That story where 66 Paul parks his car in the middle of the road with the doors open and the radio on and the cop parks it for him and hands him the keys like he's his fucking chauffeur. VS that story where 66 John ends up in a high-speed chase because he doesn't want to sign autographs and the cop pulls him over and makes him sign until his pursuers are satisfied.

I heard stories occasionally – about some sessions he’d done with Phil Spector that went completely out of control, about him going crazy one night and smashing up the record producer Lou Adler’s house. I could see a darkness in some of the people he was hanging out with: Harry Nilsson was a sweet guy, an incredibly talented singer and songwriter, but one drink too many and he’d turn into someone else, someone you really had to watch yourself around. And John and I certainly took a lot of drugs together and had some berserk nights out, as poor old Dr John would tell you. We went to see him at the Troubadour and he invited John onstage to jam. John was so pissed he ended up playing the organ with his elbows. It somehow fell to me to get him offstage.”

A very basic pick, but Chico Buarque is my absolute favorite, he's one of the greats of MPB for a reason. I love practically his entire discography, but his lyric writing is at its best on protest songs like Cálice, Cotidiano, and Roda-Viva. Here's Construção (1971) which gives me chills as much now as the first time I heard it.

Leci Brandão- Used her music to advocate for black/queer rights; some favorites are Antes Que Eu Volte a Ser Nada and Isso É Fundo de Quintal. Here's Deixa Pra Lá (1974)

Novos Baianos- A hugely influential band that mixed rock with samba, their sound is just so fun. Here's Mistério Do Planeta (1972)

Gal Costa- A beloved tropicália artist, her music is everything from beautiful to vibrant. Here's Baby (1969)
