I really need more information on this original johnxringo version of Help- I have not been able to sleep calmly knowing what we as a society were deprived of
So I first discovered this in the Help! Novelization but I assumed at the time it was a line that had been made up for the book.
HOWEVER, for Christmas my best friend got me this special Help! Deluxe collector's set which came with a facsimile of the original script and—
Why this line was written and then ultimately ommitted we'll never know. (However, there's a LOT of cut lines in the movie [most of them are jokes that make a lot more sense than what we ended up with lmaoooo] and, judging by the descriptions from the band of how high they were and how little they cared in general, I assume the vast majority of cuts were because they weren't able to deliver the line well enough or at all.)
ALSO the German dubbing of the movie plays into this in a weird way as well. One day I'll make a whole post just about the German dubbing because it's An Experience.
John and Ringo having previously been in a relationship makes the movie SO MUCH funnier to me, like John is very knowingly watching his ex-boyfriend-current-roommate suffer and even consciously torturing him for whatever his past trespassings were, and Paul is his protective lapdog bestie encouraging him.
truly no one does it like mclennon when it comes to literary devices. paul and john being narrative foils, both insanely creative and competitive to a fault? the dramatic irony of john being able to recognize paul's music from MULTIPLE FLOORS down in the dakota while paul thought john hated his guts? the imagery of paul trying to pull tape of his bass while talking to john in dreams? the symbolism of paris (the city of love) being the happiest memory they'd both reminisce about in future years? the foreshadowing of "think of me now and then, old friend"? the tragedy of "all my loving" allegedly playing over the hospital pa the minute john died? its honestly stomach turning and the worst part is that all of that literally, actually happened
This is a renaissance painting. To me.
The Beatles Press Conference After Their USA Visit
obsessed with paul’s motherly ‘stop it’ slap after george’s offended comment
Thinking about the story of Paul always straightening John's tie.
Thinking about how for John, having his tie loose and the top button undone was his little act of rebellion and push back to having to wear suits all the time in their early years, and Paul always coming up to him before a show and straighten it up, was Paul saying "shape up, knock it off, don't disturb the peace."
But when Paul when he heard this, he said "There’s a story that I used to straighten John’s tie before we went on stage. That seems to have become a symbol of what my attitude was supposed to have been. I’ve never straightened anyone’s tie in my life, except perhaps affectionately.”
To Paul, he wasn't trying to tell John to stop, he wasn't asking him to change something about himself, he wasn't trying to make him do anything. To Paul, that was a show of affection. That's how he showed all the excitement and joy before they would go on stage together.
Paul saw fixing a problem as an act of love, and John saw it as an act of criticism.
And this, ladies and gentlemen, is a perfect illustration of how they were always doomed.
