That rabbit/hare post is messing me up. I’d thought they were synonyms. Their development and social behavior are all different. They can’t even interbreed. They don’t have the same number of chromosomes. Dogs, wolves, jackals, and coyotes can mate with each other and have fertile offspring but rabbits and hares cant even make infertile ones bc they just die in the womb. Wack.
I said it in the notes on the last post but I’m gonna say it again.
I’m married to someone with severe memory problems. Automation of household appliances & systems helps him a lot and helps me a lot because it reduces the number of things I have to keep in my brain at all times. I love doors that lock themselves, being able to schedule dog food being delivered, a thermostat I can manipulate from wherever. Beyond my little bubble it should be noted that voice controlled appliances can be really good for people with mobility concerns. Appliances that can measure and talk and remember little tasks can be such a blessing for people.
I will never forgive Amazon and Google for taking technologies that could be really helpful and weaponizing them, and fuck everybody who acts like its some kind of conspiracy theory that those devices are spying on you. You absolutely should be distrustful of those devices but just make sure you’re getting angry at the right people.
One thing I absolutely won't post on Tumblr is whether I agree with this or that military action on Israel. I talk about it on other spaces but never here - I don't want to get sucked into tumblr arguments with either anti-Zionists or Israel supporters and Israelis. And I would get into a lot of arguments definitely, as my positions broadly support Israel but also take issue with tons of actions during the war - some of which I think were criminal. I prefer to keep such arguments in less public spaces, like discord servers I trust. So I'm not going to comment here on the recent events of Rafah except to beg everyone to remember the common humanity of both Israelis and Palestinians.
The reduction gears and steam turbines under construction at the General Electric Plant, circa March 1942.
There are four sets of double reduction cross-compound geared turbines, with each turbine set driving a single shaft. “They offered almost 10-1 reduction to allow the turbines to run at much higher and more efficient rpm. These are some of the most critical components of the powerplant and one of the things which allowed long ranges in US battleships.“
Due to the date and the fact USS Iowa (BB-61) and USS Missouri (BB-63) were the only Iowa Class Battleships to receive General Electric gears and turbines, these are most likely for USS Missouri.
A man is shown deburring the edges of teeth with a file.
Note that they are double helix which eliminates axial thrust while providing the quieter running and increased strength of helically cut gears.

I suggest that we start using the term ‘creatives’ instead of ‘content creators’ for authors/artists/gifmakers/podficcers for a few reasons, and chief among them are these;
we can’t always be our most productive, but there’s a terrible trend of fandom folks feeling bad if they don’t have something new to post every few weeks
you’re still a creative person even if you aren’t creating something at a given time, for whatever reason
and something it’s taken me far too long to learn myself: making things is not the rent you pay to be part of a community
I feel like every writer knows that one person who can't understand that you won't write their ideas, you'll write yours
"Yes, that's an... interesting concept. It's not how I write, it's not the way I think. Write it yourself."
and of course the classic

And I unfollowed another person, a game creator I've been interested in. But this time it wasn't surprising, as it's only a more extreme version of what they said in 2021. I pretty much thought that account would say what they ended up saying; only they didn't open their mouth on it until today.
So far unfollowed two people over the war in Israel and Palestine. Thought that after the last conflict I had already sorted out who not to follow. At least none of them are mutuals, but one of them is a conlanger and linguist I've admired for so many years whose insights on PIE reconstruction have been of great interest to me.
