Im going to answer this as someone who grew up closeted queer and trans in a very conservative place, as a scientist, as one hell of a neurotic person, and as the accidental leader of a strange internet cult. We arent humans because we are gay nor the other way around. We are gay, queer, different, diverse, unclassifiable, unlableable, baffling and strange because we are alive. Science has no fucking idea why we are that way, probably never will. We dont know why we are that way and probably never will. Existing as a spectrum, as everything we are, is the most utterly alive thing there could be. We are alive and therefore we are gay, it is inherently in its meaning, to exist is to differ, to create, to live in uncountable different, chaotic ways. Just like we arent just sad, or angry, or happy, we are often many of those at the same time and often we dont understand it or know. Being gay is like being everything else about being alive: uncertain, unique, chaotic, strange, baffering. We know nothing of very big things, we know nothing of very small things, and we barely know shit about things our size. The only thing we can do is love as messily, as undefinedly, as strangely as possible. Who fucking cares.

I wonder if chuuya’s parents ever stopped hoping he’d come back. if they still left the porch light on every night, just in case—so it wouldn’t be dark if he somehow wandered home. I wonder if they kept his room the same, sheets smoothed out like he’d be back any minute, his favorite stuffed animals still sitting on the bed like they’re waiting for him too. maybe his mom still buys the cereal and pasta he liked when she goes to the grocery store. maybe his dad never fixed the bathroom doorknob because he said he’d show chuuya how to do it since chuuya wanted to learn to use a drill. maybe they still set an extra place at the table on his birthday. maybe his toothbrush is still in the cup by the sink. maybe they leave the window cracked open in spring, just a little, like they used to when he said the air helped him sleep. I wonder if they ever stop living like he'll still walk through the door one day.
