funny how there were so many rumors about tumblr shutting down for good and yet it has watched some of the biggest social media platforms die
Dear friends not in America don’t take this the wrong way but please don’t tell us to just read a book or go outside
This is proof we do not live in the land of the free
We are finally starting to realize how much power our government has
They have taken a platform of free speech and thought and expression away from us
A place we can get extremely up to date news from around the world
And they have taken it
Some of us are on here on tumblr or other platforms but loosing TikTok is proof the government doesn’t care about us
Say it’s for our protection all they want. If they wanted to protect our data or us as people they woudl have banned Facebook and all other social media a long time ago bc that stuff gets breeches all the time

even if tiktok comes back it wont be the same. it will probably have new content restrictions, rules, terms of service, and will probably be made worse for the consumer and better for advertisers. this is the end of an era
I touched on this in my paper that discusses how the changing social media landscape will effect disaster management, but one of the biggest changes as we move forward is that we are not seeing the embracing of the changing landscape on a wide scale.
And what I mean by that is many websites still have a Twitter button or a place to put your Twitter link in your profile. You're damn lucky if you can find an icon set that has Bluesky, forget it if you want Threads or Mastodon. Want to add some links to your other profiles? Well half the built in options are dead now.
Social media sites are no longer integrated with the rest of the web, they are isolated pockets. It used to be each site had it's Thing but then they all decided they need to have All The Things, and that, I think, is when the break really started to happen. The internet stopped being "build your own experience" and became "take the experience we give you." The lack of anyone bothering to try and integrate things across the board shows that.
As worried about tiktok propaganda as people are, THIS is the kind of propaganda i'm concerned about.
The worst part about TikTok being gone is not being able to watch tiktoks about tiktok being gone.

so when trump takes office on monday and “saves tiktok” with a 90 day extension on the tiktok ban decision, then during that period mark zuckerberg “suddenly” decided to buy tiktok and have meta absorb it, then what.
trump created this problem when he introduced the tiktok ban in his first term and he’s going to take credit for “solving” it now. the tiktok ceo made a video thanking trump for “understanding the app” then the error message says we are grateful to trump for working with us on this ?? AND he’s invited to sit front row at the inauguration??? oh also new facebook/tiktok integrations popping up today ???
