Don't usually share work stuff but I do work in climate policy and nearly every memo I write includes some variation of "government funding for this obscure but necessary area of climate mitigation research has been multiplied (sometimes by like, 1000x) under the Biden Administration" and while I know the oil permitting stuff is much splashier news there's a whole world of work that needs to be done under the surface that Biden is doing. And if he doesn't win in 2024 all that progress goes away and the climate is absolutely fucked

sure! did this a bit ago,
Discord doesn't resent helping Twilight in the least, but its a bit weird for him. Luckily, Twilight herself is super weird to begin with, so she's not unwilling to try things like "Got insomnia? Try becoming a spaghetti pile with the nearest other Draconequus for ultimate cuddle energy" (the purring also helps. very soothing)

Summary : You are 15 years old and you got superpowers after a mysterious accident. Now a vigilante in London, you meet Moonknight on one of your patrols. As you attempt to grieve your loved ones and live your teen/hero life as normally as possible, you discover that bad people are after you and you will need all the help you can get...
Warnings : death, grief, violence, (PTSD ?), mental health issues, blood, wounds, burns. Let me know if I missed any ;)
A/N : Hi ! I'm super obsessed with Moon Knight so I decided to write a fic about it. I might be the only person in the world who doesn't like romance so this will be a platonic teen reader fic ;) I haven't written in a while so I don't know if I'm still good at it, you'll tell me :) Also, English is not my first language, so I'm sorry for the mistakes.
A/N 2 : The reader is gender neutral, I'll use the pronouns they/them. The story takes place after the events of season 1 of Moon Knight BUT the Moonboys are still Khonshu's avatars ;)

It was around 3 am. The wind blew through the tree branches, making the nocturnal birds chirp. The lights in the houses were off : their occupants must have been sleeping for hours already. The weather was freezing, even for London. You shiver in your light clothes. You were mad at yourself for not packing a jacket, but it was too late to think about it. You look up at the star-studded sky and continue walking through the park, the moon being the only thing illuminating your steps.
You couldn't sleep and you decided to go out on patrol. It was something that had become familiar over the past few weeks. Sometimes you ran into criminals and you managed to catch them, sometimes the nights were calm. In both cases, this leaves you free to experiment with your new powers. You've even become somewhat famous in the news over the past few weeks as "Blue Phoenix," the vigilante of the night. You rarely acted in broad daylight because you were afraid of being caught. But when duty calls, you must respond, no matter the danger. You had been in the "business" only about a month ago and you were slowly getting used to it.
You raise your bare right arm in front of your face. It was completely burned, from its fingertips to its shoulder. It had taken on a reddish-brown hue and was covered with long scars. You lightly shake your hand, which instantly ignites. The blue flames lit up your face and you smiled. Blue circles stretched under your eyes, contrasting with your very pale skin. Controlling your new powers had taken you months. You could now ignite your right arm at will and project your blue flames. You no longer accidentally set your things on fire, which you said was a feat. It didn't burn you, you just felt a pleasant warmth and a slight tickling sensation. You clench your fist and the flames go out.
You had to go back to school in just a few hours, which made you nervous. You had not been there for four months. Since...
Confused images of shards of glass and fire invaded your mind. Screams of pain and panic echoed around you. In the general confusion, you see blurry images of elongated bodies and badly damaged cars. A hot and sticky liquid runs down your face, and you scream as you feel a terrible burn on your right arm.
You snap back to reality, gasping for breath. You shake your head violently, trying to come to your senses. Since the accident, you had buried your emotions deep within yourself, refusing to think back to that night. Yet, no matter how hard you tried, images of that moment came back to haunt you, whether you were asleep or awake. That night, you got your powers but lost everything...
You bring your hood over your head and replace your mask to cover the lower half of your face. You were dressed in your vigilante "costume," as on each of your patrols : a loose black cargo tight at the ankles and a black hoodie whose right sleeve was torn, revealing your burned arm. Having a bare arm gave you more freedom to use your powers. On the back of your sweatshirt was a handmade symbol : a blue phoenix surrounded by flames of the same color, which had earned you your name in the media.
~~~~~~
Sounds of breaking glass were heard in the darkness, soon followed by shouts. You sighed, realizing that your night wouldn't be as peaceful as you had hoped. You rush in the direction the noise is coming from, trying not to be noticed in order to maintain the element of surprise.
You soon arrived at a grocery store you knew well. You often came here when you ran out of sweets and soda. There were four masked men, all at least twice your size and three times your weight. The shop window was smashed and you could hear them laughing and calling out to each other as they emptied the cash register. Their sleeves were rolled up at the elbows. You saw an identical tattoo on the left forearm of each man. You thought they were scales but you couldn't be sure at that distance.
You wrinkle your nose at the strong smell of alcohol. They were obviously very drunk, which did not prevent them from taking new bottles of beer from the store fridge and emptying them in a few sips.
You stand in the doorway of the grocery store, arms akimbo, straightening up as much as you can, trying to look menacing. You knew even drunk thieves wouldn't be fooled. After all, you were only a fifteen years old teen. You curse your genes for making you shorter and skinnier than other teenagers your age.
The men hadn't noticed your presence yet, too busy drinking and putting as much money and stuff in their bags. You cleared your throat, trying to get their attention. They all lifted their heads in one motion. When they saw your frail little figure, they snickered.
"Well, well, what do we have here ?" Said the one who seemed to be their leader. "A little dwarf."
The others burst out laughing at his remark. You remained impassive despite your indignation. You weren't that short, were you ?
"Who are you anyway ?" Another asked sarcastically. "And what happened to your arm ?" He add with a disgusted look.
You were used to people's disgusted looks when they saw your arm. On some of your previous patrols, even the people you saved gave you that look. To avoid this, you hid your arm with long sleeves and black leather gloves when you weren't Blue Phoenix. It was also so people wouldn't make the connection between you and the masked vigilante.
With an irritated look, you answered him, trying to make your voice deeper and more imposing than it was.
"You never watch the news or what ? I am Blue Phoenix !"
You lifted your chin at the last sentence, sparking even more laughter from the men. Clearly, you had to revise your superhero lines : you looked like an angry toddler. How embarrassing.
"I had no idea the incredible Blue Phoenix was this small !" Resumed the first man. "What are you gonna do, dwarf ? Slap our knees ?"
Okay, the joke was funny. You had to bite your cheeks to keep a serious face. But you remember not laughing with the enemies. Especially with those who would probably beat the shit out of you, not caring to be four against one.
The four men approached you, brandishing bats and broken beer bottles, smiling menacingly. What a bunch of cowards, you think. You weren't really surprised though but why did they always have to come straight to violence ? You backed out onto the sidewalk in the cold night air. You weren't really scared but you wanted to get them away from the store. You didn't want to risk starting a fire by using your powers in an enclosed space. But seeing them approach you with wide smiles, like sharks having spotted a swimmer's bare bottom, you felt less confident.
You had practiced very little martial arts in your life and your fighting skills sucked. Of course, you knew how to throw a punch and the vulnerable points of the body, but that was it. During your patrols, you never had to fight more than two people at the same time. But now, they were four, drunk and seem to want to use you as a punching bag, although you haven't done anything to them (yet). If you didn't have your powers, the outcome of the fight would have been predictable.
"I always wanted to fight a hero ! Can I kill them ?" Said one of the men cruelly.
'Fucking psycho', you think. Okay, maybe they're not just drunk men. With your luck, you might have come across the mafia or something like that. You sighed annoyingly. You didn't have time for the mafia. You had school tomorrow, goddammit ! You wondered what your chances were of beating them without burning them alive and just using your fists. Zero, obviously. When you started your new "job", you swore to yourself that no matter what, you would never kill. You also tried not to inflict serious burns on your opponents, but it was difficult because you couldn't defend yourself otherwise.
You mentally shake your head and decide to ignore the statistics. You bent your knees and raise your fists in front of your face in a fighting stance, waiting for the first blow. It arrived faster than expected. The leader lunged at you, raising his bat. You quickly dodged a blow that could have broken your nose and sent a jet of blue flames to his pants. He screamed, his legs on fire, and rolled on the floor desperately trying to extinguish the flames that were spreading up his body.
Two other men lunged at you, holding broken beer bottles with dangerously sharp edges. You quickly dodged the first bottle, which flew dangerously close to your face. Because of your height, which did not favor you, you had to rely more on your cunning and your speed. You sent your right fist on fire in the face of one of them, hitting him in the nose. He backed off, hands over his face, screaming in pain. The second managed to reach you : the pointed end of the bottle plunged into your thigh, causing a deep cut, the scarlet liquid splashing on the ground. Before you could scream or fight back, the fourth man sent his huge fist crashing into your nose, knocking you to the ground on your bottom, eyes watering. The blood started pouring out of your nose quickly. You felt it running under your mask, on your lips and your chin, and you hoped it wasn't broken.
Well, the fight quickly ended. It was almost embarrassing how rapidly you were knocked down. In your defense, you were only a beginner and a child while they were grown ass men.
If you made it out alive, you promised yourself to take self-defense lessons instead of watching tutorials on YouTube.
Three of the men now stood above you, furious. The one whose legs you burned lay on the ground, his clothes in tatters, whining pathetically. One of them, his face bloody and covered in blisters from the burns you had inflicted on him, seemed to want to break your neck. He approached you murderously and pulled out a switchblade. You crawled back on the ground, forgetting your powers at the sight of the weapon. It was very tall and covered in dried blood. You thought that it was probably not their first time and that they must have already done a lot of harm around them. They're probably part of a gang, you tell yourself anxiously. You were right. They're not just drunk men. They were more dangerous than you thought. You should really start to stop underestimating your enemies.
"And you dare to call yourself a hero ? You are pitiful." A grimace of disgust accompanied his words.
You clenched your fist, waiting for the usual blue flames to form in it. You wouldn't let yourself be insulted like that. You had lost your cool but you knew that despite his appearance, this drunk was no match for your fire.
Before the man decides to stab you, you see a blurry object pass your eyes and... sink into his throat.
'Is that a banana ?' you think stupidly.
You realized it was actually a crescent-shaped blade. The man in front of you made a few disgusting gurgles, choking on his own blood, and you watched him fall right next to you, horrified. His blood had spattered your clothes and your face, and you thought stupidly how in the hell you would manage to clean the red fluid from your vigilante costume. Before you could digest what had just happened, you felt someone coming next to you and saw a glimpse of a long white cloak. You flinched, still on the ground, and raised your head to met eyes shining with a white halo. What in the world ...?
The newcomer wore what appeared to be a white armor with a hood and a mask of the same color. His long white cape trailed on the bloody floor, slowly soaking up the liquid. He wore a breastplate from which you saw him withdraw his golden crescent moon blades.
'Wait a damn minute'. This man was strangely familiar to you. He was the man from the news ! How could you have forgotten ? Everyone has been talking about him for the past two weeks. A story about a sudden eclipse, a moving sky, giant monsters and hundreds of people dying at the same time in Cairo, if you remember correctly. The man in white was present on the scene accompanied by a woman with golden wings. They seemed to have been the ones who stopped this madness but no one knew who they were. You hadn't really paid attention to the news for the past few years. In your defense, after Loki, the mad god, the Avengers and a purple alien arriving on Earth to wipe out half of the population, nothing surprised you anymore and you hadn't even bothered to be interested about what had happened in Egypt. You know it was selfish but you had enough problems as it is and it's not like you could've done anything about it.
The remaining three men shouted in rage and all rushed at the man in white at the same time, waving their weapons. With a quick movement, so quick it seemed blurry to your eyes, he took the blades from his chest and launched them at the criminals, hitting them in the chest and stomach, without even giving them time to touch him.
You gasped loudly, seeing more blood coming from new wounds. You stared at the bodies lying all around you and the blood soaking the floor and your clothes with wide eyes. It was the first time that one of your missions went so badly. It's never been as bloody as usual : you just threw punches and kicks and lightly burned your opponents, but no one ever died, whether among the criminals or the people you had to save, and you were happy about that. Of course, you knew that heroes couldn't always save everyone but you thought you were doing pretty well so far.
Your bottom lip quivered and you felt your stomach churn. You tried in vain to keep your emotions in check and resume your usual impassive look but you couldn't stop your whole body from shaking. You quickly removed your mask, turning your back on the man in white, and vomited the contents of your stomach on the floor already soiled.
"Hey, you alright kid ?"
The man in the suit walked towards you and you jumped. You wiped your mouth with your sleeve and quickly put your mask back on. Luckily, he hadn't had time to see your face. You crawled back on the floor with a squeal of fear, soaking your clothes even more with the scarlet liquid, thinking you were his next victim. You knew it was stupid to think that since he was considered a superhero and had saved the world two weeks ago but the shock of what had just happened confused your mind. Being a hero hadn't stopped him from killing those men. Even if they were criminals, you didn't think they deserved to die like this.
The man stopped and raised his hands soothingly.
"Hey, it's okay kid. I'm not going to hurt you."
You stopped crawling back and looked up at him. He seemed sincere but you preferred to keep your distance. Even after killing those men, he was still a hero, wasn't he ? He wouldn't hurt you, would he ?
Suddenly, his mask retracted and revealed his face. He had black hair whose curls fell in front of his face and tanned skin. His brown eyes were soft, trying to look reassuring. With his thick eyebrows, he kinda reminded you of the Grumpy Eagle from the Muppet Show. At this thought, you almost laughed and you had to bite the inside of your cheeks. 'It's probably the shock,' you thought.
"I'm not a kid," You manage to mutter.
The man before you chuckled.
"Oh yeah ? I can recognize a kid's voice when I hear one, you know."
"I. Am. Not. A. Kid. I am Blue Phoenix ! Does anyone watch the news here or what ?"
You tried in vain to adopt a severe and adult tone, but your voice sounded plaintive to your own ears. You couldn't stand having an adult treat you condescendingly. Once again, you curse your genes. You get up with difficulty, your legs trembling. You were blushing at the way you had lost your temper, you who were supposed to be strong and fearless.
"Yeah, I heard about you. No one told me you were a child though."
You glared at him without saying anything. He raised his hands again.
"Sorry, I meant an adult. It's obvious that you're an adult despite your height and your voice," He declared in a mocking tone.
You roll your eyes and turn your back to him, walking in the opposite direction. Obviously, he noticed right away that you were very young. You had to find something to hide your youth. Maybe a voice modulator ? At this point you will also need stilts. You felt a hand grab your arm and pull you back. You turn around with an annoyed look.
"Listen, man. Thanks for saving me and everything, but i had the situation under control..."
He replied with a sneer.
"Yeah, I saw that."
"...AND I have to get going. Bye !"
Again, you turned your back to him and left. And again, he grabbed you by the arm, turning you to face him.
"What ?"
He was staring at your leg with a concerned look.
"You're bleeding."
"No shit, Sherlock."
"Let me see. I think you might need stitches."
You flinched when he tried to touch your wound.
"Thanks man, but I can take care of myself."
You wondered why a stranger was so worried about you. Especially one who had no trouble killing.
Before he could protest, you raised your right hand and shot a blue flame behind him. His gaze followed it with a fascinated look, and when he turned back to you, you weren't there anymore.
~~~~~~
You finally stopped running a few blocks away, trying to catch your breath, hands on your knees. You may not be good at fighting (yet), but one thing was for sure, you could run faster than anyone. You looked worriedly over your shoulder and sighed in relief when you saw that he wasn't following you.
You inspected the gash in your thigh and noted with relief that it wasn't as deep as you thought. Nothing serious. However, you had to stop the bleeding if you didn't want to leave a red streak behind you. You lifted your right index finger, surrounded by a small blue flame, and hesitantly brought it to your wound.
