Was super inspired by As above, so below and it’s cover art to paint something Bionicle again. Both to recapture that mystery in the setting and as a thank you to Essenger & Cryoshell for delivering such an awesome song. They didn’t have to go that hard, but they did and it turned out amazing!
Do you ever hear something so hypocritical, the world stops working for one long moment of bafflement?
I’m sorry, but Tarn, the guy who melts people alive and leads a torture club and ripped a guy’s head off over a dog to be cool, asking someone else to be reasonable is amazing
Hello and happy Bionicle Day! It's been too long since I posted a Matoric translation of some kind, so let's change that. Below you'll find an up-to-date translation of the "Legend of Mata Nui", as represented in the Mask of Light film.
A more specific reason for posting this today is the fact that musician and Bionicle fan Markle (@MarkleSnoppy on Twitter, @marklesmusic on YouTube) has produced a beautiful choral arrangement of part of this translation, set to an original musical score. You can catch the song during the Bionicle Day 2024 broadcast (Day 1), and it will also be available on Markle's YouTube channel (edit: check it out here!).
Click here for a document version of the translation, which also includes a full gloss and partial pronunciation guide.
Matoric Version:
Ro'o kai, te amaja boa-nikya o ideya anga.
Ivaha vahai, te Mata Nui ivo ya ohanu ya-oza Matoran ima nu.
Ro okhu maikhu no nu, te Mata Nui oza taka ya nu haita kai te Kaita Maita Vaita no.

Heara'o mata ya ko nu ru. Haua ta ro ai Mata Nui te Makuta te upura yai. Makuta iza khu ya te olua ta Mata Nui ka usura a yai nu ta.

English Version:
Gathered friends, listen again to our Legend of the BIONICLE.
In the time before time, the Great Spirit descended from the heavens, carrying we, the ones called the Matoran, to this paradise.
We were separate and without purpose, so the Great Spirit illuminated us with the three virtues: Unity, Duty, and Destiny.
We embraced these gifts, and in gratitude, we named our island home Mata Nui, after the Great Spirit himself.
But our happiness was not to last, for Mata Nui's brother, the Makuta, was jealous of these honors and betrayed him, casting a spell over Mata Nui, who fell into a deep slumber.
The Makuta was free to unleash his shadows . . . and unleash them, he did . . .

The Matoran Language (Matoric) is a constructed language (“conlang”) set within the universe and lore of BIONICLE (a LEGO property). It is the language of the biomechanical species called Matoran, and it is also used as a lingua franca amongst many of the biomechanical inhabitants of the artificially-constructed Matoran Universe.
If you would like to learn more about Matoric, further documentation can be found in these posts: The Matoran Language [2021] and An Etymological Dictionary of Matoric, Third Edition.
The Matoran Language Resources page of this blog also contains a wealth of additional content and archival material.
“Sketches based on depictions found in one of the first instances of the Witnesses’ Art, showcasing equally primordial times. Those engravings depict brutal battles fought by powerful warriors, amongst themselves as well as against mighty beasts that bear a resemblance to Rahi. Though some of those warriors seem to wear coverings that share likeness to Kanohi masks, others appear to possess exposed heads with jawbone structure, and instead choose to adorn themselves with particular markings on their foreheads. There are many mysteries to the meaning of those engravings and the nature of the beings depicted on them. Currently, the only lead lies in the presence of waters possessing transformative properties, something that is consistent with the power of the mystical Silver..”
810NICLE DAY
It's bionicle day, so here's some of the toa I drew as part of a commisioned set sometime last year. Looking back at when I was making these, I had thought that it was when I was stll refining the biomechanical elements of my style, but I've also found things from that time that were further down the line in detail. I still need to get to Onua and Pohatu, but haven't quite had the time to just sit down and draw a bunch of pieces for a little while - plus I feel nervous about if whether I'd manage to capture them in a comparable amount of detail haha, don't want any of them to stand out in an unusual way
Httyd book doodle dump :]
