On Leonard McCoy
An old rant I made dedicated to my favorite doctor
You see, I have fallen in love with every single one of the characters in Star Trek, they all have such diverse personalities and fun quirks that makes them so enjoyable to watch, read about, and even just think about.
They have become iconic through generations, and I love every single one of them. And to think of the impact that they have achieved on the world and how society is today, is unbelievable. Truly incredible.
Now, with these said, I love all of them, but right now let me talk about our dear southern ol’ country doctor.
Dr. Leonard Horatio “Bones” McCoy, nicknamed bones (a variation of sawbones, a term used for doctors back in the day) by none other than his life long friend Jim Kirk.
He is wonderful. And he is a character that goes through so much pain. They all do, of course. Who can forget the racism Spock ensued, and the tragedy of seeing a massacre when Jim was still young. But right now, let’s tak about McCoy.
He was a simple man, an emotional and irrational man in comparison to the logical Spock, who he always has philosophical arguments with (which I really enjoy watching), yet one of the smartest men in the Star Trek universe. In comparison to his colleagues, he is a simple man. He grew up on earth, studied to be a surgeon at a regular school, yet still with his incredible wit became the chief medical officer aboard the most famous spaceship in all the federation, the USS Enterprise.
As said, he has his friends and colleagues, yet something we are always able to tell, is the feeling of loneliness that bones always carries around with him. He has an ex-wife, and a daughter that barely speaks to him. Apart from his crew mates, he is utterly alone. And him, being such a warm, kind hearted, caring, and loving individual, doesn’t let show how badly the lack of romantic love in his life affects him. Which it does. So much that in the last episode I watched “for the world is hollow and I have touched the sky” he was about to marry a woman he has just met, just because she was besotted with him and because he was convinced he was going to die of a terminal illness and his whole life had been lived without love. Nothing shows how badly alone a person has felt their whole life, than this. An excerpt taken directly from the episode:
NATIRA: You have lived a lonely life? MCCOY: Yes, very lonely.
It is probably because of this loneliness, that he carries himself around with a grumpy exterior. But anyone that knows him, knows that is not how he really is. This man always carries himself with such joy when it comes to his patients and his friends. A truly remarkable trait. Something I personally admire deeply.
Apart form his sadness and grumpiness, what this shows is that Bones is the most human of them all. Jim and Spock, even with Spock not even being a human, assert their humanity a lot, which is wonderful. But out of the three of them, the one that was created to act as a moral compass, and the heart, was bones. He is the most human of them all, and I like to show these with quotes said directly by him.
“"Jim, every doctor and nurse from here to the Rim lives in hope that one day we'll wake up and find that everybody in the Universe is perfectly healthy and in possession of a signed certificate from God saying that they're going to die peacefully in their sleep. Then we can all retire and go fishing”
"You see, I feel sorrier for you than I do for him because you'll never know the things that love can drive a man to. The ecstasies, the miseries, the broken rules, the desperate chances, the glorious failures, the glorious victories. All of these things you'll never know simply because the word love isn't written into your book."
Apart form this, it has been shown countless times, that he has a strict moral compass which he follows even more than the rules, something a true heart would do
"To blazes with regulations! You can't let him take command when you know he's wrong." - McCoy to Spock on Commodore Decker
He is human, kind, caring, intelligent, and very very fun. He is a joy to watch on screen and the way he interacts with other characters just gives me life.
And yet again, he always feels alone. No love in his life, except for the few people that appreciate him and have the pleasure of calling themselves his friends.
I cannot explain, but he is wonderful, a role model, someone we should all aspire to be. And my feelings towards him are those of deep rooted admiration. He always manages to make me smile.
And so here, I leave one of my favorite inspirational quotes said by him:
"In this galaxy there's a mathamatical probability of three million Earth type planets. And in all of the universe, three million million galaxies like this. And in all of that... and perhaps more... only one of each of us."
I have ranted too much. Do forgive me.
I know I'm too simple 😅

This has probably already been on someone's mind, but....
On Earth (although it sounds strange to say it) we often use the name of the person who discovered or invented it in body parts, formulas, theories...
The most characteristic are the units for measuring magnitudes (tesla, ampere, Hertz...) or the name given to some elements of the periodic table (Copernicium, Rutherfordium, Mendelevium... -these names are not related to the ones who discovered them-).
Other examples are Maxwell's laws or equations in physics.
El complejo de Golgi en Biología
The Golgi aparatus in Biology
Brönsted-Lowry acids and bases in Chemistry
El triángulo de Tartaglia en Matemáticas
Tartaglia's triangle in Mathematics
Y muchos más que hay en ciencia.
And many more in science.
Everybody on this planet knows these names. So if someone mentions it, we know what they are talking about.
But... What if we were to meet an extraterrestrial intelligent species?
Human 1: I can't get messages sent in here.
Human 2: Yes, this building is a real Faraday cage.
Extraterrestre: ¿De qué estarán hablando?
Extraterrestrial: What are they talking about?
(For those who don't know what a Faraday cage is, you can look it up on the internet, but its basic function is to not let an electric field be inside it)
What I am getting at is that we name things after their discoverers, but we do not take into account that they are names that only we understand.
Bringing this back to Star Trek, the humans on the Enterprise know what they mean when they talk. What about Spock, did he learn all those names to understand the illogical humans he lives with? If he did, he probably doesn't know all of them. And do they have names like that to describe similar things on Vulcan?
Bones: Spock, in Vulcans, how much insulin do the islets of Langerhans produce?
Spock: 🤨 ... Perdóneme, doctor. ¿Los islotes de... quién?
Spock: 🤨 ... Forgive me, Doctor. The islets of... whom?
(These are a group of cells that produces insulin in the pancreas)
Thinking about this also shows that these coincidences also occur among ourselves. The clearest way to see this is with the units of measurement of distance, weight or capacity. We have metres, miles, yards, inches.... And each of these units is defined according to a random criterion (that is why the International System of Units was created).
If it varies greatly from one region of our planet to another, what makes us think that it will not vary in other planet?
¿Y el tiempo? Los segundos se definen así:
What about time? The seconds are defined like this:
One second is the duration of 9 192 631 770 oscillations of the radiation emitted in the transition between the two hyperfine levels of the ground state of the 133 isotope of the caesium atom (133Cs), at a temperature of 0 K.
This means that a second is measured in reference to the oscillations of radiation between given quantum energy levels of a Cesium atom, of a given isotope, and at a given temperature (which happens to be absolute 0, something that has never been achieved in a laboratory). This definition was arrived at because this fraction of time (due to the time it takes the Earth to go around the Sun) has always been used and they tried to fit it to something related to matter.
The problem comes when on other planets the translation time is not 365 days (approximately). It is already difficult for the way of measuring time to coincide with the one in the Earth if it takes the same time to go around the Sun, so I don't say if it doesn't take the same time.
What I am trying to say is that everything we know is relativised. We tend to fit new discoveries to theories we already know that we believe they're true and we are afraid of having to erase everything and start all over again. We fear to think that what we know is a lie. Because, certainly, we know very little about the world around us, and if the world makes us realise that we are wrong and know nothing about this life, we are overcome with a sense of loneliness, doubt and awe that makes us feel miserable, small, transient in this infinite universe.
Gracias 🖖😄
Sorry for this long post. This is all very deep, and I hope you have made it this far and understood my message. Thank you 🖖😄

Can you imagine a Valentine's Day on the Enterprise?
Everyone receiving and giving things to people while Spock watches, thinking how illogical this party is. Why is it illogical? Maybe because he believes that love should be developed every day of the year, with patience and care, and he doesn't see the point of showing it massively at that moment.
McCoy, on the other hand, wants to teach the Vulcan that this special day is celebrated to take love further. It's not a simple celebration that is forgotten the next day; it's the moment to ask yourself if you are giving everything to the person you love the most. Or, on the contrary, to take the first step in a relationship.
A classic is to dress up as Cupid with his angel wings and love arrows.
Even if Spock has had an arrow shot, it doesn't look like love is what he's feeling right now

Short story: Spock and McCoy are on holiday in a house (alone?)
'Spock is reading a book on his padd sitting on the couch in the living room. In the heat wave, the atmosphere is sweltering, like a late July day, even in that house. But the Vulcan doesn't mind, after all, he's from a planet that has a much higher temperature every day of the year. In fact, he's wearing a long-sleeved black T-shirt, and he's comfortable like that.
McCoy, for his part, can't stand the heat any longer, he needs to cool down and get some cooler clothes or else he feels like he'll melt right there and then. He goes to take a cold shower and puts on a rather loose-fitting robe. He's in a good mood now, and feels like singing a bit. He hasn't seen Spock for a while. Where is he? He doesn't know. That fool has probably gone out into the street, I don't know how he doesn't scorch out there. It's four o'clock in the afternoon! He shrugs his shoulders and goes on singing happily. He knows Spock so well that he's sure that nothing will happen to him. He comes like a bullet into the living room'
(Drawings from here. I put a "read more" to make this post shorter)
'McCoy was very embarrassed to walk into the living room like that. He doesn't remember singing anything in front of Spock, nor does he remember wearing only a robe in Spock's company. He has left the living room with the same speed with which he entered and has hurried to his room, tightening the belt of his robe securely. He's not sure if he'll be able to sit at the table with Spock for dinner that day.
The Vulcan is sitting on the couch, unable to move his arms. The padd is covering his whole face. There's no one else there, but he's so ashamed that he feels better hiding. For the first time on that holiday he feels hot, but it's not a suffocating heat, it's a pleasant heat, which he feels inside his body and not just on his skin. Seeing the doctor in that robe had sent a shiver down his spine, and part of him wanted to experience it again. He has surprised himself by thinking that, but he can't fool himself. Some time later, he decides to go and talk to him'

McCoy takes advantage of any moment to tease Spock. He's just joking, but Vulcans don't joke. This sometimes takes him by surprise.

Well, I've finished the story and sketching the comic I previously mentioned a while ago.
This would be the cover (I don't know how to draw Jim, but this is the time he looks the most like him)
Tittle: 'Guilty by accident'
Spones in the Mirrorverse (part 1)
This first part is about how Spock investigates a murder (and I don't want to make spoiler, so I won't say more). I want to make it clear that I'm not a writer, so don't expect a masterpiece of storytelling 😆
It's supposed to be about Spones, and I've focused on the relationship they have in the Mirrorverse. I've already thought about the continuations to this comic, that's why it says first part (I have up to a fifth part)
I'm not sure how to upload the comic, whether to upload one page at a time or until there's a cut scene. I think I'll upload four pages at a time (which is equivalent to one sheet for me). This story is 35 sheets long (and I haven't started transcribing it yet, I'm starting today. As I finish each page, I'll upload it)
Moreover, I will only upload the English version (with the dialogues translated from Spanish) so that you don't have to read the translation outside of the drawing. If someone wants me to upload the original in Spanish, let me know, I have no problem (I only upload it in English because most people don't speak Spanish and understand English better, but if someone tells me, I'll upload it in Spanish too)
