i really wanted to use that new image they released to announce the tangled: the series comic for this fall as a wallpaper for my phone. i thought i might as well share!!!!
im rewatching the sundrop special and its still absolutely infuriating to hear them villainize varian so much, while casually claiming the kings actions as bad, but with good intentions. like bro. dude. the kings action of putting HIS family above everyone else kick started everything.

Can we just appreciate the back design for Raps coronation dress? I thought it was so clever and it would’ve been a nice touch if she actually wore it with her short hair. Also wooohoo SEASON 2!!
I’m not trying to excuse any of what Varian has done, but this scene definitely had me shouting “OH C’MON!” at the TV screen on his behalf. I know they were just having a “thank goodness everyone is safe” hug, but they’re having that family moment literally mere feet from where Varian is breaking down at the feet of his father’s encased body after his latest failure to save him.
NOT. COOL.
Something went wrong, Varian’s crushing under the weight of his failure, and he’s seeing his friends get their happily ever afters while ignoring him and his plight. If there’s a single scene that can summarize his journey to the dark side, this is it.
Hi 😀 ! Again, I'd like to say luv luv your work!! And I'd like to ask. If it's okay...I wanna know your headcannon about something? I'm curious on what kind of moment everyone's realization would be at Varian is "growing up". Like these little things like "what?! he's taller than me now?" I'd like to imagine it would be like a proud/cute/feel old moment for them haha.
Thank you so much! It’s always encouraging to get feedback!
I think noticing changes in Varian would be a bit more… tense. Like he was intimating enough as a small fry. I have no idea how long it will be before they see him again but if it’s going to be a while, they may very well come back to find him already looking different. I don’t imagine it would be a ‘feel old’ thing, I mean Rapunzel is only four years older than him. In modern day that would be like comparing a high school freshman to a senior or college freshman. Technically, Rapunzel is still a teenager too.
Plus, it wouldn’t be Varian if a new older design didn’t involve a dramatic reveal. :P Smol bean became tol beanstalk.
So here he still has angst but instead of the emotional outbursts of an early teen, it’s the cold bitterness of a late teen. Sorry if my handwriting can’t be read. XP
Out of everything from the Tangled series, this scene is hands down my favorite. It’s such a quiet, thoughtful moment and despite the fact that he never says a word, it tells us a lot about Quirin.
But mostly, it really cements that Quirin undeniably misses his wife and *loves* his son, so, so much. That little chuckle as he looks at Varian’s baby pic is so ‘That’s my boy’ it kills me.
This pleases me
I wasn’t gonna post this until later, but hey, it’s a special occasion!

Okay, you little shit, I’m going to explain all this nice and simple for you.
He fucking knows.
He knows that life sucks. He knows that his happy fantasyland isn’t real. That no one actually cares about the things he does.
Do you think he’s somehow stupid?
At some point, though, it just doesn’t make sense to be cynical anymore.
Because while everything might be shit, you’re only making yourself miserable at the end of the day by loudly complaining about it. Instead of doing this counterproductive, vindictive bullshit, try fixing things every once in a while? Maybe if you act like the person you want the world to be full of, it might actually improve? It certainly can’t hurt.
This is the primary reason I relate to David so deeply. It’s not always smart to be cynical, and it’s not always naive to be sentimental or optimistic. Leave the happy people alone, Max.
