Nina Mae McKinney and Emmett âBabeâ Wallace in a scene from the short 1936 film, âThe Black Network.â McKinney (1912-1967) was the first Black performer to be signed to a long-term contract by a major Hollywood studio (A five year contract with MGM in 1929). Emmett âBabeâ Wallace (1909-2006) was an actor, singer and composer who had a lot of juicy (and sometimes uncredited) parts in vintage Black movies, most notably as âChick Baileyâ in âStormy Weatherâ in 1943. Ms. McKinney is featured in the womenâs edition of âVintage Black Glamourâ and Mr. Wallace is in the menâs edition, âVintage Black Glamour: Gentlemenâs Quarters (May 2016).

To a drummer, solid time is everything. Itâs possibly the single most important role we have when playing behind the kit. But how can we develop our time BESIDES working with a metronome?
In this article, Iâll address six common problems that can cause drummers to play with bad time, and Iâll offer specific action steps that you can take in order to fix each of these problems.
PROBLEM #1 - ADRENALINE HAS GOTTEN THE BEST OF YOU.
During a performance, has it ever felt like all of the songs seem SUPER slow? Itâs most likely because your adrenaline or nerves shift the way that you PERCEIVE tempo. This can cause all sorts of timing issues for drummers.
The good news is that you donât have to just experience this phenomenon on the gig; itâs possible to practice playing with adrenaline away from the stage as well.
SOLUTION #1 - THE âDRUM AND RUNâ EXERCISE
During your next practice session:
1)Â Play any groove youâd like, but play along with a metronome.
2)Â After 1-2 minutes, get up and run around your building 2-3 times. The idea is to increase your heartrate so that youâre almost out of breath.
3)Â Come back into the room and immediately play the same groove you played earlier, along with your metronome.
What do you notice in this moment? Does the groove feel slower now?
By practicing this way, you can prevent adrenaline from getting the best of you during the performance.
PROBLEM #2 - ONE OF YOUR LIMBS ARE INCONSISTENT.
Are your backbeats ALWAYS placed on the same part of the pulse, or are some backbeats slightly late? When you crash, does your bass drum foot line up exactly with your right hand or is it a little different each time?
Itâs these types of subtle inconsistencies that can cause significant fluctuations in solid time-keeping.

Beautiful.
How to Survive A Mass Shooting
Know your exits whenever going someplace new
Practice situational awareness
If you believe an attack is imminent or under way, alert others around you
If a shooting occurs evacuating the area should be the priority
Fighting back or sheltering in place are distant second options but may be necessary
If you choose to fight back look for an opportunity where the attacker is distracted or reloading
If you decide to fight back, alert other bystanders if possible
If you choose to shelter in place find something solid (preferably concrete) that you can hide behind - if it canât stop a bullet, itâs not protecting you

*Â If youâre willing to accept the risk of being shot (especially if youâre a person of color) by a cop in addition to the risk of being shot by the bad guy, and are properly trained, you should take action against a mass shooter. If youâre unwilling to accept reality and irrationally expect perfection from people struggling to do the right thing in the worst situation theyâll probably ever face, keep your distance and only worry about yourself and your family.
