“she seems to like you,” jake mused at the girl petting layla, a soft smile on his face as he shut the wooden door behind him.

“of course she likes me; i’m her favorite of us two,” she retorted, peeling her eyes from the dog in her lap to the prince that had walked into the bedroom.

snorting at his lover’s words, jake came up behind the plush couch that rested near a roaring fireplace, setting a hand on her shoulder and bending slightly to meet her eyes. “i wouldn’t be so sure about that, love.”

opening her mouth to argue, she was cut off when jake called layla’s name, smirking as the dog immediately jumped off the sofa and came running in his direction.

jake shrugged with a cheeky smile as he disappeared behind the couch to pet layla, leaving the girl to shift in her seat and drape herself over the back. “you are quite annoying, i hope you’re aware of that.”

looking up, jake continued to grin as he stood and hopped over the back of the couch in one swift motion. “i am aware, thank you very much.”

the girl shook her head at him, but curled against his side after he had rid himself of his coat and boots. “you’re extremely lucky i love you, or i would’ve kicked you out of this castle and stolen layla from you.”

“oh, i’m sure you would. but i think layla would drive you mad without me here. you’d just end up coming back to me in the end,” jake said, his head tilted to the side as he looked into the blazing fire.

scoffing, the girl rested her head on his shoulder, moving against his frame. “i don’t believe i’d come running back to you.”

“you’ve already done it once, what would stop you from doing it again?”

“ok, that was one time-”

“still happened though,” jake recalled as he met her eyes. she didn’t say anything back, only glared playfully at her fiance.

“oh don’t look at me like that, you know it’s true,” jake said as he wrapped an arm around her and pulled her closer. “now get some rest, i told you not to stay up for me.”

“but i wanted to see you,” his partner whispered as she shut her eyes, her cheek falling against his chest.

smiling, jake kissed her brow, whispering a soft “i know” before resting his head on her own, letting his thoughts wander as his eyes returned once again to the fire.

Yang Jungwon was usually good at sleeping through the night, especially when he had you tucked into his embrace. But his eyes fluttered open, a soft groan falling from his lips, as he saw the rusted night sky outside the bedroom window. 

Careful to not bother you—who slept so soundly on his chest—he reached for his phone on the nightstand. With a quick double tap, the time 00:01 flashed in his light-sensitive eyes. 

Relief befell him at the sight of the time; plenty of time left to snooze. 

A small smile graced his face as he tightened his hold around you, ready to settle in for a hearty eight or so more hours. He could feel himself start to relax and match his heartbeat with yours… slower and slower… until—

The thought popped into his head like the flicking of a light switch. 

"Honey," he crooned to you softly. 

You stirred. "Mm?" Your hand gripped onto the fabric of his T-shirt, and Jungwon cooed at how cute you were. Perhaps he had just disturbed your peace, but it was all for good reason. 

He pressed his lips to the crown of your head. "It's your birthday. Happy birthday, my love."

The words hadn't quite sunken into your half-sleep conscience, but you murmured a "thank you" to him anyway. 

He chuckled, biting a smile back. Then he gently cupped his hand over the back of your head and closed his eyes. When he awoke later, he would happily say it to you again.
