I forgot to post again yesterday, so it's another two-for-one deal on National Poetry Month! We're continuing our trend of dangerous womanhood with Lucille Clifton's won't you celebrate with me.
Part of shaping your own life is naming yourself. There is power in a name, as Enby-Phoenix explains beautifully in Names.
I just realized that I forgot to post yesterday! I had it planned out and just ... spaced.
Anyway, now that I'm done beating up myself (with e. e. cumming’s help), I'm ready to take on the world. If you're sequestered, this may be a good time to add some color to your life! Yesterday’s poem was I Shall Paint My Nails Red by Carole Satyamurti.
For today's poem, if painting your nails isn't acting out enough, try some Dangerous Coats by Sharon Owens.
I'm having a pretty good day, but I can definitely relate to this poem. It's one of my favorites, and it works very well with yesterday's poem. My daily posting for National Poetry Month continues with a total stranger one black day by e. e. cummings.
My co-isolation sweetie and I ordered dinner from a local restaurant that does very good Middle Eastern food. It was delicious, and I have enough leftover gyro meat and hummus to have it again later in the week! I may even have enough to scramble some with eggs for a third meal. Yummmm.
Let’s take a positivity break!
Reblog and add something you saw or worked on today. It doesn’t have to be big. If you finished a 10,000 word fic, great, but if you remembered to drink some water or watched an awesome sunset, also great.
Life is scary right now, but there’s also still a lot to love, and we could use the reminder.
I'm continuing on with more monster poetry for National Poetry Month. Sometimes you need to drag the terrible voices in your head out so you can really get to know them. my therapist says make friends with your monsters by José Olivarez
National Poetry Month continues! I saw this recently, and it seemed like the perfect companion piece to Shel Silverstein's Invitation. Here is a Monstrous Manifesto by Catherynne M. Valente. Stand up!
It's National Poetry Month! I usually celebrate by posting a poem for each day on the door to my office at work. However, we're closed until at least April 30, so that's not happening this year. Instead, I'm going to share links to the poems with all of you! I have something lined up for every day in April; I just have to keep after myself to actually post on a regular basis.
Here's the poem I start with every year: Shel Silverstein's Invitation. You can hear it read by the author on YouTube, too!
This is a rough time for a lot of people. Please take care of yourselves!

Make sure you have an active library card! If you don’t have a card or haven’t used yours in a few years and your library is still open, get a card or have it renewed. (Check what ID you’ll need before you go.) While you’re in the library, check out that book you’ve been meaning to read, the audiobook or music CD you’ve been meaning to listen to, the movie you want to watch, and whatever else catches your fancy!
You can ask about the library’s online resources while you’re there or look on the website when you get home. Libraries can give you access to a lot of different resources, in addition to what’s listed above. They may have downloadable or streaming e-books, e-audiobooks, music, movies, and TV shows. Your library could give you access to classes on just about any subject, homework help for your kids, car repair guides, programs to help you learn a new language, and lots more. If you go through the library’s website, they probably have information about what you will need to access all of these resources.
If you didn’t get your library card before they had to close to protect people, here are a few free resources you might enjoy.
Jim C. Hines started a Twitter thread where authors can link to free, lighthearted stories (both print and audio): https://twitter.com/jimchines/status/1238486764525948928
The Metropolitan Opera is offering a free streaming opera every night while they are closed: https://www.metopera.org/user-information/nightly-met-opera-streams/
Some great artists are making coloring pages available for anyone to download and print: https://seananmcguire.tumblr.com/post/612756347442937856/catbatart-so-i-saw-a-great-post-by
Scholastic is offering day-by-day projects for kids in Pre-K through grade 6+: https://classroommagazines.scholastic.com/support/learnathome.html
The Library of Congress is crowd-sourcing transcription of historical documents: https://crowd.loc.gov/
If you find that you’re having trouble thinking of things to do in the moment, make a list of stuff you want to try or keep meaning to do when you have time. That craft you bought the supplies for but never started, the time-consuming recipe you want to try, a nagging minor home repair you haven’t gotten around to doing -- put them all on the list! Make sure to get a good mix of fun things and chores. You can either check the list when you get stuck or put ideas on slips of paper to pull from a bowl.
Look for ways to volunteer online or by phone! I linked to the Library of Congress above, but there are tons of other crowd-sourcing initiatives you can do. If you want something closer to home and like talking with people, an organization you belong to may need someone who can call members to make sure they’re ok or just chat with people who are lonely.
If the news is making you stressed, take breaks from it or limit how much time you spend reading/watching it. If people are freaking out on social media, it’s ok to stop following them or not check those accounts as often. Look for people who are posting fun things or links to free stuff you can try. (Check your library’s website for those, too!)

I can’t confirm that the promo code is still good (late-September 2019) because the signature box is currently out of stock. However, the normal price is about $20 for 30 lunch/dinner servings, plus side dishes, breakfasts, and snacks. Full Cart also has slightly larger and smaller options, which were in stock when I looked.
You can see what is included in each box at https://fullcart.org/get-started/. Clicking through to “what’s inside” or “learn more” for each box lets you see the size of the packages included and their ingredients.
Please boost this!

This explains the situation of e-books in libraries much better than I did. It’s incredibly frustrating for librarians, most of whom just want to connect people with books!
It’s been an increasing source of frustration for many library users: waiting weeks, sometimes months to get to the top of the waiting list for a popular eBook or e-Audiobook.
Why does it take so long? After all, it’s not a physical object, it’s a digital file that lives in the “cloud”, why can’t multiple people access it simultaneously instead of only one at a time? Barring that, why doesn’t the library just buy more copies so that the waiting list is shorter? Getting people access to books and information is what libraries are all about, but the struggle for acquiring lendable e-content is very real, and it’s getting harder all the time. Why? What’s the big hairy deal? For that answer, you have to look to the “Big 5” Publishers, who are responsible for close to 80% of trade book sales.
Publishers have been extremely wary about allowing library users virtual access to their books. After all, digital copies of books never wear out or have to be replaced, and are more vulnerable to unauthorized copying (“pirating”). Publshers were afraid if they allowed libraries access to their books digitally, they would be losing money. Individual publishers came up with their own sets of rules for libraries to access their e-content, and they have been tweaked many times since 2006.
In addition, the prices libraries must pay for ebooks and e-audiobooks is very high. Libraries must pay up to 4X the retail price for digital versions of books (which only one user can have access to at a time). Meeting the library patron’s needs for downloadable content is a very expensive enterprise, indeed! Take a look at this comparison of the prices for various versions of the same book:
It becomes easy to see that acquiring ebooks for public use is a very expensive endeavor…

This is one of my pet peeves, and I’m going to loosen its leash a little. The way the Big Five publishers handle e-books “sales” to libraries is depressing. (I put “sales” in quotes because it is frequently more like leasing than buying.) Libraries pay more, have limitations on the number of check-outs (which can only be used sequentially, no matter how many people are waiting to read the book), and/or have limitations on how long they can “own” an e-book. Libraries also have to make their patrons jump through numerous hoops in order to access their e-books.
Want some examples? These are books currently on the New York Times best seller list.
Where the Crawdads Sing -- list price: $26 (hardcover), e-book price on Amazon: $15, e-book price for a library: $55 (for a 24-month lease)
The Art of Racing in the Rain -- list price: $17 (paperback), e-book price on Amazon: $9, e-book price for a library: $17 (for 26 check-outs)
Becoming by Michelle Obama -- list price: $32.50 (hardcover), e-book price on Amazon: $15, e-book price for a library: $55 (for a 24-month lease)
Bitterroots -- list price: $28 (hardcover), e-book price on Amazon: $15, e-book price for a library: $60 (for the earlier of 52 check-outs or 24 months)
Bear in mind, if a library needs more copies of a physical book to fill holds, their vendors have it at a discounted price. If not, the library can go to any bookstore or even to Amazon to get the book. For an e-book, libraries can only buy from a small collection of companies because library e-books need extra restrictions to allow patrons to check them out at all. A library can’t just go to Amazon to get e-books at consumer prices because they wouldn’t be able to loan that copy to people.
As publishers struggle with the continuing shake-up of their business models, and work to find practical approaches to managing digital content in a marketplace overwhelmingly dominated by Amazon, libraries are being portrayed as a problem, not a solution. Libraries agree there’s a problem – but we know it’s not us.
Sometimes, you just have to say, “We hate you,” in a song.
we wrote a song for mitch mcconnell
No, they broke the chalice from the palace. Now the pellet with the poison’s in the flagon with the dragon. The vessel with the pestle has the brew that is true!
(I love this movie. Danny Kaye does amazing slapstick, and some of the dialogue is just incredible!)
- Very good.
I hope no one who follows my feed needs this, but better to have and not need than to need and not have.

If you have shared a post with Spanish advice on what to do if ICE agents come to a person’s home, please check the Spanish advice carefully or have someone who can read Spanish check it for you! Some posts designed to look like ones from the ACLU have bad advice that basically encourages people to give up their rights. I’m disgusted that people would do this deliberately and heart-broken that others are unwittingly sharing this false information.
Please confirm that information you share is correct! (English information in the picture on the right in the initial post from vaspider and Spanish translation by funkylittlegoblin)
Okay, friends, I need some help.
A friend of mine saw a friend who does not speak Spanish circulating these two memes, trying to be helpful. Here’s the problem - the advice in Spanish DOES NOT MATCH the English AT ALL. In Spanish, the people are advised to invite ICE in, be honest and calm, and to instruct all family members to tell the truth. At the end, they are told their cooperation is appreciated. They are not advised of their rights, to request a warrant. The advice amounts to giving themselves up.
If you look closely at the bottom, you’ll see that the English version is from the ACLU. The Spanish version says “ALCU”.
Be aware of the information you share - it may not be helpful!
THAT SAID, the help I request is this:
I do not speak enough Spanish to translate the above into Spanish. I would like to give her the Spanish translation of this message to add to her post. (And this one.)
Help?
I found this at Goodwill. It’s a little gaudier than I usually like, but I couldn’t resist. Now that I have it set up, I love it! (It’s rather difficult to take a picture of a lamp in place. I mean, it’s there because I want light there, but turning on the lamp itself put in way too much glare.)

I would love to see a Wild West version of the Scottish play! That sounds like it could work extremely well.

This is incredibly frightening. In addition to the definition of domestic violence, the definitions of stalking (old vs. new) and sexual assault (old vs. new) were changed between December 2017 and April 2018.
Without fanfare or even notice, the Department of Justice’s Office on Violence Against Women made significant changes to its definition of domestic violence in April. The Obama-era definition was expansive, vetted by experts including the National Center for Victims of Crime and the National Domestic Violence Hotline. The Trump administration’s definition is substantially more limited and less informed, effectively denying the experiences of victims of abuse by attempting to cast domestic violence as an exclusively criminal concern.
The previous definition included critical components of the phenomenon that experts recognize as domestic abuse—a pattern of deliberate behavior, the dynamics of power and control, and behaviors that encompass physical or sexual violence as well as forms of emotional, economic, or psychological abuse. But in the Trump Justice Department, only harms that constitute a felony or misdemeanor crime may be called domestic violence. So, for example, a woman whose partner isolates her from her family and friends, monitors her every move, belittles and berates her, or denies her access to money to support herself and her children is not a victim of domestic violence in the eyes of Trump’s Department of Justice. This makes no sense for an office charged with funding and implementing solutions to the problem of domestic violence rather than merely prosecuting individual abusers

I think Danny Devito would be great as the voice of Spider-Ham though!
Husband and I have a fun game called “Against Type” where we speculate on either Improbable Roles for an actor or Improbable Actors for a role. The results frequently make for better movies than the original casting. Some of the best combinations so far:
Betty White as James Bond (With Daniel Craig as her Bond Girl)
Danny Devito as Spiderman
Arnold Schwaznegger as Any Teletubbie
Julie Andrews as Batman
Gilbert Gottfried as The Phantom Of The Opera
Lucy Liu as freakin’ anybody. Seriously, any role I’ve tried to imagine her in I can only imagine her fucking killing it. Captain America. Mary Poppins. Hannibal Lecter. Doc Brown. Elizabeth Bennet. Darth Vader. She’d be awesome.
Samuel L. Jackson as Dolores Umbridge
Taika Watiti and Lin Manuel Miranda as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson (the musical)
Some notes from the game:
It’s harder to do this with actresses than actors because they tend to be more versatile.
Adding “The Musical” or “Directed by Mel Brooks” to any serious movies improves it by 500%
Christopher Walken is equally awesome/terrible at anything you put him in
