Wishing you all a blessed Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus!
JOKE-OGRAPHY:
1. The Sacred Heart: In Catholic tradition, the month of June is dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a devotion which sees Jesus's heart as a symbol of God's boundless love for humanity. Moreover, the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus is being celebrated today (June 7th) this year.
2. Original Imagery: The Sacred Heart is depicted as a human heart wreathed by thorns (like Jesus's crown of thorns) and divine flames/light, with a bleeding wound in the side (a reference to Jesus's postmortem spear-wound), and topped off with a cross (for obvious reasons).
3. My Imagery: In this piece, I depict the Sacred Heart in three stages, separating the symbolism into simple parts and relating them to Jesus's Passion, death, and resurrection.
4. Wordplay: A few years ago, I was struck by the similarity between the words scared, scarred, and sacred, and knew I had to use them together for some kind of wordplay. I just didn't know what kind of wordplay would fit. I usually use my wordsmithing for dumb jokes, but this felt like it needed a different approach, so I waited and wondered until an idea finally hit me just in time for the Month of the Sacred Heart!
5. Fun-Fact: I think this piece marks the first time I've depicted Jesus crucified in Tomics. It's not in my usual style or tone, but that's because those are geared towards comedy, and this is meant to be reverent.
My adaptation of the God of Arepo short story, which was originally up at ShortBox Comics Fair for charity. You can get a copy of the DRM-free ebook here for free - and I'd encourage you to donate to Mighty Writers or The Ministry of Stories in exchange.
Again it's an honour to be drawing one of my favourite short stories ever. Thank you so much for the original authors for creating this story; and for everyone who bought a copy and donated to the above non-profits.
Ruby: You have GOT to see RoboCop, Penny! It's like my favorite film! It is SO GORY! like WAY gory than you'd expect! There's these government funded machines that just shoot innocent people! Like straight up gunning them down in the streets! But then it cuts to the government officials who approved it, and their just going on and on about how they're helping America, but then cuts back to the machines committing so many crimes! It's such a good satire of American hypocrisy! Oh, it's so GOOOOOOD, Penny! It's SO GOOD! What's YOUR favorite movie?!
Penny: ... um... I like... Muppets Treasure Island, Ruby...
Ruby: ...
Penny: ...
Ruby: ... I agree! That's such a GOOD movie! Tim Curry is GREAT as Long John Silver! He's such a joy to watch!
Penny: Oh. I didn't think you'd like this one as much since your favorite is so... R-rated.
Ruby: No, no, you need to judge movies based on what they're trying to do! One's trying to be cynical, the other's trying to be whimsical! And they both do a GREAT job! They're both VERY good!
Penny: Yeah! Yeah, that's a great way of looking at it!
Salem: WELL, MY FAVORITE MOVIE IS JURASSIC WORLD II!
Ruby: Oh, of course you'd pick a Chris Pratt film, you fucking normie!
Nora: I'm gonna make this family proud! And not just you guys, but that old painting of my ancestor in the attic.

Nora: I did it! I'm gonna be on TV!
Thor: Did you kill the others?
Nora: I shan't!
Thor: You must!
Nora: ...I'm gonna go talk to the idol in the basement.

Zeus: DID YOU KILL THE PAINTING?
Nora: This place is a nuthouse.
