Fun Fact: opossums have so low of a body temperature that rabies can't survive in its body. Don't worry, you probably just spooked it into playing dead
Today I sat in unbeknownst close proximity to an opossum that was either afflicted with rabies, or that I had frightened nearly to death.
I'm assuming the latter because it literally looked dead — eyes open, not breathing, slightly bloated — and only moved when I left the area. As I am aware this behavior is an entirely involuntary state of shock, no wonder it walked a little... er, wobbly, when it finally recovered.
Still, I called as many wildlife hotlines as I could, given I've rarely seen an opossum active diurnally, and I'm hoping for the best for the critter I likely scared into catatonia.
