials and could face arrest back home, which Tehran quickly denied.
The decision by Elnaz Rekabi, a multiple medalist in competitions, to forgo the headscarf, or hijab, came as protests sparked by the Sept. 16 death in custody of a 22-year-old woman have entered a fifth week. Mahsa Amini was detained by the country’s morality police over her clothing.
The demonstrations, drawing school-age children, oil workers and others to the street in over 100 cities, represent the most-serious challenge to Iran’s theocracy since the mass protests surrounding its disputed 2009 presidential election.
A later Instagram post on an account attributed to Rekabi described her not wearing a hijab as “unintentional,” though it wasn’t immediately clear whether she wrote the post or what condition she was in at the time. The Iranian government routinely pressures activists at home and abroad, often airing what rights group describe as coerced confessions on state television.
Statistics from Iran show that over 20,000 girls under the age of 15 were married off from the period of (about?) April/May-ish 2022 to January 2023. Aside from the obviously disturbing fact that this is in effect legalized rape of children, I have to wonder how many of these poor young girls will be subjected to a suffocating environment where they will suffer from all kinds of abuse.
In this post, I discussed the tragic story of Mona Heydari, who is an example of a child bride being married off to an abusive husband. Mona was married at 12 and became a mother at 14. She ran away from her abusive husband a few years later and ultimately was brought back to Iran... only to be beheaded at the age of 17 by her husband (presumably as punishment?). The kicker is that the perpetrators of these "honor killings" often do not receive the severe sentence they deserve (i.e., sentences that are typically handed down to murderers). In fact, in Mona's case, her parents, who had signed HER death sentence at age 12, apparently pardoned her husband and, thus, the already short sentence was further reduced to a mere 8 year prison term.
And you know, I cannot help but worry about how many of these 20,000+ new child brides will meet Mona's tragic fate several years down the line. (I obviously hope this isn't the case.) But then again, this is to be expected of a regime that sexualizes girls before they even reach puberty and clearly regards them as objects.
hey, my kurdish friend wanted to point out that the iranian woman murdered by the police in tehran was a kurd and her kurdish name was jîna emînî. she has mostly been referred to as mahsa amini, the iranian version of her name, in the media & that can ofc still be used to make sure posts about her reach a mainstream audience. however people should make sure to mention her given kurdish name foremost, as well as highlight the fact that she was a kurd in the first place, because that played a part in her facing the violence that she did.
