bnha/mha, my criticisms.

the order in which i put them does not imply I think some of these issues are worse or not as bad as others, it's just the order I think of them in.

1- bakugou katsuki. a bully who doesn't change, but gets worse. from suicide baiting, to attempted murder, and is consistently forgiven and encouraged by every character in the entire story and the fandom.

2- the sexism in the story and fandom. (I went on a whole rant about this but I don't want to write too much about it because it enrages me)

3- fanservice. and the fact that when a male character is used for fanservice it empowers them (male characters uniforms being broken, exposing muscular chests, while female character's exposure does not flaunt their strength, just beauty and sex appeal, even teenagers.)

4- THE FACT THAT THE ONLY TRANS CHARACTERS ARE EITHER A VILLAIN WHO DIED OR A SIDE CHARACTER.

5- character annihilation for the sake of the plot. fuck the plot. characters matter more.

6- eraserhead's shitty teaching and how the fandom sees him as a good teacher or even a father figure.

7- quirkless discrimination and how unadressed it was and how izuku just got over it after a bit in high school even with his lifelong abuser there.

8- 1-A abandonning izuku and before that forcing him to come with them to UA, endangering those sheltering there.

9- Eri being rescued from those who used her only to be used in a different way but it's fine because using a child for her quirk is moral if the heroes do it. 10- bad representation of teenagers and children.

11- HORRIBLE representation of people of colour. mirko is an angry and violent character who is blunt in her words. Rock Lock is also an angry character, and any very reasonable suggestions and remarks he has are ignored. it is a very common trope to have black characters always be angry, and while yes they can be, it speaks a lot about the writer that your only black characters fit the stereotype.

11- idolisation of america.

12- endeavours "redemption"

13- lack of quirkless characters (what happened to 20% of the population?)

14- mineta's entire existence

15- shit pacing

16- shit plot

17- shit characters

Unintentionally toxic friend Kirishima. Kirishima is a good person but because he’s more of a follower type than a leader type despite setting a good example of how to be a positive and good person, by simply choosing to be friends with Bakugo, he unintentionally made 1-A subconsciously accept any of Bakugo’s and Aizawa’s abuses, especially towards Izuku. Perhaps due to some situation like a temporary class transfer with 1-B or other classes/schools to foster good connections for a few weeks, the 1-A students just stop interacting with Bakugo and seem a lot better until they come back together. And then they start arguing legitimate concerns against Bakugo.

I mean like... yes? I can see it. Kirishima who is so convinced things are fine, completely oblivious to how Midoriya flinches. I mean Bakugou is so manly and cool and like Aizawa is the teacher right?

However after an injury, Aizawa is temporarily out of the classroom (and this time has to stay out) letting a new teacher in who pegs Bakugou as a bully and Kirishima as an oblivious follower. They then make it clear the truth about Bakugou because the kids honestly don't seem to realize it.

My Hero Academia is the first series ever where the main character get throw in the sideline so much he is not the main character anymore for another character. Like holy shit wtf man. I am still struggling to understand the ending despite rereading the entire time. There are rushed endings but my god at least the author in rushed endings do give him some of respect to main character. In MHA, it is nothing

When it comes to shonen anime and manga (i say shonen because that's where i have seen, it mainly happen tbh)

Heck, this is a common thing to the point that there are YouTube videos based on showing it. Take, for example, this👇.

My Hero Academia Is The First Series Ever Where The Main Character Get Throw In The Sideline So Much

In this case, you kinda get the obvious, which is the main character : izuku midoriya and the one who stole the show : katauki bakugo.

See here is the thing a lot of the time mangakas due to the competitive and toxic industry they are in will prirotise and parade the fan favourite character as that's what gets them money. While you can argue that this may not be true for every series, you have to admit that it's weird that just right after bakugo started getting popular after the sports festival arc he also ended up getting a lot more screentime and that in my own opinion is due to the money that bakugo can bring into the series.

Now add this and combine it with the fact that horikoshi has stated that his favourite character is also bakugo katuski, and then you get well a certain mixture (unpleasent to say the least)

My Hero Academia Is The First Series Ever Where The Main Character Get Throw In The Sideline So Much

Due to this combination, the focus of the story shifting to bakugo makes sense while izuku becomes an accessory piece to the story that the author uses to vaguely delve into the intracies he built in his story.

I wasn't particularly surprised by the ending as the treatment of the izukus character and the way the stories themes were being handled were already quite poor from the beginning of the bakugo vs. izuku 2.0 fight, meaning that my expectations were low.

There are various posts talking about the characters' assassination that izuku has been through, and honestly, I agree heck I was one of them.

Aside from Muzan and maybe Obani, this is so out of character for giyuu and especially sanemi.

𝒮cumbag kny men headcannons

Featuring : giyuu, sanemi, muzak, obanai

A/n : first post! (๑°ㅁ°๑)‼

Sanemi Shinazugawa

Sanemi thrives on chaos. He’s the type to start an argument out of nowhere just to see you upset, then walk away mid-conversation like your feelings don’t matter. If you follow him, he’ll hit you with, “Stop being so needy. I can’t deal with you right now.”

He intentionally makes you feel like you’re not enough. Compliments are rare, but criticism? Constant. “You’d look better if you lost a little weight” or “That outfit’s not doing you any favors.” He chips away at your confidence until you’re relying on him for validation.

He’ll flirt with other girls in front of you, not because he’s interested, but because he loves watching you squirm. When you finally call him out, he laughs and says, “Relax, it’s not like I’m cheating. You’re so insecure it’s pathetic.”

His jealousy is suffocating. He checks your phone when you’re not looking, questions every male friend you have, and accuses you of cheating over the smallest things. Yet he sees no issue with his own sketchy behavior.

When he messes up, he never fully apologizes. Instead, he’ll shift the blame onto you: “I wouldn’t have said that if you didn’t push me,” or “Maybe if you weren’t so annoying, I wouldn’t have to act this way.” It’s always your fault in his eyes.

---

Giyuu Tomioka

Giyuu is emotionally unavailable to the point where it feels like you’re dating a wall. You’ll pour your heart out, hoping for some kind of response, and all you’ll get is a blank stare or a dismissive “I’ll think about it.”

He keeps you in a constant state of uncertainty. One day, he’s soft and caring, holding your hand like he’s afraid to lose you. The next, he’s cold and distant, treating you like a stranger. You’re always waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Cancelling plans is a habit for him, but what makes it worse is the way he doesn’t even try to make it up to you. “Something came up” is all he’ll say, leaving you alone and wondering if you’re even a priority.

He has a way of making you feel like you’re overreacting. If you try to confront him about his behavior, he’ll sigh and say, “Why do you always make things so complicated?” as if your hurt feelings are an inconvenience to him.

When things get tough, he doesn’t fight for the relationship. Instead, he’ll pull away, making you feel like it’s your job to fix everything. And if you can’t? He’ll quietly let the relationship crumble, acting like he was never part of the problem.

---

Muzan Kibutsuji

Muzan doesn’t see you as a person; he sees you as property. He controls every aspect of your life—what you wear, who you talk to, even where you go. If you push back, he smirks and says, “I’m just looking out for you. You’d be lost without me.”

He manipulates you into thinking you’re the problem. If you catch him in a lie, he won’t deny it outright. Instead, he’ll twist the situation to make you feel guilty for even questioning him. “I only lied because I knew you’d overreact.”

He disappears for days without a word, leaving you anxious and overthinking. When he finally shows up, he acts like nothing happened, dismissing your concerns with a cold, “I don’t owe you an explanation.”

His flirtations with other people are deliberate. He enjoys making you jealous, loves seeing the insecurity in your eyes. If you confront him, he’ll scoff and say, “They mean nothing to me. You’re the one making it a big deal.”

When he knows he’s pushed you too far, he’ll reel you back in with over-the-top gestures: expensive gifts, romantic dinners, whispered promises of change. But it’s all a facade to keep you trapped in his cycle of manipulation.

---

Obanai Iguro

Obanai is sneaky to the core. He hides things from you, deletes messages, and keeps his phone locked at all times. If you ask why, he’ll act offended, snapping, “Why don’t you trust me? You’re always looking for something to be mad about.”

He tears down your self-esteem with backhanded compliments. “You’re pretty, but you’d be stunning if you fixed your hair” or “I love you, even if you’re not perfect.” His words stay with you, eating away at your confidence.

He’s incredibly possessive. He doesn’t just dislike you hanging out with other people—he actively sabotages it. He’ll pick fights before you leave or guilt-trip you into staying home. “I just don’t understand why you’d rather be with them than me.”

When he’s upset, he doesn’t tell you what’s wrong. Instead, he sulks and makes passive-aggressive remarks until you’re begging him to talk. And when he finally does, it’s all about how you made him feel this way.

He uses his insecurities to manipulate you. “I know I’m not good enough for you, but I’m trying my best.” It’s designed to make you feel guilty for even considering leaving, even though he’s the one who’s toxic.

Ironically, Aizawa's expulsions would make sense if UA wasn't a Japanese school. While dropouts, transfers, and kicking students out of the Hero course for not meeting standards would legitimately be a thing, in fact, some schools would probably want to have a student who made into the Hero Course but have other issues at hand. The problem is that since UA is in Japan and is a Japanese school, the cultural context about expulsions and the black mark is fundamentally a serious liability and business in Japan compared to the west. Having a black mark in Japan is enough to prevent someone from getting a normal job and MHA Japan would not have enough time to develop away from this mentality, thus causing more problems down the line.

The manner in which Aizawa gives his students black marks instead of basic transfers to the General Course, since full expulsion from UA would be too extreme given that a 2-A does exist in canon, would mean that the moment that these black marked students graduate, they would not get basic jobs even if they graduated from the top school in Japan. There is a difference between changing courses of student and being given a black mark and while both could happen, getting a black mark is a gunshot wound to the person being kicked down the steps. Aizawa ironically is creating more villains and vigilantes on the streets by his actions and those students are very likely to die due to societal pressures and being forced into poverty. It would be an extremely minority that could have back-up plans and money to survive a black mark in Japan.

And let's not get onto Stain as he's just crazy. He would support Aizawa's expulsion of students on the basis of weeding out the weak heroes early. He just forgot that having a black mark is a death sentence in Japan.

See this is why I just don’t get the black mark thing. Like unless Aizawa is meant to be a big bad villain it makes no sense. Him temporarily expelling students to shove them into Gen Ed for a bit is much more reasonable if they need a reality check and fits his personality more. Still a bastard but not some jackass villain. And then he softens as he learns he made the wrong assumptions becoming a better teacher! See?! Way better. Instead we get this.

Also he can scare them with the idea of a black mark but not actually give them one. Fits more to with his logical ruse shit.

There’s a reason I drop canon Aizawa and it’s cause his shit makes no sense.

Stain would approve. Hes a bitch. I really do not like him.

shipping renkaza fucking sucks because you either get people who hate real enemies to lovers and call it toxic or pr*ship because they actually are enemies who want to kill each other instead of friends who bicker sometimes (these people are the weakest link and will not survive the winter)

or you get people who do ship it but only in the gooner dumbing-it-down-to-hardcore-porn way where they romanticize and get off to abuse and r*pe (these people are just gross sick individuals and i hope they go extinct)

and the few people who do see the emotional depth in the homoerotic minutes renkaza spent together and the potential in that for top tier doomed yaoi are few and far in between and i rarely find good fics that aren't just insanely ooc porn

Why Muzan’s “natural disaster” line was kind of accurate, actually

image

This Muzan line is so interesting to me because it’s the closest the manga comes to ever saying the quiet part out loud. There was nothing Muzan could’ve done to change what he became.

By the time he killed his doctor, he was already in the middle of his human to demon transition. He had pursued a cure to his illness (reasonable), his doctor had done his best to make an experimental cure for him (reasonable), the cure had unintended side effects (reasonable), and side effects had included amplified anger and murderous intent (unfortunate).

Natural disasters just happen. They don’t have agency. The reason you don’t take revenge on an erupting volcano is because it didn’t make a conscious choice to kill people. No one is to blame for the disaster. Likewise, Muzan had absolutely no agency against his fate. Even if he had started out as the world’s nicest human, even if he made exclusively good choices considering the information he was given, he would’ve ended up becoming a demon and eating people. The only immoral “choice” he made was killing his doctor, but if the medicine he was given was making him a demon anyway, the likelihood of that occurring during his first demonic rampage was extremely high. Regardless of whether he conquered the sun, whether he took his medication as prescribed, whether he was a good or bad human, he would’ve ended up with a near insatiable taste for human flesh. With no support network to hold him back from his urges until he was capable of settling down, his evil was essentially inevitable.

A lot of people say that Muzan is interesting because he’s one of the only pure evil villains with no redeeming qualities, but I disagree. He’s interesting because he’s one of the only villains who became evil by accident, in the process of pursuing something good.

On a more critical note, I think that the fact that this line from him is so clearly meant to be seen as inaccurate or bad speaks to the author’s lack of consideration for the moral implications of their plot. The moralization of illness in KnY has always bothered me. What, in the eyes of the author, should Muzan have done as a human? What is the moral of his story? Simply don’t be chronically ill? That seems a bit ableist. If you are ill, accept that you’re ill and just let yourself die as god intended? Also seems a bit ableist. Only take proven, known cures that are guaranteed to not have side effects? A little anti-science, or, more charitably, a misunderstanding of how the scientific process works… so what should Muzan have done instead? Much to think about.
