First Aid’s obsession with the Autobrands seemed bizarrely out of place in terms of what his motivation would actually be to care so much about them that wasn’t just the idea that it would impress Springer, but actually its about his need to feel important.

When the audience is first introduced to First Aid he begins with saying, “I’m nobody special.” And goes on to list things he hasn’t done the would’ve gotten him recognized.

It’s an odd way to start what he believes will be his final recordings into the plague on Delphi and why he felt the need to stress that, but clearly it’s important enough to him to mark it down as the introduction in his final words.

This need to be important however manifests itself through his fascination with the Autobrands. When it comes to reading Wreckers Declassified, First Aid wildly romanticizes it, not just the action scenes but the emotional connections too, showing off between Rack n’ Ruin and Impactor or Impactor and Springer (regardless of how truthful it was). He sees their action as thrilling and to him reaffirms how important they are to the Autobots.

So when Springer asks for his help, he agrees, he’s finally got a chance to prove his importance with this secret mission. He takes it so seriously too it affects his work, but when he does finally accomplish his goal he’s portrayed with extreme enthusiasm, both in his dialogue (“This is brilliant!”) and his actions (“trembling fingers” and “raced upstairs”).

His need to feel important isn’t just with the Autobrands however, even when he’s repeatedly struck down over the idea of jump starting sparks he goes off on his own to do it himself; when he goes to chief medical officer and most infamous medic Ratchet, he’s told (again) no but he stresses that he can prove it, and he does; despite fading in the background First Aid clearly doesn’t feel the need to keep his head down and just do his work the same way Ambulon seems to.

He wouldn’t be the first of background Autobots to have a romanticized idea of how they could be important either, when first introduced, Wheelie is ecstatic to be going on an off world mission to prove himself after being looked over so many times. Pipes rams himself through a plague blockade warning to “be impulsive” on his first new planet experience because Drift said so.

All to say that First Aid’s need to be important, to matter, culminated in his obsession.
