It's for a drawing
Okay so sometimes prisons will let people (as far as I understand) have some sort of religious comfort object or something. Dream was allowed a single mercy by being able to keep his mask. He hides it the best he can when people came to visit, but one day quackity finds it. He doesn’t like that Dream can still hide things from him, even in prision. Perhaps he hangs it on his wall, perhaps he does worse 👀
Oh poor c!Dream :(
warnings: prison arc (pre 14.09 and yes there is a difference), torture mention, dehumanization, starvation (mentioned)
/rp /dsmp
It’s been months.
Or at least that’s what it feels like for the only prisoner of Pandora’s Vault.
It may have been longer. It may have been shorter. Dream wouldn’t know either way.
He began his day (or at least what he assumes is a day) like always - by waking up and trying to wash and dress his wounds from Quackity’s last visit.
Dream tries to do it before falling asleep if he can, but last night’s session left him unconscious by the end.
And now there he is - sitting against the obsidian wall and trying not to think about his situation. About the sharp edges of the wall and the floor. About how hungry he is. About how he is just waiting for the next visit. About how it is his only source of entertainment (if he can even call it that). About how he is just surviving, not living.
But does he have any other choice? It’s not like he can change anything. He has no allies. No friends. No family. No one cares about him. No one cares that he is being tortured.
They all know Dream. They know what is happening. They approve.
The voice sounds very similar to Quackity. He doesn’t want to believe it.
You will understand one day.
He hopes he doesn’t.
He reaches up to tug his mask down.
…
It’s not there.
The mask is gone.
How?!
Where?!
When?!
He looks around frantically. It must be somewhere close! The cell is not big enough for it to be hidden well!
He checks everywhere. Throws the books out of the chest. Digs into the water.
It’s not here.
Where is it?!
Dream is beginning to panic now. How is he supposed to face Quakcity now?! His face has always been too expressive. He has to hide it. He has to.
The lava falls down.
And there he is.
The visitor.
Sir.
No. Not sir. (Not yet.)
Quackity.
With shears in one hand. And… his mask.
(Dream doesn’t get the mask back. He does get to hold it for a bit. Right before Quackity tells him to choose: burn the mask or lose a finger.
He watches the lava for a long time afterwards.)

c!Dream who thinks c!Techno left him behind for all those months, who thinks he is not coming back
c!Dream who tries to get to his old base, tries to find any safe spot, any place where c!Sam and c!Quackity won't find him
c!Dream who is found by someone and taken back to Pandora anyway
c!Dream who gives up
TW: injuries, pandoras vault stuff, sad stuff
They escape was hard and unforgiving. Moving around with several infections and open wounds wasn't the easiest thing after all. Dream's broken bones weren't helping with that.
But when his feet touched the ice cold water around the prison in the middle of the night, something changed.
He got out.
He escaped Pandora's Vault.
Alone.
At first he was proud, escaping the most securest prison ever built was a task which was set up for failure, but he did it. He was Dream, the Dream after all.
He did it!
He did it...
Alone...
He had waited for Technoblade. It seemed like he had waited years for his... associate. He didn't want to call him friend. It would hurt too much.
Dream dragged himself through the water, body shaking from the cold, the unusual temperature.
He had promised. Technoblade had promised that they were not out of option... recalling the event Dream had to laugh.
Technoblade was right, because he hadn't been out of option. But Dream had been...
With long hanging head he pulled himself out of the water, collapsing on the sandy floor. His arms were trembly but he didn't know whether from exhaustion or from the cold.
Angrily he hit the ground with his fist, ignoring the blood which was already covering his hand.
Why did Technoblade leave him behind? Did he forget about him? Didn't he care?
Dream wiped away the tears forming in his eyes. He had been right all along. Trusting people will only get yourself hurt.
The only one he should care about was himself.
WIth a big sigh, he stood up, legs nearly giving out under him again. There was no time to cry, he had to get away from the prison, trying to find a place where he was safe from everyone else.
He had thought that would be with Technoblade when he suddenly disappeared. But he was wrong, like so many times in his life.
Maybe his secret bases are still standing.
What Dream didn't see were the commotion at the entrance of the prison. Technoblade screaming at Sam, who was yelling back with the same energy. Something about an escape, something about Dream.
Dream didn't see the concerned look in Technoblade's eyes when he hurried away from the prison, eyes ripped open, looking around wildy, begging to find a bit of orange in the black night.
He didn't hear the worried yells for his name.
He didn't hear the begging of his associate, his friend, to come out of hiding that he was safe now.
He didn't see Phil putting his hand on Technoblade's shoulder, shaking his head.
He didn't see the two walking away, back to their home without him.
For he was curled up in a heap of blankets in a dark bunker of his, beggin to feel the comfort of the Piglin's cloak one last time.
he's a killer just for fun, fun, fun, fun...
What are all the lessons in Itwall?
:) well you see...
itwall is just a conversation between cdream's doubts and the universe. in order to convince him to stay in the arctic, i knew i'd have to appeal to dream's sense of logic and convince him that it was his most reasonable option, so i designed the plotline like an argument that would dispel his anxieties about staying. the argument goes something like this:
techno & philza: we want you to be safe. (but does safety mean being trapped?) phil: no, you are never trapped. but we should be prepared. if you're in danger, hide and let us fight. (i don't want them to fight for me. when i'm in danger, i'll run.) circumstance: you will run into the forest and get frostbite. techno and philza will need to save you. (fine. when i'm in danger, i'll hide.) circumstance: hiding works. (but i don't want to be a burden.) techno & philza: we love you, and you aren't a burden. (okay, but i can't trust them to tell me if i'm being a bother. they wouldn't tell me.) kristin: i know my husband, and you aren't bothering him. (but i need to fix the server) kristin: no, you don't. (but sapnap will listen to me if i try hard enough) sapnap: i won't. and ultimately that's where the title comes from. dream has a series of lessons to learn that all teach him the value of staying in the place where he feels most at peace, where people will care for him, and where he isn't a burden.
C!Dream with decapitation scars hc (rivals duo as well)
c!Tommy cut off his head with an axe before he was put in prison. c!Q definitely considered it but realized it would cause issues, so he did stuff like slit Dream’s throat as deep as he could. I’d imagine Dream has one large ugly scar around his neck, straight in the middle and then a bunch of smaller more delicate looking ones on different parts of his neck/upper chest. Q isn’t out for blood, he’s out for revenge. He knows that dull blades make for ugly cuts, so sharp knives in his bag it is. Dream is broken enough from the torture but the bloodloss from those makes him sob. For Q it’s no longer about the book. The book is Dream’s and Q has decided to go after Dream’s very soul in order to get the damn book. So Dream is rescued by c!Techno with a huge scar around his neck that c!Phil assumed was from the prison. The smaller ones Techno notices while they were in prison together. Techno doesn’t say a word about those ones to anyone, but he definitely knows it was Q’s doing. So Techno finds Dream turtlenecks and neck warmers to cover them. Dream deserves some dignity afterall, Q couldn’t take that from him.
Stages?
👀
STAGES IS MY BABYYYYY i love writing about grief and loss of self, and how to cope with that. C!Dream is perfect for that type of analysis. It started bc I really wanted a way to explore dream and bads relationship and their similarities. They both lost their families and both believe that what happened to them was mostly self inflicted. there's a lot to explore there. And of course I love rivals duo and also wanted to write a scenario where techno isn't able to repay the favor. And, ya know, healing and growing together is such a good trope.
I already have the first chapter posted on my AO3 but I've written so much for this fic but still never managed enough to finish another full chapter ughhughhuh. I've also posted some of this fic here but there are so many nuggets I've written that I'd love to share (sorry all my excerpts are so long 😭😭)
"I can barely walk, I can't fight-! I'm helpless. I'm at everyone's mercy and I hate it." His hands are shaking, the pencil moving like a record needle— up and down and up and down— in his weak grasp. Dream wants to steady it but can't, hasn't been able since Quackity's first visit, and he hates that too. His body isn't his anymore. It's a malfunctioning tool, but there's no fixing it. No quick repair. There's no fixing him.
Nothing can cure him, not potions, not time, not XD. He's broken, plain and simple. And all that's left is crossed wires.
A hand lays over his own and Dream looks up into Techno's eyes. His hand still tremors underneath the warm grasp, but it hurts less, now.
"You're not helpless, Dream. You're not. You're just changed, and I know that hurts. And I know I can't fix that but let me make it a little easier for you." His voice chokes on the last syllable, the emotion making it crack.
Sweat pools on the back of Dream's neck as he quickly adverts his eyes. A million thoughts run through his head, seeing Techno's care so plainly on display. He can't bring himself to pull away though.
"I don't get it." It's an admission he wouldn't make normally, but Dream wants to understand at least this about Techno, if nothing else. "You've more than repaid the favor, you don't owe me anything anymore."
"Yes, I do." Techno says, so quietly Dream is half convinced he didn't hear it at all, before Techno continues as if he hadn't said anything to begin with. "When are we just going to admit we're friends, Dream? We can be that to each other, you know."
Now, he does pull away, just barely. Their hands touch still, if only slightly, and the contact burns.
"Fine," Techno speaks, not with anger or frustration. "I'm doing it because I'm selfish. I like having you around, and keeping you healthy makes that easier. Not to mention you're skinny enough to be one of Phil's scarecrows. We can hang you out in the fields and you'd scare all the crows off, nice and easy. That's why I'm doing this, for the good of my crops."
Dream furiously ignores Techno's smug smile when that draws a laugh out of him, but it doesn't get rid of the pit in his stomach. Dream knows what happens to his friends.
He doesn't want that for Techno.
the real sad thing is wil never needed to do anything big, extravagant or legendary to ever make his father proud. idk maybe to just exist was enough imao
absolutely. cphilza would be very proud to have raised a peaceful, artistic son. phil was never as explicit about entering retirement as techno was (probably because, as an immortal, that doesn't really mean anything) but he was happy to hunker down with his retired friend and presumably stay there until he inevitably outlived him. some of the most explicit on-screen advice we see cphilza give cwilbur is how to give a good apology. this isn't a man who wanted to raise a warmonger.
