Every sailor knows how the unforgiving heat can cause even the most steadfast of minds to unhinge.
Tasked with scraping off barnacles from the hull, Baltus sat dangling off the side of the ship while it was moored in the bay of a small island. His eyes caught movement from the corner of his eye. Turned his head to see and was greeting by a woman sitting on the rocks. Sweat dripped in his face and he raised an arm to clear his vision, but the woman was gone. Left behind were ripples in the water and empty, salty rocks.
Two brigantines at sea - sailors exchanging salutes, by Joe Duncan Gleason (1881-1959)
“You’ll never be lost at sea, little one. Check the stars, the waves, the compass. You know where you are.
You know how to get home.”
