A batch of Magnuses drawn for a live art demo about telling a story with character design that I did last year.
In the lecture portion of the demo, I was trying to demonstrate how to tell a story visually through a character, which is a very complex task, but I broke it down into three core elements: expression, posture/body language, and costume. These were my pre-drawn examples to show how each of those elements can function in isolation, and Magnus served as the example character.
obsessed with this panel. the insecurity, the underlying loneliness, vitriol, and jealousy. hoist calls out the rod squad because of their bombastic personalities together. he’s practically jealous of swerve. swerve who spent the last who knows how long on kimia as a simple metallurgist while hoist had his feet on the ground on earth serving directly under optimus prime himself. there are autobots who would give up their left arm to be him and yet he feels so under appreciated when talking to swerve. swerve is basically rod squad by proxy too he’s never chosen to go on any of the actual missions either he’s just friends with those that do.
i desperately wish we had more of this leading up to the mutiny to really feel just how distanced and slighted the rest of the crew felt because it’s not just megatron they opposed, or even rodimus for being a bad leader, they eagerly got rid of whoever they thought was attached to megatron and rodimus and never bothered asking them themselves if they would ever oppose megatron. i would love to see more of the quiet resentment boiling underneath that would make them so easily toss their friends overboard and more of the horror and guilt that came with realizing what they had actually agreed to.

Have you seen the Traffic Warlock from Tactical Breach Wizards? Sounds like a proper nemesis for the Road Wiz.
