Located in the Northeast Atlantic, the Faroe Islands comprise 18 small islands, characterised by steep cliffs, tall mountains, narrow fjords – and a population of 50,000.

The Faroese language derives from Old Norse, which was spoken by the Norsemen who settled the islands 1200 years ago.

Through the centuries, the Faroese have defied the harsh nature and living conditions. Enduring today is a nation in which the living standard is one of the highest in the world. A highly industrial economy mainly based on fisheries and aquaculture continues to flourish, while a Nordic welfare model ensures everyone the opportunity to explore his or her own potential. Faroese maritime expertise is widely renowned and the Faroe Islands export seafood to all six continents.

Positioned strategically between Europe and North America, the Faroe Islands are only a couple of hours’ flight from the metropolitan centres in Northern Europe. Upon arrival, the scenery renders visitors a ravishing natural experience in a society with advanced infrastructure and digital networks.

Centuries of relative isolation have resulted in the preservation of ancient traditions that to this day shape life in the Faroe Islands. The unique mixture of traditional and modern culture characterises the Faroese society, constituting a strong sense of local community and an active outlook as a globalized Nordic nation.

A Dream Takes Flight! Today, Our Ingenuity #MarsHelicopter Became The First Aircraft In History To Make

A dream takes flight! Today, our Ingenuity #MarsHelicopter became the first aircraft in history to make a powered, controlled flight on another planet.

In a video captured by our Perseverance Mars rover, the helicopter is shown hovering above the Red Planet's surface. During this first flight, the helicopter climbed to an altitude of 10 feet (3 meters), hovered, and then touched back down on the surface of Mars.

More images and video to come...

Join us at 2 p.m. ET (18:00 UTC) for an analysis of Ingenuity’s first flight and what's to come:

Normal things a girl is supposed to think about?

To add on to everything said here, "normal" is not and will never be one singular condition for everybody. If people want to be "normal" and do what everyone else is, like have kids, that's their choice. If they don't want to be "normal", say if they want to travel the world in their 30s and 40s instead of raising children, or do things a so-called "different" way from everybody else, that's their choice.

If you want to have kids, that's great. That doesn't mean everybody shares your belief and it does not give you the right to shame people who say otherwise - and it goes both ways. If you don't want to have kids and do what you feel is right for you, great. Once again, that doesn't mean your opinion is the only one and you don't have the right the shame people who do want to have children.

No matter what the context, restricting or entirely removing autonomy and freewill will never end well for anybody involved.

TL;DR be someone you want to be, not what other people think you should be, and don't change your beliefs to win someone over. Ever.

stop telling your teenage daughters who say they don't want kids that they'll change their mind

Fighting for true “marriage equality” is “the right thing to do, isn’t it?” Morris said.

Ah yes, because we're all complaining about not being able to marry or fuck our siblings

‘Consensual incest’ should be decriminalized, advocates say
Consensual incest advocates are rooting for an anonymous New York parent who wants to marry their own adult child. Australian Richard Morris, who is pushing to change incest laws in about 60 countr…

What in the actual fuck?  This is why we can’t have nice things.  Next thing you know, this advocate will advocate for polygamy to be legal.  Ugh.

«At the Internet Archive, this is how we digitize a book. We never destroy a book by cutting off its binding. Instead, we digitize it the hard way—one page at a time. We use the Scribe, a book scanner our engineers invented, along with the software that it runs. Our scanning centers are located in universities and libraries around the world, from Boston Public Library to the University of Toronto to the Wellcome Library and beyond. Eliza is one of our fastest and most accurate scanners. Next she will execute quality control checks and fix any errors. Then she ships the book back to our Physical Archive for long-term preservation. Now imagine this: scanners like Eliza have done this 2,000,000 times. That’s what it takes to provide you with a free digital library.» – Plus Internet Archive’s Modern Book Collection Now Tops 2 Million Volumes, by Chris Freeland, February 3, 2021

Herd Immunity Is The Idea That If Enough People Get Immunized Against A Disease, They’ll Create Protection

Herd immunity is the idea that if enough people get immunized against a disease, they’ll create protection for even those who aren’t vaccinated. This is important to protect those who can’t get vaccinated, like immunocompromised children.

You can see in the image how low levels of vaccination lead to everyone getting infected. Medium levels slow down the progression of the illness, but they don’t offer robust protection to the unvaccinated. But once you read a high enough level of vaccination, the disease gets effectively road-blocked. It can’t spread fast enough because it encounters too many vaccinated individuals, and so the majority of the population (even the unvaccinated people) are protected.
