SAY IT LOUDER FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK 🗣🗣🗣
I still get mad over the fact how badly they screwed up the girls in Naruto.
The only somewhat solid one in my opinion is definitely Konan, because she could still hold her weight against Obito, which really isn't a small feat. But let's start with Sakura.
Sakura is strong. Period. She came a long way and trained hard to get where she was at the end of the series (ignoring Boruto for obvious reasons.). People tend to forget that Sakura isn't from a major clan and doesn't have a sealed beast or fancy eyes or anything really. Sakura was supposed to be smart, compassionate but also the one to keep a cool head, compared to Narutos carelessness and Sasukes rage. I think the biggest mistake made was getting her together with Sasuke. Her character development would've been far more complete if she would have stopped chasing after someone that tried to kill her enough times. It would have been the ultimate grow up aspect for her; growing out of her childhood crush and not stopping to care about him, but respecting herself enough to stand her ground. Also Sakura 100% had the potential to be a Hokage and I will stand by that.
Hinata on the other hand upsets me in the long run. She deserved so much. Naruto's sudden interest came out of nowhere and not properly worked towards to in my opinion. Hinata deserved to be a kickass Ninja. She is the Byakugan Queen for christ sake. Don't make her another house wife. Do something interesting with her. Let her use her special eye technique more. I wanted to see more of her breaking out of her shell and taking initiative.
Did you know that Ino apparently had an affinity for fire? Yeah me neither. That's how underused she was. Only ever used her mind transfer jutsu. Ino was pretty much reduced to Sakuras rival for Sasuke and there to look pretty. I wanted to see more of Shikamarus and Chojis friendship. I wanted a supportive and kickass friendship between her and Sakura. Because non toxic female friendships are so extremely important. I wanted her to befriend Hinata properly and let the girls work together on her self esteem.
Tenten. I love Team Guy. They are without a doubt my favourite team. Tenten was so underused. She actually used a different style from most other ninjas that could have been greatly explored. For christ sake, give her one of the mist weapons to handle. She is a weapon expert. Cowards. Why did they suddenly make her a healer? I didnt get that at all. Make Neji a healer for christ sake- would have made for some rad character development- him trying to atone for all the bad things he did through healing instead of hurting. TL; DR Legendary swordsman Tenten and healer Neji please.
Karin. Oh Karin. You're like combining all the bad aspects into one character that had so much potential. But no. You had to thirst over an emo duck butt aswell. You were an Uzumaki. Show that you are one. At least tone down her jealously. Also healer trend continues again.
Temari is probably one of the better female characters. At least she got a proper romance in some sense, though she doesnt really need one. She was pretty cool during the 4th ninja war and deserved so much more screentime with her giant fan.
Konan like I said is my favourite one. Maybe because she was given the aspect of "She is in an evil organisation, she needs to be strong". I love her battle against Obito. Everything about her battle style is ethereal. It would've been kinda cool to see her on the good side as last Akatsuki as she was never really on board with the whole thing. Also not a healer finally. Plus kicked other Akatsuki's ass.
Most women in Shonen are love interests that can fulfill the male dream agenda in the most heteronormative way possible. It's a shame, truly, that that is what female characters mean to the creator. That focus on love and healing really damages the whole diversity aspect that allows us to create different and interesting characters. Most of them are pretty interchangeable with each other aswell, which is also a shame.
TL; DR. Diversity in female characters is much needed. So so so much. Please.
