ENDLESS ELECTRICITY: Here’s A Way Of Turning America’s Roads Into Gigantic Solar Panels
There are about 31,251 square miles of roads, parking lots, driveways, playgrounds, bike paths, and sidewalks in the lower 48 states. If Julie and Scott Brusaw have their way, they will all someday be replaced with solar panels.
For the better part of a decade, the Idaho couple has been working on prototyping an industrial-strength panel that could withstand the weight of even the largest trucks. They now appear to have cracked the formula, developing a specially textured glass coating for the panels that can not only bear tremendous loads but also support standard tire traction.
By their reckoning, at peak installation their panelized roads could produce more than three times the electricity consumed in the U.S.
The material could power electric vehicles through a receiver plate mounted beneath the vehicle and a transmitter plate is installed in the road.

I’m so here for Matt McGorry. I first saw him in OitNB as Bennett (and if you’re up-to-date on that show it’s easy to boo the shit out of his character) so I never thought much of anything about his actor.
But then I start seeing him on social media. He does being a white man so well. He’s an outspoken feminist and he speaks up when there’s injustice that’s affecting the black community. Basically he cares about things that don’t directly affect him, unlike a lot of people in similar positions. And more importantly, he voices his support. He doesn’t just wait for someone to ask him for his opinion so that he can dance around the question and give the most vague non-answer imaginable.
AND he understands his privilege and openly admits that even though he speaks up about these issues he is not an expert. (Meaning he doesn’t do that condescending thing some white people do when they think they understand things like racism and inequality better than the people who actually experience it. i.e. Matt Damon)
And on top of all this, he doesn’t take himself too seriously

From Washington, D.C., the rings would only fill a portion of the sky, but appear striking nonetheless. Here, we see them at sunrise.
From Guatemala, only 14 degrees above the equator, the rings would begin to stretch across the horizon. Their reflected light would make the moon much brighter.
From Earth’s equator, Saturn’s rings would be viewed edge-on, appearing as a thin, bright line bisecting the sky.
At the March and September equinoxes, the Sun would be positioned directly over the rings, casting a dramatic shadow at the equator.
At midnight at the Tropic of Capricorn, which sits at 23 degrees south latitude, the Earth casts a shadow over the middle of the rings, while the outer portions remain lit.

I’m convinced that while everything about the Joker- his murderous instincts, his maniacal laughter, his maddening behaviour- points to him being insane, he is the farthest thing from it. The Jokers greatest prank has been to pull the wool over society’s eyes all these years, masquerading as a madman so as to be thrown into an asylum and treated with kid gloves when apprehended, to be ‘rehabilitated’ rather than punished in a penitentiary. It’s a strategy worthy of a high-stakes player, so it’s apt that he’d be named for a playing card
YOUR generation
YOUR generation was the generation where two teachers could afford to buy a 4-bedroom house in San Diego, CA and then afford the mortgage and raise 2 kids in private school (my parents did this).
YOUR generation was the generation where one parent could work in Financial Aid at the local college and the other could raise 2 kids in a 3 bedroom house (my now-retired coworker did this).
YOUR generation was the generation where you could wash dishes to put yourself through college and law school (my uncle did this).
MY generation can’t buy a home when the average cost is $440k and a combined income of two teachers is only $70k, and they have to pay 35% income to rent, let alone trying to afford children.
MY generation has both parents working, one or both working 2 jobs just to buy food, not even able to afford a family vacation every December.
MY generation is in student debt on average $29,400. And we have scholarships but they only cover 40% of the cost and when law school costs $120k for 2 years, you do the math.
So don’t tell me that it’s MY GENERATION that fucking things up. We’re only 25, we didn’t get in to the war in 2001 (we were 11 years old), we didn’t de-fund mental health institutions in 1975, we didn’t decide that grants and scholarships should be funded less and tuition should cost more, we didn’t raise the housing market 7000% (my childhood home was bought for $95k and sold for $750k 20 years later). MY GENERATION didn’t do any of that, YOUR generation did.
So don’t tell me I “just” need to “get a better job” or that I “only” have to send my kids to “a good school.” Because it doesn’t work like that anymore. And don’t blame me.
