Harry was quite bored; they felt like they’d sketched everything in town and there wasn’t much that was new. They constantly walked around town hoping to find something new, something that could be their next art piece they could work on before they went crazy and too deep into their head.
This was their first time walking past the plant shop when a plant showing in the window caught their eye. It was beautiful – unique, something Harry definitely needed. They had a lot of ideas right when they saw it and they needed a closer look. Taking a step in the store they looked around.
“Hi um, I saw a plant in the window and I was wondering if I could get a closer look?”
⊱ ────── {⋆⌘⋆} ────── ⊰
The person who had walked in was unfamiliar. Then again, most people in this town fell into that category for Sam. That didn’t matter much to him; he loved getting to know people, and could make friends with anybody if he really set his mind to it. His demeanor was reflected in the vibrancy of the shop interior. Dozens of plant species were out on display across the various shelves.
“’Course you can!” he nodded, gesturing off to the right where a few more of the white flowering plants sat on a shelf. With a proud look on his face, he added, “There's a few more over there if you’re interested. Just put those out today. They’re a real favorite of mine.”

Due to everything that had just taken place, Zelda was a little dizzy. And that was understandable. So many different faces, smells and voices. It would overwhelm just about anyone. Especially when you are not prepared. Meeting fans was something she loved but she would much rather have a meet up planned than to be rushed and cornered like this. Their heart was beating fast in their chest but the more they let the stranger guide them away from the crowd, the more safe she started to feel.
Blinking a couple of times, Zelda looked at him and then cleared her throat. “I am not so sure. I feel a little lightheaded” they admitted and then cleared their throat. “Ah that? Those were my fans. I work as a model”

There was something strangely familiar, being in their presence. It wasn't that Samwise thought knew her specifically, but looking at her gave that strange sort of tug in his chest— the one which always came about when a blurred memory of someone was dancing at the edge of his mind and wouldn't come into focus. They reminded him of someone he had forgotten. What an odd feeling.
This only caused the concern he had to grow. You could say what you would about Sam, but his heart was much bigger than most.
“Ah, well you’ll have to forgive me. I don't really keep up with that sort— sorry, that's not important. You’re light headed? Do you need to sit down, or the café’s just up the street, we could get you some water or somethin’.”

As much as Laurie loved dogs- and how much they loved her back- she couldn’t risk having one. If she didn’t get out of the house before sunset and had to turn in the middle of her living room… Well, they weren’t going to have any potential pet see the giant, hulking wolf as a threat. Laurie had near full control of herself when in their other form but when attacked they could get just a little feral.
No, a plant was a far better option.
Doing research beforehand had been dizzying. Lists of “10 Most Poisonous Plants for Pets” and “Keep These 5 Plants Away from Dogs” had made their head spin. Laurie had almost abandoned the whole endeavor, before deciding to actually ask the people at the nursery. They should know.
Standing in the middle of the nursery now, hands clasped in front of her and eyes tracking any one of the plants that could potentially poison her, made her reconsider that earlier resolve. Pollen would be her biggest issue but wasn’t that how plants grew? Or spores? They didn’t know, there hadn’t been a need to pay attention in biology when her very existence broke the rules of science.
“Hi, um, I need something that’s not poisonous,” Laurie paused. Would just standing in the nursery effect them? “For dogs. And preferably something without pollen so… I guess it can’t flower?”

From the moment he focused on her, Sam could tell she was on edge. He didn’t know why, and he had no business inquiring, but he decided it would be his goal to make sure that they were exceedingly more comfortable by the end of this. Nodding and rolling up his sleeves, he offered a kind smile.
“First time buying a houseplant then?” he asked, a lightness to his voice. He could tell by the line of queries that this was unfamiliar territory, but this was his job, after all, and he was more than happy to be of guidance. “Right, I think we can figure something out for you. There are actually many flowering plants with little to no pollen at all, but many flowers can be difficult to maintain, especially in these parts, and it wouldn’t do you well to get discouraged right out of the gate. Finding something dog-friendly shan’t be a problem neither.”
From there, Samwise’s mind began to reel as he began to narrow down the options. A mental list was already coming together, now just to slim it down. “How often are you home? You have a lot of spare time in your day?”

Don’t get him wrong, Samwise loved his job. There were few things that he could think of that would suit him better. The satisfaction of creating something great and lively from a tiny seed was immense. It brought him back to better times— back to the days of curiously watching his father work on the kitchen table when he was a lad.
Of course, there were some days where his job was exhausting. Whether it be from problem customers, or a ruined tray of products, or an experiment ending in failure (as it had been today).
So, Sam did what he always did when he had a long day; he went to the local pub. The White Rabbit was a nice place to unwind. It was no Green Dragon, or even Golden Perch, but it was the closest he would be able to get. Making his way up to the bar, he sat down with a sigh. With a tired smile, he met the eyes of the nearest bartender, “Evening to you.”

Zelda knew the risks when they decided to pursue modeling. They knew that their life would change and that privacy no longer would exist in their world. It was all rather tragic. But it had gotten worse and worse by each passing day. In the beginning of living here things had been pretty calm due to Zelda just starting off this career path. But now that they had lived here for a while and have made a name for herself, things had quickly changed. Some days they could go to the store and not be surrounded. But there were days, like this one for instance, when they didn’t really have a choice in the matter.
It started with maybe ten people and then it escalated into thirty. Truth be told, Zelda had lost count and now it felt like they were drowning out at sea. No one seemed to care however. They must think; it’s her own fault. She is a celebrity, she knew what she signed up for.
It was close minded and it was cruel. No one deserved to lose their humanity just because of the job they have. And being a model shouldn’t really be that big of a deal but guess they were wrong. They didn’t want to change career path, of course not. But maybe they should listen to their boss about getting security. Back home in Hyrule, they had been isolated from the rest of the world. But here? Here she could be free. And she didn’t want to lose that. So they would just have to come up with a deal.
They had about given up when it came to getting help when they heard someone speak up. Their eyes widened when they saw a kind looking man hold out his hand to them. Taking it without hesitation, they let out a sigh of relief.
⊱ ────── {⋆⌘⋆} ────── ⊰
Pulling on the hand clasped to his, Sam managed to tug the stranger through the crowd. He kept her close until they were a ways away from the mess of people. He had vaguely remembered doing something similar with someone close to him before, but the specifics of memory felt intangible (as many of them did these days), so he gave up on the train of thought for the time being.
When it was safe, Sam let go of her hand. He looked at her, concern etched into his brow. “You alright, miss? Seemed like quite the fuss. What’s that all about, if you don’t mind me asking?”

TRYING TO MAKE WOLFSBANE POTION WHEN HE WAS ONLY EVER AVERAGE AT POTIONS WAS DANGEROUS. it was stupid and reckless, and really what he had to expect from himself for a prank but not for something that could do himself some good. Remus was self aware about his self deprecation and self sabotage that way. He had ways to test the potion before he took it, so he didn’t accidentally poison himself (which was the result if you did it at all wrong). He could ask around, see if there were any potions masters in town … maybe Penny or her friend Basilton. He at least trusted them with his secret.
BUT FIRST, HE HAD TO GET A HOLD OF THE INGREDIENTS. they were expensive in the wizarding world, and he was hoping it wouldn’t be the case here. But even if it was, at least there was more community support and the older couple he rented a grandparents’ suite from would be understanding if rent was late a bit. He clutched the list in his hands as he ducked into the nursery … only to be completely overwhelmed.
HE’D NEVER BEEN THE KIND TO INDENTIFY PLANTS ON THE SPOT, and all the greenery and smells felt like a lot. So, he headed to the nearest worker and cleared his throat. ❝ Sorry to be a bother, I was just hoping you might be able to direct me to some plants I want to purchase. ❞ In truth, he wasn’t even sure how many of these plants solely existed in the wizarding world, or if they were here. How he was going to get powdered dragon claw was something to tackle at another time.

Nearly every week at work brought Sam an interesting encounter. People of all sorts would come through, as with most shops, yet even more interesting than the people were their intentions for being there. Many were there solely for their interest in house plants or gardening. Others would make their way in to purchase something for their friend or partner. Some would come in with questions on this, or that, or the other thing. But there were the select few that came in for something more.
He never questioned them when they did. He had learned a long time ago not to stick his nose into places it didn’t belong. Sam had been there so long, he had almost entirely stopped questioning it. He had even gone out of his way to start growing some of the more commonly sought after otherly plants. One such plant was one he knew well. Kingsfoil, a beautiful little thing that had served him well many times. He had been in the midst of documenting their most recent heights when someone had caught his attention.
“Oh, not a bother at all,” he set the notebook and pen down on the nearest shelf, and turned to face him. “What can I help you with?”

Ahsoka had fallen in love with the way Earth did holidays, they felt so soft and warm to ward off the winter cold. She both loved and hated the snow and the cold, for what she felt was good reason. The reality, though, was that she hadn’t particularly allowed herself to get close to anyone and it made it a lonely time of year as well.
Distracted, she walked through town for her break from the inn, knowing it was important she let herself walk away from time to time. But, even distracted, she had a habit of paying attention to the people around her. Hearing the rip, her eyebrow arched as she looked to the source. She followed that instinct she always had that said go help and immediately knelt to help him gather up the few stragglers.
“Here you go,” she mused, holding onto the things she’d picked up. “I have a spare bag, one of the reusable ones,” she offered, reaching into her bag and pulling it out, tucking his things into it before holding it out. “Don’t want you to lose anything,” she said gently, a soft smile on her face.
⊱ ────── {⋆⌘⋆} ────── ⊰
It took a moment to register the woman’s words as he had been wrangling in the items that had rolled. Samwise, obviously frazzled, needed a second to find his voice again, “Oh, thank you very much.“
He was grinning now, and, taking the bag from her, Sam put the items he had picked up into it. A quick glance over the contents told him that everything had been retrieved, aside from… aha! He reached over to grab the missing bag of cinnamon, and dropped it in. Standing, he offered a hand to help her up.
“I really appreciate the hand. I don’t think we’ve met! Sam Gamgee, at your service.” The whole non-Middle-Earth greeting thing was still slightly confusing to him, but it's the thought that counts. Right?

MERLIN PUSHED ONE MORE BOUT OF ENERGY INTO THE BUSHES BEFORE HE STOOD. he wiped his hands off on his pants, offering a smile to the other. ❝ Please, just Merlin. I see my reputation or name has proceeded me. ❞ It didn’t bother him when people just knew his name. In Camelot it would’ve been cause of worry, especially when he was supposed to be keeping a low profile. But here, he was one of the few doctors working in memory recovery and he spent much time around town.
❝ I’M NOT SURE IF IT’S BRAVE OR STUPID TO NOT FEEL FRIGHTENED. perhaps a bit of both. My - my old friend was the same way often. He never did listen to my warnings. ❞ It still ached to think about Arthur, but with Gwen it was getting better. Even now, his words were laddened with sorrow, but something closer to nostalgia. ❝ Oh me? I’m just checking on some of the plants. Most of them can flourish on their own, but I like swinging by and making sure they’re doing okay. Some of the animals as well. ❞
⊱ ────── {⋆⌘⋆} ────── ⊰
Studying the bushes, Sam ran over the possible reasoning for the other’s interest in them, but the thought was dispelled when Merlin spoke. “Oh, yes, just a bit mis- Merlin. I may be newer round these parts, but I chat with customers quite often.” This was true enough. There was much you could find out by being kind and striking up the odd conversation; he had learned that early into his old job as mayor in the Shire.
Chuckling at the comment, Samwise shook his head a bit, “I used to be friends with a few people like that, myself.” Much more than friends with one of them, but Sam left that bit out. Thinking of Frodo made him incredibly homesick, and he didn’t feel like being questioned about it.
“That's quite nice of you. I like checking out the greenery as well. I’ll come out every so often to check on things, and familiarize myself with the native species, so I can– sorry. I tend to get a bit swept up in that sort of talk. It's my thing, as some would say.” He cleared his throat, mind going back to the previous comment, “Should I be frightened of that Grey Mare? I didn’t think it did anything too nasty, but it's easy to be mistaken in unfamiliar places.”

Jack had gotten bored with the party at the community center and wandered outside. It was bad enough that he was stuck in one place, but most of the townspeople did not share his sense of humor–Loki notwithstanding, but he already made enough of a nuisance of himself to them that he wasn’t going to go knocking on their window in the dead of night demanding entertainment. Well, not yet, anyway. He wasn’t quite that desperate.
There had been no trace of his staff so he was still earthbound, but that had never stopped Jack. He’d climbed onto the roof of the community center, bare feet dangling over the edge. He was stealthily throwing snowballs at people leaving the party, the drunker the better. He was careful about it, and no one had yet figured out where they were coming from.
Until now. It gave him a small jolt of surprise to realize someone was looking at him. Everyone could see him here, and for as much as Jack had wanted that before, he sometimes found it off-putting now. So much easier to cause mischief when he was invisible. He grinned back, unrepentant, and lifted his hand in a little salute of acknowledgment.

Never one to turn down the opportunity to enjoy a good party, Samwise Gamgee was happy to be in attendance at the community center. He was chatty at heart, and these sorts of events enabled him to talk to as many people as he pleased. Though, despite his enjoyment, he did have a job to get to in the morning. Leaving early, was the best course of action.
He had barely gotten ten steps out the door when he had nearly toppled over. Shaking snow from his hair, and brushing it from the sleeve of his arm, he looked around for the source. It hadn't taken him long to find it. He raised an eyebrow at the stranger’s salute.
“What’re you doing up there?” he called-- not mad, merely curious. “Y’know, most people don’t enjoy being hit by flying snow.”

Samwise had never heard of any of the holidays that the people of Sallow Hills began to buzz about as the days began to chill. Then again, he had never heard of many things people here talked of. He did his best to learn through library books or stories told by friends and customers.
He had always loved holidays back home. Festivities sprawled out from under the Party Tree across the entire Party Field. If there was one thing a hobbit knew, it was enjoy a good party. It combined their three favorite activities: eating good food, drinking good ale, and having good company. Foreyule (a celebration of the new year) was upon him, and he wasn't going to let the location stop him from having a little party between friends.
This is why he found himself walking down the street, hands full of bags from various shops in town. Everything was going just fine until one of the brown paper bags ripped, sending various items tumbling down the sidewalk. Blast, Samwise Gamgee. Bending down to pick things up, he was really hoping his mishap had gone unnoticed. Unfortunately, he was mistaken, as someone had already approached him.
wickedpotions:
MERLIN WASN’T SCARED OF THE MARI LWYD. he’d been around since the story of the creature first started popping up and while some people had bad interactions with the creature it was far from the most dangerous thing he’d met. He’d met a questing beast before! And saved a unicorn! Which was why he didn’t avoid his usual walks around the forest, nurturing plants and animals through the winter. The little squirrel he’d saved once from being snatched by a hawk was burrowed with their little squirrel family, content and warm. The tree he’d healed from a bad burn was thriving. And currently he was checking in on the holly bushes he’d helped bring to the flourishing life they were in.
HE WAS ALSO TAKING A FEW LEAVES AND BERRIES (with permission of course) when he felt someone walking up on him. Well, the forest felt it. He turned towards the man, offering a smile. ❝ I see I’m not the only one not worried about the Grey Mare. ❞

Sam Gamgee was a man of routine, and no whispers, rumors, or tales were about to throw it off. He had been through... far too much to let small things like that spook him. He would believe such things when he found any evidence of it, or heard any first hand accounts. But, for now, he would continue his walks in the forest. These woods reminded him a little of the Old Forest (except there were no malicious sentient trees here... he hoped so, anyway).
When he came across another figure in the forest, he almost left well enough alone, but then the person spoke, and Sam was drawn in. He flashed a smile back. “Takes a lot to frighten me these days, mister... Merlin, isn't it? What brings you this deep in the forest?”

Some days in Sallow Hills blended together for Sam. They trickled one into the next, uninterrupted in their passing. Other days held much more. In a town like this, it was a gamble on what the day would bring. So far, Samwise’s day had brought him little of interest (aside from finding one of the primula vulgaris he had been tending back to health had bloomed); it was so dull, he found himself half asleep while doing inventory at the front counter.
He shook his head in an attempt to knock some of the drowsiness out. In doing this, he knocked the notebook and pen onto the floor. ‘Ninnyhammer, Sam Gamgee’ he scolded to the empty room. With a sigh, he bent down to pick it up, and by the time he had risen, there was a person in the shop.
“Ah, hello! Can I help you with something?”

The Dwarven Nursery was the best place in town to find plants of many sorts: common, uncommon, and… otherly. The shop was not very large, but it was brimming with life. On certain shelves you would find lush plants, already stable and ready to take home for decorative use. A few shelves, brightly lit by special bulbs, featured tiny sprouts that were barely more than an inch. The back corner was where most of the otherly plants were kept, as they tended to benefit from special treatment. A vast majority of the place held intermediary growths, ready to be planted and still in need of support.
All of the current greenery was being taken care of by one Samwise Gamgee, a man with a kind heart and a particular proclivity for plants. He kept himself busy with work, having little else to do with his time.
Against one wall of the shop, there was a nicely lit workbench (currently littered with loose soils and plants). It’s where Sam had stationed himself nearly an hour ago, now. He had been toying with a strange plant species unfamiliar to him, trying to deduce the best soil and lighting for it. He had cross referenced a few books from the library, yet none had agreed.
It was in the midst of examining freshly cleaned roots with a pair of tweezers that he heard the door. “Be there in a moment!” In a fluid motion, he removed the magnifying glasses he wore, switched the lamplight off, and dusted his hands off on his jeans. Sam made his way up to the counter at the front.
“Welcome in! Can I help you find something? Or do you have a mind already?”

Samwise Gamgee had developed a nice routine over the past few months. Most days, he would go to work, maintain the various plants he looked after, go home, repeat. His days off held slightly more variety, leading him in and out of different shops and eateries, but even they remained relatively dull.
Sam was still fairly new to the town of Sallow Hills, and he was so focused on balancing things out, he had gotten little time to make friends (which was a great disappointment as he loved to socialize). Most who lived there were kind, though. They helped make the sudden change of scenery a little easier.
As in all places, there were people who weren’t so kind. Sam made it a purpose to not stick his nose into other people’s business, his Gaffer’s advice still echoing in his ears after all this time; keep your nose out of trouble, and no trouble will come to you. Though it seemed today was one to break that rule; to his displeasure, he noticed a bit of a scene on his walk home.
It nearly didn’t catch his eye. There was a small mass of people on the side of the walk, and it wasn’t until he had drawn closer that he realized they were amassing around a nervous-looking woman. She looked vaguely familiar, but there wasn't time to dwell on such things. Pushing in on the crowd helped him better figure out the situation.
“Isn't it a bit late in the day to be bothering people on their walks home? Get out of here, the lot of you.” He hadn’t shouted, but said it loud enough for them all to have heard. When he was able, he held out a hand to the woman they had been surrounding. “Come on, best to get you away from here.”
I think I just saw Samwise Gamgee (he/him, cis man, 39). he’s a canon character from lord of the rings. have you heard he remembers most things from his previous life? he appeared here in June 2021 after having a quiet night in with his partners in bag-end. now he’s working as the owner of the Dwarven Nursery. still, he does have that heart of gold, summer rain shower, green-thumb vibe about him.
