Dear Students: as Spinster Aunt of Tumblr and sometime College Writing Instructor, I have unsolicited advice for you. Do sit down and have a cup of tea.
Writing is a learned skill.
Writing is hard.
Writing gets easier with practice.
The quality of your writing does not automatically reflect the quality of your ideas.
By the same token, a critique of your writing is not the same thing as a critique of your ideas.
(I’m putting that in bold because I think it’s very important; I have seen lots of creative, insightful ideas hidden in bland or unclear prose.)
Essay prompts are designed to help you.
Office hours are designed to help you. (If your teachers don’t have office hours, it’s probably because they cannot afford to. It’s a long, sad story.)
Time spent with your own ideas is always worthwhile.
Time spent revising your own writing is always worthwhile.
Go forth and conquer! Send your ideas out into the world! And remember: writing is a learned skill. Writing is hard. Writing gets easier with practice. Oh, and tea helps.

My friends, some of you might already know this. Especially if you live in the EU. In case you don’t know what’s going on, here’s a lil summary:
There’s a provision called Article 13 mandating that everything that’s uploaded to the internet should be monitored and deleted if it seems to violate Copyright. Sounds like a good idea; no one wants their content stolen, right? Problem is, this requires filtering systems which small online platforms won’t be able to provide. So they most likely will have to shut down. This would lead to a very restricted version of the internet, where only big platforms would have the chance to exist. Plus sharing gifs, memes, fan art, or remixes would be prohibited because of copyright. It wouldn’t make a difference if you link your source of inspiration, it would simply be illegal.
If you want further information, just use google. Or take a look at this neat webiste saveyourinternet.eu (there are different languages avaible, just click on one of the bubbles in the upper right corner of the webiste to chose another language) For more in depth information you can find more resources here.
Yesterday (20 June) the Legal Afairs Committee (juri) voted with a 15:10 majority in favour of Article 13 (x). Here’s a list of the Members of the European Parliament who voted in favour. But there’s still a chance of the European Parliament plenary to stop Article 13. The plenary will take place on July 4-5.

i never talk about these things but i can’t remain silent.
i know tumblr doesn’t give a SHIT when things happen in countries outside the “most popular ones” (such as the usa & england). it’s true, don’t lie to me. y’all don’t give A FUCK. not every issue and problem in said countries gets the appropriate exposure but in general shit shows up on the news WORLD FREAKING WIDE. you set up donations, you help out, your spread the word, you say “pray for x”……
southern europe is burning.
my country is burning.
people are dying - at home, on the road, trying to run away, in their cars.
yesterday my country had 300 active fires.
people are losing EVERYTHING they own.
i have a friend that is on a train right now passing through places that have been burnt to the ground and she says the smoke is so intense it’s getting inside the train and she can barely breathe.
and yet, even though several people (myself included) have been trying to bring awareness to what has been happening in southern europe… what we get from most of you, those not part of the countries suffering, is silence. we don’t ask for money, we don’t ask for shit other than a reblog to spread awareness… something you can delete in 24/48hrs if you wish.
i don’t know what to tell you. i’m angry. i’m frustrated. i’m disappointed. i feel like i’m screaming into the void. “a reblog does nothing” - you know that’s a damn lie, you know exposure always helps, you know people start paying attention when posts on social media become popular. my country in particular is a small one, we get ZERO exposure. y’all are only starting to figure out we even fucking exist bc of the shit we’ve been winning lately.
but hell, if the EU doesn’t give a shit, why should some user on tumblr dot com?
again, i don’t know what to tell you so i’ll let the images speak for themselves:
