One thing I would love for doctors to understand is that by the time a patient has been chronically ill for a number of years, they likely have many layers of medical trauma.

This can affect the way they come across in an appointment.

When my symptoms first started, I would be visibly distressed in doctors' appts when discussing them. I'm not anymore. Not because I'm not distressed (if anything, I'm more so) but because my understandable distress was pathologised and used as 'proof' I was just mentally ill.

So over the years I've become more businesslike in appts, to the point where my distress about my quality of life is so far from my mind that I can't even recall it when I'm talking to a doctor, never mind cry or anything. It's a trauma induced coping mechanism.

But this could have its own consequences. Doctors might assume my symptoms aren't that bad. Or my quality of life isn't as poor as I say it is. I worry that this influences their decisions just as much as my obvious distress did in the beginning.

We need trauma informed care.
