What if Luz wasn't given the book by her father, but by her mother. I think Camila thought it would be less painful to give Luz something else to hold onto, a piece of her father.

If not, my other theory is that Camila and Luz's father were big bookworms and nerds together, and that Luz's father did really leave her with some piece of him behind.
