god the palisades fire is going to get much worse before it gets better. if you're in a fire prone area, please have a plan for evacuation and please don't make parking your car in both lanes of the only evacuation route and leaving with your keys a part of that plan. this is agonizing to watch.
A significant wildfire, known as the Palisades Fire, erupted in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood of Los Angeles on Tuesday morning, January 7, 2025. Fueled by powerful Santa Ana winds with gusts reaching up to 100 mph, the fire rapidly expanded, leading to the evacuation of approximately 30,000 residents.
The blaze began around 10:30 a.m. near 1190 North Piedra Morada Drive and swiftly spread across the hillside. By 6:30 p.m., it had scorched over 2,921 acres with 0% containment, threatening more than 10,000 homes in the affluent Pacific Palisades area.

The rapid spread of the fire was exacerbated by the intense winds, which grounded firefighting aircraft and hindered containment efforts. The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) reported that the fire was advancing at a rate of about five football fields per minute.
Mandatory evacuation orders were issued for several zones, including LOS-Q0767, MAL-C111-A, MAL-C111-B, and others. Evacuation centers were established at the Westwood Recreation Center and El Camino Real Charter High School to accommodate displaced residents.

The fire also posed a threat to cultural landmarks, with the Getty Villa Museum’s grounds experiencing burning trees and brush. Additionally, Pacific Palisades Charter High School was confirmed to be on fire.
In response to the escalating situation, Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency, and President Biden, who was in Los Angeles for a separate engagement, pledged federal assistance to support firefighting efforts.
The combination of strong winds and dry conditions has created a perilous environment, with officials describing it as the worst possible firefighting scenario. Residents are urged to remain vigilant, adhere to evacuation orders, and stay informed through official channels as the situation continues to develop.

Sylmar fire evacuation orders
Anthony Hopkins, Anna Faris, Mandy Moore, Ricki Lake, Eugene Levy, Cary Elwes, Heidi Montage and Spencer Pratt, Billy Crystal, Paris Hilton, Diane Warren, James Wood, Adam Brody and Leighton Meester, Miles Teller, and Beyonce's mother Tina Knowles have all lost their homes.
Before anyone goes "Well, they're rich, who gives a fuck?" Here's the thing. Yes, they're rich--but that's precisely it! Their homes would've been likely the first to save… and they're burned down. That's how bad it is! If they're losing their homes it means the areas around there are not doing too well.
These fires are super-bad.
Doing the best we can, with what we got.
