I have just watched "NGE 3.33 You Can (Not) Redo" and I have just realised, the story goes like this:

Dad wants Wife back - dead Wife who presumably kind of died during some weird ass experimentation with Dad, and now Dad is willing to destroy the world as we know it in order to get Wife back. He has a 14 year-old Son, a very kind hearted boy who ultimately does everything his Dad wants, while he does have a deep desire to gain his Dad's love or at least approval. And Dad exploits this. Dad appreciates his son as a tool to achieve his goals, but he also very obviously abuses and manipulates him. Son is also special because of the link he has to Mom and the weird ass thing Mom and Dad was experimenting with.

Curiously, I have also just described Miraculous Ladybug.
