Last year for my fall undergrad thesis (2021), I illustrated dust jackets for Suzanne Collins’ Hunger Games series. Each cover was meant to focus on the different arenas portrayed in the books alongside little details for avid readers. When lined up on a shelf, the book spines create on continuous city scene. For my thesis display, the book titles and author’s name were printed in reflective gold to stand out. A very fun project.

Maturing is realizing that Luke Castellan was never the villain. The gods and Kronos were. He was just an angry kid who felt forgotten and ignored by his father and the other gods. He was used and manipulated by Kronos the same way the gods used him and other demigods before. And Percy Jackson and the Olympians is about the cycle of abuse and neglect. From Kronos, to the gods, to the demigods; from Kronos who ate his children, to the gods who ignored theirs. Then along comes Percy Jackson, Percy who recognized the cycle and said no more, Percy who used his one gift from the gods to make sure they never let what happened to Luke happen again. No more forgotten and angry children left to fend for themselves, left to grow resentful of gods so much so they end up being used and manipulated by Kronos who was just as bad as the gods and worse. No more Luke Castellans. Maybe Luke didn’t break the cycle but Percy did because of him and that’s so important.

can’t stop thinking about percy’s claiming scene now let me hold on a second.
we have this child, who has barely just escaped death by a hellhound, seemingly being healed by water. the girl who kinda-sort-of-hates-him knows full well what is happening. his wounds heal. she mutters about how she didn’t want this to happen. this could only mean one thing. poseidon, they whisper. and sure enough, just above his head, is a holographic figure of a trident.
ngl i have chiron’s line memorized by now lol.
“earthshaker, stormbringer, father of horses. hail perseus jackson, son of the sea god.”
and it’s just beautiful imagery, because everyone bows to him. everyone, as in, even the ares kids who had just tried to kill him. and it hits different if you think about how technically, percy jackson is a sea prince. it hits different when you realize that in canon, no other demigod got this treatment. maybe it was because few children of poseidon existed in comparison to zeus, or that poseidon is seen as a more elemental and primordial god, therefore is shown more respect. it hits different when you realize that percy becomes a figure of respect and dignity.
whatever the case, this scene FUCKS ME UP. annabeth bows down, chiron bows down, luke bows down, clarisse bows down…and meanwhile, the kid in question is scared out of his goddamn mind. he just thinks: why are they treating me this way? i don’t want this power. i don’t want this attention. i don’t want respect. because, here’s the thing—he’s not used to it.
but from then on…percy will be treated this way, like royalty, bc technically he is. his father is the ruler of the seas, and the ocean has always been feared, has always been respected and admired. and not only that, but he grows into that power. it’s so interesting to see this little boy who was just told, in the most dramatic way possible, who his father is—and then see a dramatic change in his character during botl when he wants more power as he cleans the horse stables in texas and realizes that the sea was inside of him all this time. that he is unrestrained. it’s so interesting to go from a little boy who wants nothing to do with his dad and his powers to a 16 year-old who sinks his sword into the williamsburg bridge and causes it to split in half. like his father did in athens. he commands armies, becomes his father’s son as he screams out when he realizes that michael yew is nowhere to be found, and so, with that scream, he makes the ground shake. he unleashes that power with titans, with gods, with monsters. and he cannot be stopped from then on, when he realizes that it’s inside him, that he has no choice but to want it. even if it scares him, at first.
so that claiming scene creates, in my mind, this domino effect on percy and his link to the ocean. to his father.
earthshaker, stormbringer…it all comes full circle. and the next time a group of demigods bow down to him, i can assure you that he’ll accept it, grimly. because what choice does he have? he is poseidon’s mortal son, and still he makes the ground shake and the seas rise to his command. he is the camp leader—but each day that his powers grow, everyone questions if he’s truly half human in the first place, or if he maybe belongs to the sea, as his father’s lieutenant like zeus had suggested in the first place.

sometimes i’m normal about the hunger games and then i remember that in district 12 there’s a wedding ceremony where the couple toasts a piece of bread together in order to signify the beginning of their shared new life and then the main character and her love interest are the girl on fire and the boy with the bread and their first fucking interaction is when he burns a loaf of bread to give to her
Thinking about how children of Poseidon will always be stronger, have more range than any other big three child.
Like Zeus's domain is mainly in the sky. He's about order. Law. Lightning. Wind. He gets storms as a side product of lightning and wind. But he has control over those; he can make them gentle just as he can make them destructive.
Hades is the dead. His domain is over souls, over the minerals and riches and the fallen mortals, monsters and everything that lies in rest in the earth. He's all about justice for the dead. He doesn't show off his power nearly as much as his brothers because he's more of a judge and overseer than a raging, wrathful god.
But Poseidon? Yes, his domain is the sea but he is so much more. He is also the storm bringer and the earthshaker. He has chaotic power over his brother's primary domains. You'd think that Zeus would be the storm bringer cause he has lightning? No. It's Poseidon. You'd think that Hades would be the earthshaker because the depth of the earth and the underworld is his domain. No. Its Poseidon. And those particular powers that Poseidon has in his brother's domains are not neutral or calm. They are powers of destruction and deadly force. It is not in a storm's nature to be gentle, nor is it in a earthquakes nature to be gentle. Poseidon's powers are predisposed to chaos. (Chaos, the strongest and first of the primordial gods).
And then on top of that, Poseidon has domain over the sea. The sea, which we know even less than our own solar system. Everything from the depth of the sea to the shallow waters. The waves, the creatures within, the monsters within. They're all Poseidon's.
What did Percy say in tlo again? "Kronos knows Poseidon can tip the scales against Typhon?"
Not Zeus, not Hades, not any of the other Olympians or gods. Poseidon.
Yeah.
Poseidon is the strongest Olympian god, and Percy is the strongest demigod and it's not even close.

Listen, i just need to know why Sydney rejected Marcus the way she did in Omelette. ESPECIALLY after that incredibly intimate table scene and Carmy buying her a monogramed chef jacket. Like she has no reason to that we know of, we’ve already seen them hang out outside of work so we know they’re friends and they have a sweet friendship. So WHY did she react the way she did? why was it so awkward for her. UNLESS she only sees him as a friend and maybe she already has feelings for someone else, maybe someone like Car-*GUNSHOT*
The original percy jackson series is about cycles of abuse and neglect, right. Were introduced to percy as a kid who has clearly been left behind by a school system that has given up on him, restless and unengaged and self-defetist because hes been given nothing that works for him and no one even tries to meet him where he is. Then hes told no, listen, your neurodivergence is amazing and you just need to be given something that actually utilizes your unique palatte. And thats obviously the uplifting idea rick wanted for his kids, right. But once we get to know chb the same cycles are happening there too. There are kids "left behind" there too for one reason or another, because their parents dont want to claim them, because their parents werent important enough to get a cabin. Do you get it, all the kids who dont fit the most common neurotypes get shoved into the same closet. Kids are being left in a cruel world to fend for themselves without the tools they need. Theyre dying because no one bothered to accommodate them. Its such an obvious parallel that the first chapter introduces a teacher whos written to be especially hard on percys disability and she turns out to literally be one of these monsters trying to kill him. Meanwhile sally jackson tells him she named him after Perseus because she wanted a redemption for a hero whos story ended in tragedy. Meanwhile every book in the series replicates a greek myth step for step until the moment they break the cycle. Annabeth, playing Odysseus, is talked down from her hubris and grounded by her friends. Percy, playing Heracles, meets someone wronged by the original Heracles and rights his wrongs by refusing to go down the same selfish path as him. Monsters are reborn because they are--as the books explicitly call them--achetypes. These kids are stuck inside the cyclical nature of mythology because thats what happens to mythology, it gets retold over and over again. But these are the kids who have to live it. The series ends with percy being offered immortality and he rejects it because he wants to use his godly favor to force them to break their cycle of neglecting their kids. The series ends with a declaration that we cant keep letting this happen. The very first book offees the same choice. It ends with percy refusing to keep the head of medusa as a spoil of war, refusing his heroic reward. He lets his mother have the head and use it to kill gabe. Isnt that fucking crazy for a kids book? Gabe wasnt a Monster. He wasnt going to Turn to Dust and Disappear in a narratively convenient way. He was a living breathing mortal dude and percy and his mom killed him without remorse. Break the cycle of abuse!!!! Dont let this happen again!!!
