MOVIE RANT BELOW YOU CAN IGNORE ME LOL JUST IN MY FEELS OK

I just watched Encanto yesterday by the way and as a Colombian I love what they did with this movie. There are small details that you wouldn’t notice if you weren’t familiar with the culture but I just had to make this appreciation post:

The clothing they wear is very typical of the clothing worn in the villages of the mountains down to the stitching! It was all so vibrant and beautiful! And the fact that they stitched the main characters name onto her skirt was such a great detail! Even the little bag that she was carrying is exactly like the bags that are crafted there - my grandpa would buy them as gifts for me and my sister and they are always so beautiful - bright colors and covered in flowers!

Also the architecture of the houses is JUST LIKE my great grandparents village!! My mom and grandma watched the movie with me also and were telling me about how they identified with this story so well. Personal note but my great grandparents actually had to flee their village on horseback with their two babies just like in the movie because they were threatened by assassins (wild I know). So my mom was like “bruh that abuela is MY ABUELA”

When it comes to the appearances, I’m so glad that they made the cast a mix of skin tones, hair types, overall a mix of appearances - because that is totally what we are like! The abuela looks just like my grandma - fairer skin, relatively straightish hair. Meanwhile I’d say I look a lot more like the main character - medium tone skin with curly hair but the curls aren’t tight. And my sister turned out like the MC’s cousin Camilo, similar skin color but MUCH tighter curls. I saw so many of my family and friends in those characters I could go on about this all day!

Also, THE FOOD! Don’t get me started on the food! There are certain foods that are ‘typically’ served in colombian restaurants here in America that are not actually what we eat back in Colombia. I appreciate that they actually used OUR food in this movie. Like the arepas for example. Here in america usually the restaurants serve the corn arepas with cheese on top. I’ve never been to a restaurant that serves arepas the way we actually make them - with the cheese already in the corn mixture. But in the movie they were EXACTLY how we make them I wanted to cry ok. And the buñelos looked so good ffs the breakfast they had together after the engagement party was literally the breakfast my grandma would make for me as a kid like 😭

And the music was so very obviously inspired by not just salsa (aka generic carribean Spanish music) but vallenato (a genre of music that is almost exclusively Colombian) and other genres of music, it was overall very inspired by everything we listen to not just the generic salsa you hear at parties

PLUS the casual use of Spanish pet names like “mija” and “abuela” had me cheesing okay

ALSO WHEN MIRABELS FATHER SAID MIERCOLES I WAS DYING AKDHSKDJSKD (it’s a PG way to say shit in Spanish jajaja)

Actually everything about her dad was precious also when he played the intro chords to La Rebelíon I was ACTUALLY CRYING OF LAUGHTER like whoever chose the music for this KNOWS COLOMBIANS SO WELL LIKE????? If you aren’t familiar with Joe Arroyo you wouldn’t have understood why her dad was playing those chords but like - that is literally the one song that will make ANYONE stand up and dance so when Abuela was like “let’s get back to dancing” and Mirabels dad started playing the intro chords to that song on the piano it was so funny ok

one of the reasons i love wednesday/enid so much is how much enid respects wednesday’s boundaries without her having to say much (or more accurately, nothing at all)

we see this they first time they meet, when enid accepts that wednesday isn’t a hugger. she doesn’t push wednesday or try to change this fact (something we see the boys do when they try to make wednesday do something she isn’t interested in/not ready for)

and although enid does try to hug wednesday later in the episode, she does nothing more than hold her arms out and step forward. she repeats her earlier statements and leaves wednesday be

this is also after their balcony talk, where enid shares about her vulnerabilities with not being able to wolf out, and wednesday shares in return. they’ve gone from being at each other throats (hyperbole) to enid wishing wednesday safe travels. enid also recognizes how wednesday sharing, in a attempt to comfort her, is her being vulnerable as well, and without prompting she promises not to tell anyone

during the window shots, we can see how enid keeps her distance from the divide between their sides, and it is wednesday who steps closer to enid, even if it just a small bit

in episode eight, as they are packing wednesday’s things and enid goes to try and hug her one last time, when wednesday retreats, enid takes a step back as well. (wednesday also steps closer when enid moves away)

the final moment that solidifies that when it comes to bridging the distance between them, although enid tries more often, it is wednesday who fully closes that cap. in the hig, wednesday doesn’t just return the hug, she pulls enid back in and gets as close to enid as she can (burying her face in enid’s shoulder, something enid doesn’t really do). enid is assuring herself wednesday is safe. wednesday is seeking comfort. she closes her eyes and moves her hand against enid’s back

there are other small, and some may say insignificant moments (like in episode two when enid jokes that wednesday can just ‘glare uncomfortably’), but one moment that did stick out to me was when enid returns to their room

it’s obvious that enid missed wednesday (and vice versa) but she is willing to put in the boundaries wednesday had previously set. she wants to be closer to wednesday but not to the point where wednesday is uncomfortable, and she’s willing to wait for wednesday to become comfortable on her own timeline

the point im trying to make through all my incessant (and probably incomprehensible, given i just spat this out) ramblings, is that ENID RESPECTS WEDNESDAY’S BOUNDARIES in a way other characters don’t seem to

now that sag-aftra has joined the strike, the increase in cold-ass takes has skyrocketed about “why should we support millionaires whining about not making money??”. like my man. my guy. the actors well-paid enough to have name recognition are striking to protect their colleagues. that very name recognition is what the average person is going to notice. they probably won’t care that ‘woman who plays every dead body in police procedurals’ is striking, but someone like emily blunt? that’ll get their attention. besides, would you rather they just… not support their colleagues? because at this point you’re basically saying you’d prefer if they scab than support their colleagues who can’t make a living wage despite both groups being talented professionals who deserve respect. name recognition is a powerful tool for sag-aftra and i hope they wield it with scalpel-like precision against the execs

anyway the actual point of fandom is to inspire each other. reading each other's fics and admiring each other's art and saying wow i love this and i feel something and i want to invoke this in other people, i want to write a sentence that feels like a meteor shower, i want to paint a kiss with such tenderness it makes you ache, i want to create something that someone else somewhere will see it and think oh, i need to do that too, right now. i am embracing being a corny cunt on main to say inspiring each other is one of the things humanity is best at and one of the things fandom is built for and i think that's beautiful
