Lineart
When i first started drawing i was really into art styles that involved line art. Line art is an easy way to get the figure out and the open and can really make it easier to build up the figure, coloring and details. There are many different ways to draw/paint a piece but for now i want to talk about line art, how it works and different ways it can be used.
I always see people talk about how much they hate line art but honestly i love it. To improve your line art you will need line confidence, line thickness, line color, and line suggestion.
First is line confidence to achieve this you need to STOP drawing scratchy/hairy lines. This is when you draw multiple tiny lines to create the figure. Do not be afraid of your own lines, you need to draw long smooth lines. When I’m drawing on tablet program such as procreate a thing that can help is putting streamline up to max, it will help control my lines to make them less wiggly and i can draw long smooth lines with ease. For pc users you need to use control z more or use the eraser more to help fix some mistakes. Also just drawing traditionally can help immensely. Grab some sheets of paper and do daily warms up of drawing straight lines in a fast but controllable pace, drawing circles and swirls can help as well. Make a habit of using your elbow more for big lines, it gives more control
For line thickness when the lines converge try and add fatter lines where they merge. Adding lines to creases and crevices will add more depth to the drawing. When it comes to details in the piece use thinner finer lines. On procreate you can adjust the pressure curve of your pen to help you out when you’re transfering to lighter or darker line weights.
Also another little tip when drawing something and you want to express that an items closer to the view point then another then darken the lines. The front has darker lines the back has finer lines.
Lineart can also help with understanding where the lighting of the piece is coming from, where ever the darker lines lay thats where the shadow belongs, where the finer lines are layed is where the light is hitting.
For linecolor it can help alot with your look and perspective. So for an example if a item is far away in the background you can change it into a slightly lighter color to convey that. Lighten and darken your values to add more to the persepective of your drawing. Also you can change the color of your lineart so for example your character has lighter skin then give them a pinkish type of lineart, the character has blonde hair give them a blondish orange type of lineart for their hair. You just need to tint it a little never have lineart just be pitch black, add some colors to it like brown, blue pink and red.
Lastly line suggestion is when you use lines in a different way to show the viewer that what they’re looking at isn’t just a straight object. So An example of this is a curved surface, to give it some volume u need to suggest it, so by adding tiny lines and details. This will give it a look as if its a curving or round object and not just a solid blocky one. This can also help with folds in clothings and clothes. So if the fold is inwards you create lines inside the fold then as the lines are reaching the end out of the the fold they fade out. An example of this will be in the bottom the best way i can explain this look is like hatching.
I will show you examples down below of a few of my line art related works and i will show you what setting i have on my procreate. When doing line art i like using the dry ink brush because it adds a lot of depth very easily. I use to use the soft hair brush and i still think its good because it helps a lot with line value. Also this is optional but i love to duplicate my line art layer then gaussian blurring it, lower the opacity to around 30. It just gives it a more softer look.
