Or as I’ve been calling her up until now- Rat Mari! Now to tell you the truth Rat Mari/Ziemia took me AGES to properly figure out and when I was first getting started with Marzenie I had no idea what to do about Mari- then I had the rot metaphor idea and decided “rats in the shape of a person is pretty horrible I could do that!”… thus, Mari shaped rat pile and some wooden limbs in there too for vague symbolism reasons? Which. What I mean by that is that I’m drawing a similarity between her and Sol

The whole thing with Sol is the idea of perfection, a person is not capable of perfection and so he must be a doll, must be wood and light and no more- Mari was once perfect too, but her idea is tainted and gone and all that remains is rot. Do you see what I’m saying here? I’m not sure honestly I’ve been brainfogged as hell lately and started this drawing two days ago only to finish it NOW, and to be totally honest the design isn’t everything I wanted from it… but it dawned on me sometime lately that what I do want would be very tedious to draw

I cannot physically draw enough rats for me to be happy with so I compromised with not that many rats- and they aren’t very good rats either I’m not that great with animals … anyhow! Why Ziemia? Well. I think I’ve brought it up before but the in-world explanation for this character is that she was once a nature goddess, like how Sol is a god of the sun- but she was tainted by something terrible and consumed by pests, so Ziemia (in my rudimentary understanding of the polish language thanks to imperfect software because I don’t actually know polish and am doing my best to choose correct translations) is a word that means Earth. There were alternate translations and other words I could’ve used, but I picked Ziemia because it’s 1: a relatively simple word that matches the other ones I’ve used and 2: sounds enough like a name that I find it easy to call a character that and 3: is relatively easy to pronounce for … what I imagine to be my mostly English speaking audience? What five of you there are- other then @/birdzman ! Who I think might actually be polish? Not sure but shout out to you if you’re reading this!! Not fully sure if I’m right but if so then uhhh I apologize for being a dumb little American because I doubt I’m doing these translations right, anyhow!

Rat Mari/Ziemia isn’t just accociated with rats, I also want her to have themes of decay and other scavenger animals such as maggots or worms, the focus on rats is to do with Marzenie’s setting, I guess the idea is that Rats invade homes in winter to survive, whereas bugs mostly die off in winter regardless of available human homes to inhabit, so rats are one of the only pest animals which persist through the snow, which is why they might appear in some places outside Ziemia’s tree area, whilst other associated creatures would be unique to that area

Last but not least of my statements on this character, Ziemia does not represent the grief of Mari’s death, but rather the tangible brutality of it, how death feels in the eyes of a child, the inherent horror of a corpse, of knowing a person was once alive is no longer so, the horror of feeling their body stiff and cold in your arms, arms that once held you … this is what the rot theme comes from, one of Basil’s frequent hallucinations is of her body, decaying on the rope, decaying where he left her.

Cough. YAY!!!!!

OWL UPON YE

Ok so this is Alter Boy’s actual appearance, that other one is just how he’s usually presented, I’ve mentioned before how he’s a very antagonistic character towards Marze despite not directly attacking him, but that’s only half true- Alter boy DOES attack Marze but only in very specific situations

It has to do with my idea of Marzenie having multiple routes (game-like talk again), in my head this fight is part of the good ending route

(which can be taken as a metaphor for a lot of things but the interpretation I’m going with is that Basil has to learn to confront his paranoia’s around others, drawing on how Alter Boy is a very inaccurate representation of Kel based more on Basil’s inner anxieties and bitterness then who Kel actually is, to confront him is to push aside this warped perspective and begin to trust that others aren’t out to get him)

Anyhow- I had the idea for Alter Boy spinning his head around pretty early on but it was combined with several other scattered ideas that hadn’t been decided upon- so certain things I’ve said have since become inaccurate, as to why he’s green? Well believe or not but that’s a very very silly nod to him and reflection being related, mirrors are technically green! Look it up it’s very interesting

Also slight tinges of color in Marzenie look cool to me. There’s that too

That’s about all I have to say in regards to this, Alter boy being a weird owl creature isn’t super relevant- it’s one of those rule of cool moments where I disregard symbolism because I thought an idea I had was scary/visually cool enough to use anyway, I just had it in my head that if Marzenie were a game it would be MORTIFYING if his overworld sprite suddenly spun its head around to lead into the fight- even if I can’t execute this it’s still a very fun idea to me, and I’ve thought about using it for an animation later on

Last thing: His face gave me a lot of trouble so here’s a little demo of all the ones I went through trying to get it right ⬇️

I don't have much too say bcoz I'm running late somwhere sadly!!

After much wait, the Weaponsmith!!!

So for the AU’s purposes this is Charlene- she was one of the first ideas I came up with! Something about giving her a sword helmet just stuck with me, as you may guess she’s the “weapon shop” character to go with Maverick being the item shop (and yes by the way I did put them in the same pose. It looks good)

Anyhow, the flower nestled in her chainmail is Goldenrod! Elaboration below ⬇️

This is goldenrod, goldenrod was my pick for Charlene because it can simultaneously represent both encouragement and caution, I use this as a shorthand for “make good choices” which is the sort of character I see Charlene has, she’s responsible in perhaps the most burdensome sense

Charlene is not only the one looking out for the hooligans, but as the youngest of her siblings is left to take care of their aging mother while her brother just sits in his room all day gaming instead of doing anything for either of them (this man is fully capable of getting off his ass to get his mom’s medication from the pharmacy but simply chooses not to) and her other siblings have all moved away and gone about their own lives

Charlene as a character is depicted as many things she doesn’t seem to want to be, responsible, quiet, imposing- we know she probably doesn’t like how she’s perceived because she makes an effort to dress in a cutesy sort of way, she isn’t trying to be this intimidating person, it’s just her build is all, and in addition to the idea of being left responsible for other peoples duty’s when she’s still just a teenager, the contrast in the first place is why I like goldenrod as her flower

Unfortunately Basil has a hard time keeping this reality in his mind, he feels bad for it but Charlene scares him, he gets really nervous around her even though she’s never said anything bad about or towards him- so in his mind Charlene manifests as someone scary but harmless, helpful even

(Sidenote, I like to headcanon that other then Aubrey Basil actually knows Charlene the best and has known her longest, they Arendt exactly friends? But their mom/grandma respectively were so they spent time together as kids, it’s that really quiet sort of acquaintance you have with the kid your parent sticks you with and tells you to be friends with- they don’t consider each other friends exactly, they just know each other)

Also I tend to headcanon Charlene as transfem, that has nothing to do with anything that’s just a thought I have about her

Okay sure!

So cannibalism psychologically occurs in one of three scenarios

Survivalist cannibalism

Narcissistic cannibalism

Psychosis triggered cannibalism

The first two are the most common, Survivalist cannibalism is merely a result of situational desperation although interestingly it’s been found that people who engaged in it showed far less apprehension to do it again and less disgust then the average person, which in my opinion implies the aversion humans have towards Cannibalism is social rather then innate, the most famous example of this was the Donner party, a group of American settlers who became stranded in the snow on their way west and were forced to eat their dead until rescue

Narcissistic cannibal’s are something we’re all familiar with but probably don’t realize it, the vast majority of cannibalistic murderers are this type, the most famous example of this is of course Jeffery Dahmer, what most people don’t understand about this case and the cases of most other cannibal serial killers is that the main focus of their crimes usually isn’t the cannibalism itself but rather other acts towards their victims and the killing itself, that’s why these crimes are often done in tandem to sexual ones as the killer in question’s reasoning is centered around power dynamics; their motivation rests within the idea that eating something is the ultimate way to be above it, a sort of food-chain complex

Last but not least there’s Cannibalistic ideation as a symptom of psychosis or other schizoaffective disorders, psychosis is what most people refer to when they talk about “going insane”, it’s a state any particular disturbed person can fall into which causes hallucinations and delusions, the desire to eat human flesh as a symptom while uncommon is not unheard of- in fact there’s several sub-disorders that have been named to define more specific and repeated circumstances

“Windigo psychosis” is one of these specific disorders which has only been observed within Native American communities, it’s thought that cultural context can affect how a persons psychosis manifests, and for Natives of North America within Algonquin speaking regions this particular form of it can occur which includes some amount of cannibalistic ideation as its symptom

(although I’d like to note that in cases of psychosis regardless of circumstances its rather uncommon for the person in question to act upon the thought, it’s a pervasive idea that schizophrenic or psychotic individuals are dangerous due to the frequent violent thoughts which can occur for these individuals, but it must be said that violent crimes are not committed by these people as often as some think, and self harm is far more common in these situations then the harm of others)

With that disclaimer out of the way! Let’s talk about pseudo-cannibalism! That’s not a real term that’s just what I call it, but it’s when a person only consumes a small, specific part of another human or prepares them in a very specific way, these category also includes ritualistic cannibalism and cannibalism as a death rite

Some interesting examples of this include Egyptian mummy candy! The creation of this substance entails the regular mummification process in which a dead body has its organs removed before being sewn back up, but rather then being wrapped in cloth the sarcophagus is filled with honey and left for a long time, in addition the person in question also consumed honey before death to really just be full of honey, this process is referred to as mellification and it’s thought that the substance produced was used as medicine once hardened, although I must stress that mellification is a theory and has not been confirmed to have actually happened in ancient Egypt by archaeologists, still it’s extremely interesting and I wanted to talk about it even if it hasn’t been confirmed as real

Although you know what kind of mummy eating actually did happen? Mummy parties! In Victorian England and America mummies we’re all the rage, people would buy them to keep in their house or host mummy parties which on occasion entailed crushing up bits of the mummy into powder and eating or SNORTING it! Sometimes the powder was even used as paint by combining it with sunflower oil- these practices are unfortunately why we don’t have many mummies anymore

As for cannibalism as a death rite, the practice has been observed in places like Brazil and Peru, and while the practice is essentially retired in the modern day there’s plenty of places that did so in the past

Okay that’s about all I’ve got off the top of my head, I encourage looking into into it yourself though! There’s many interesting things to be learned, additionally I’m not sure how accurate all of my information is, cannibalism is an obscure topic so sometimes stuff gets spread that isn’t true, like mellification and how we aren’t sure if it ever actually happened or not!
