šŸ“ŗ How Anyone Can Save Video Game History | Preserving Play

Preserving Play is a documentary web series that follows those doing the work, preserving video game history. Through this series I hope the viewer will learn more about preservation, know why it's important, and get involved.

Preserving Play 1 follows Andrew Czudak of the Hitsave! nonprofit, as he explores how he got into video game preservation and how there's room for anyone to get involved as well!

Riveting

Today I had a dream that I was heisting a multimillionaire’s skyscraper.

I and some friends of mine walk into the lobby of a giant skyscraper. It looks very expensive. There is a mall section, office section, living quarters and even an airport??

We were a group of around 10-15 people with one objective get to the super secured vault in the dungeons under the skyscraper and steal valuables from it.

Before starting our quest we went on one of the last floors of the skyscraper. In a very luxurious apartment we had a meeting with an old lady. She was the mother of the millionaire. Upon entering we saw that she was very ill and maybe was near her death. There were guards in her apartment and when she saw us she asked them to leave us alone. After that she told us that in her son’s vault there were dozens of documents with which he was blackmailing a lot of people and evil plans. It happened that she was the one who hired us to do the heist. She wanted to show the world what her son was.

Our group went towards the lower levels of the skyscraper, in the mall part, and waited there until it got dark. Then we took the staff stairs and went even lower to the underground levels.

When we exited the staircase we saw a corridor that looked like the interior of a mall. There was hole that went down almost as if it was infinite.(you know the holes that are inside the malls like shop on the one side shop on the other hole in the middle so you can see the lower floors this what I’m talking about) There were some construction sites in the corridor where we were and there was one just before the entrance to the vault.

We were slowly making our way to the vault. When we heard speaking. Two girls from the staff were checking and locking doors. Our group split and runs for side corridors. I and like 5 of my friends find ourselves in the a small corridor-like 4 metres- that looks like a hotel corridor. It is a little lower than the one in which we were before, so we all laid on the ground so the staff couldn’t see us.

Unfortunately we were seen. An alarm was raised and this meant that our group needn’t hide any longer. We sprang out and almost everyone ran towards the vault. I went to one of the girls that raised the alarm and asked her what had she done. She answered that the alarm will show the guards on the ground floor which exits to guard. I was confused until I heard a voice from the speakers saying ā€œTo all the guards guard the exits marked with emergency exit signsā€. Then I saw that every exit, even the elevators were marked with emergency exit. I knew we were cooked but we had a mission to complete.

The girls from the staff took the elevator and then we compromised it so it couldn’t go down. This would buy us some time. I took a look at how the breaking in the vault was going we were almost tho the half point. 10 people working on the vault and 3 guarding.

From nowhere four guards from the skyscraper appeared. One of them kicked me in the back and I almost fell in the giant hole. I turned back and engaged in hand to hand combat. This is when I realised that the two other guys that were guarding our group were Hawkeye and Black widow???

The three of us fought the four guards. Black widow kicked one in the big hole and while two were trying to escape the last one fighting with Hawkeye and was winning. I jumped and pushed him over but oops now he was choking me. We stood up he still holding me. Then Hawkeye threw me two knives he took from the other guards. I kicked the bad guy and then when he was a little further I threw both the knives hitting him in the eyes. He fell dead. We put him in the second elevator and sent him up as a message.

Then Black widow suggested that we should go find the others because they could disrupt our plans. Hawkeye stayed on guard while the others were almost done with the vault.

We went running towards the two guards and see them running in what looked like a duty free shop. We lost them from our sight. Because we had no weapons (the two knives we left in the guard) Black widow suggested burning the shop instead of going in and risking our lives.

Before I could say anything we were running and apparently we went to the airport because we were in an actual duty free shop that was busy. We bought a ginormous bottle of liquor and a lighter (this was like 200€) and then we went down to where the vault was. (I have no idea why the people at the airport didn’t stop us)

We were going towards the place where we last saw the guards when…

My alarm rang.

Lots of thoughts recently. Everything feels plastic.

I could go on and on about why all that AI "art" is bad. I could mention theft, lack of creativity, it's impact on the work field and environment, but countless people have already said all that. I wanted to touch on something that to me is the most utterly wrong about all of it.

Art is more than just something pretty to look at or listen to. It's therapeutic. It's a form of communication. A tool for human connection. It's a pure, human need.

The Internet Archive Needs Your Help.

The Internet Archive needs your help.

A coalition of major record labels has filed a lawsuit against the Internet Archive—demanding $700 million for our work preserving and providing access to historical 78rpm records. These fragile, obsolete discs hold some of the earliest recordings of a vanishing American culture. But this lawsuit goes far beyond old records. It’s an attack on the Internet Archive itself.

This lawsuit is an existential threat to the Internet Archive and everything we preserve—including the Wayback Machine, a cornerstone of memory and preservation on the internet.

At a time when digital information is disappearing, being rewritten, or erased entirely, the tools to preserve history must be defended—not dismantled.

This isn’t just about music. It’s about whether future generations will have access to knowledge, history, and culture.

Sign our open letter and tell the record labels to drop their lawsuit.Ā
