Aoi secret identity as a witch give this au a lot of potential! We know witches can make love spells, and that doing a potion wrong messes with what the spell should do, so the vibe can change drastically everyday depending on what spell Aoi is learning, be it a truth potions or dangerous sleep enchantments.

Aoi and Akane are childhood friends and Aoi have a crush on Akane, something Nene is aware of. The Aois seem very close to each other but Akane is unaware of Aoi's witch identity, so there can be a lot of mental comflict for Aoi. Maybe a part of her want to open up about her big secret, maybe she want Akane to be far away from magic and goes the extra mile to hide (does she needs glasses? Or is it a disguise?). Regardless I eat up 'secret identity' plots.

I am not sure if they are neighbors but i'll assume they are since they are childhood friends. It gotta be hard to hide magic from your neighbor/friend.

Teru works on a fast food joint and seem to enjoy making the costumers happy, sticking by their side when they eat. The burgers he serves are high calory so I can't imagine Aoi or Akane going there too much, but I can imagine something going wrong with a spell and making Teru get closer to them.

Maybe Teru learn about Aoi's secret identity on accident, forcing Aoi to be stuck with Teru and go "please don't tell anyone Minamoto" while Nene brews a potion that will erase his memories. They can bond while the potion is brewing.

Teru is so carefree here I feel like he would follow Aoi once or twice, and since he isn't a fighter, he would cause more trouble than solve it. Maybe another love spell goes wrong and Akane falls in love with Teru, or Teru falls for Aoi, and it's all a mess.

Whenever Akane and Aoi go to Teru's burger place, Teru will just sit down with them. Uninvited. They get used to him over time.

Very fun and solid au! Magic can make every scenario possible, but the au still loses points for Teru's life being so removed from the Aois + there isn't that much info on Akane.

Hanako Of The Opera.

The trio work in the same place, so there is a lot of interaction potential! There is also a power dynamic with Teru being the boss who directly order Akane and decides how many shows Aoi will do.

Akane never refers to Aoi as a friend and the ballerina make no comments on her relationship with Akane, so I don't think he is Aoi's childhood friend here. He likely use his power as the assistent manager to give her more 'time to shine' when she would much prefer to stay out of the spotlight and hear the singers: He must be the person Aoi hate the most in the opera house.

Despite arriving together, we do not know what Akane and Teru's relationship are. We don't even know if Teru sought Akane or if Akane begged him to work so he could be close to Aoi, all we know is that Aoi is why he accepted the job and that he doesn't dissobey Teru. Which gives a lot of space for Teru to tease him and make up tasks for Akane.

Teru is well liked by the people and seem to like being part of the preparations, so he must be able to use his power to have alone time with Aoi, but he hasn't shown any interest in Aoi, and neither have Aoi on him, they would speak strictly of work.

The aesthetic of the opera is nice, and there is a lot of potential for drama and character growth, which I always appreciate, but they are also very limited: they need to be in the opera house to interact and unless I start adding headcanons with no basis on the stablished au (like Aoi searching for the phantom of the opera, Teru not being fully human, Akane being poisoned, and so on), they don't have a very interesting dynamic.

Phantom Thieves.

Rating: 6.5/10

I adore the idea of Teru as the chief of the police, with a ton of power (and weapons) on his hands, and Akane being a prideful thief that feels like the entire town is his territory (hence his dislike for hanako). Both being on oposite sides instead of coworkers is amazing! We don't get any art of the two interacting but their roles and designs are more than enough to make the brain itch.

Does Akane have a civilian identity too? Does he survives purely on theft? His clothes look fancy is he rich or just that good at stealing? Does Teru have a whip to avoid killing his targets or is he purely sadistic?

There is a lot to think about, lots of fun ideas in the air! And I like that their outfits all match, trio in white let's gooo!! Unfortunetely this AU loses a million points for giving me basically nothing on Aoi: She is a waitress that Akane finds really cute and is trying to 'buy', that's all we know, I can't even tell if her workplace is a popular spot or a fancy place.

Maybe Akane steal something from her after another unsucessful attempt to buy her, considering anything that belongs to Aoi valuable enough to take, so Aoi would seek Teru and ask him over a nice cup of coffee if he can get her stolen goods back. Teru may find her and her workplace pleasant, visiting more on the few time he has a break to chat with her, or Teru would notice the phantom thief is interested in her so he'll convince Aoi to come with him and be a bait to catch Akane and lock him in prison.

I can see them interacting, and I find this au one of the most fun (They are all so different, working on completely diferent areas, making them interact and grow close would be a blast!) but it sucks that the boys have so much going on while Aoi have nothing. She would be more of a tool than a proper part of this relationship.

Bakeneko Hot Springs

Rating: 8.5/10

Akane works with Teru in a detective agency, he is just part of the staff, not a direct subordinate, he also doesn't seem super dedicated to his job, leaving Teru to wrap everything up alone during their day off. Look at the books scattered everywhere! He'll deal with it alone!

Teru does not seem to have the power to force Akane do to what he wants despite Akane calling him 'chief', so I'm sure Teru solves most cases alone.

Aoi used to have a mysterious job where she was not treated well and her diary was vandalized in it, so she did as they wanted and went away, hunting for a new job. (unrelated but her reading glasses is cute)

Considering Akane never mentions that, she hid that she was bullied from her childhood friend. She doesn't seem to have any friend besides Akane since her interests/personality seems very similar to canon (she like cats and plants/hid her struggles from her friend) and Nene is a cat in this au.

Her diary is in Teru's office, and he reffers to it as 'a case', which further makes me belive Akane is not his partner at work (he would have recognized her handwriting right away) so Teru will eventually be lead to her. Either he'll go alone through the intire case and bond with Aoi or Akane will realize it involves Aoi and they'll go to their first case as a propper team. Teru may even promote him to a permanent possition after a good report.

Now back to the hotsprings!

Teru tags along with Kou to the hot spring but seems to dislike the place, tempted to leave a one star review. So his vacation day is not going well.

Akane brought a wedding ring that he spent a year worth of salary on it and lost it. Teru found this ring and gave it to a stranger. So his dream trip is not going well.

Unfortunetely Aoi doesn't know the hot springs she is interested in working for is cursed. She won't find anything. Her job hunt won't go well.

Everyone is in a bad place, and there is a big chance of it getting worse: Anyone in the trio have a chance of turning into a cat.

There is also the potential of Akane, or Aoi, or Teru, turning into a cat and needing to ask for help. So I can see Teru talking about the wedding ring he gave to someone and making akane flip out, or making aoi go 'oh, that's why akane was so stressed and nervous' and I can also see Teru having a bad time at this in but reluntantly liking to be spoiled as a cat, or going 'hum' about watching Akane flip out about a ring... Akane being very happy yet comflicted when Aoi is super sweet with his cat form, and so on... there are so many posibilities...

In short! This one have a lot of potential, I love how intertwined they are, and the bonus of either of the three becoming a cat is SO GOOD.

Amane's Mindset & Love

Amane's Mindset

Amane lived his life being fully human. So he stuck with human moral convictions and emotions. I think that Akane, Teru and Kou (to some extent), which are all humans, represent what deep down Amane thinks about himself. Amane doesn't justify his wrong actions morally. He does them for the sake of his loved ones, but he never has thought that it's morally right to do them. He acknowledges it when he's doing something wrong.

Akane and Teru always remind him of what he did, that the murder was something that marked his existence forever, that he's evil because of it and even if he's fulfilling his duty, there's no way he could ever atone for his sins. Also, from Teru's perspective, the fact that he's a supernatural proves he's evil. "There's no such thing as a good supernatural because they could attack anyone at any moment".

That's why despite what he did, he never justified his wrong actions and actually likes it when people reminds him of them. He likes people who have a strong sense of morality because deep down, he sees himself as evil, as a muderer. That's part of the reason why he decided to give up on his future and killed himself after he killed Tsukasa.

In contrast, there’s Nene and Kou. At first, when Kou fought with Hanako, his perspective was like Teru's. He believed that Hanako must be exorcised because "he's the evil spirit of a murderer".

During this fight, Hanako told Kou that god would erase his guilt if he fulfilled his duty so he couldn't let Kou exorcise him. However, at the end of their fight, Hanako agreed with what Kou thought of him and he told Kou that he was looking forward to the day he was going to be exorcised by him.

After this fight, Kou started to see other side of Hanako. His gentler side. Kou decided he wasn't going to exorcise Hanako and he tried to justify the murder committed by Hanako. But Hanako reminded him that there's no justifiable reason to ever kill someone.

Even though Hanako reacted violently at that moment, entering a state in which he reenacted his past actions and poured out all the guilt he couldn't longer contain, Kou still doesn't deep down believe that Hanako is "just some evil spirit".

Now, in Nene's case, she became attached to him and saw him as a friend, despite Kou revealing his secret—that he was a murderer. But again, Amane reminded her "I'm a murderer. How can you see me as a friend?" Amane didn't feel that he was worthy or deserving of forgiveness, bonds, love or anything good after what he did.

After Tsukasa appeared, the guilt he feels for what he did, was very evident. He can't forgive himself for what he did in the past.

Hanako has a white and black view of morals, even thought he's a morally gray character. To him, his thoughts, his actions are "black", bad. He feels bad because of the way he is because he's capable of the worst in his own POV.

Now, his black-and-white mindset is more evident when he talks about supernaturals and humans. Amane thinks that there should be limits between humans and supernaturals because supernaturals are very different from humans.

Humans are different from supernaturals, but Amane takes it to the point of him believing that when a human becomes a supernatural, they stop being themselves, completely. To him when someone is born as a human, it's the only real part of themselves.

He thinks that once humans dies, it's over. There's no continuation of life and dead have no future. Not even if they wander the near shore. In his perspective, there's no hope once a human is dead no matter what they do.

So, Amane views humans and supernaturals in a very black-and-white spectrum. For example, one of the reasons he may want Nene to keep on living is that he thinks that after dying, she must go to the far shore to still be herself, because if she wants to stay in the near shore she must become a supernatural and if she does so, she'll "get all jumbled up" to the point that her identity will change completely because she would become an entirely different being, that "she wouldn't be Yashiro Nene anymore".

Amane's Love

Amane always keeps his feelings locked up in his heart and he has always had a hard time expressing himself since he was a little kid. For example, when Tsukasa asked Amane if he loved him, Amane didn't straight up said that he loved him too, but rather "Of course I do!" more in the sense of "isn't that obvious?" He never expressed his love in a straightforward way, unlike Tsukasa.

However, I think he was more open to expressing himself when he was a little kid, because when Nene traveled to the past and she met 8 year old Amane, he straight up expressed his attraction towards her. He wasn't as shy as when he was in middle school and he was kinda cheerful.

But when he started middle school, he began to repress what he liked and how he was feeling. I think he started to be like this because of the bullying he was suffering by his classmates (Probably), or maybe because of his parents. I don't think Tsukasa was the one hurting him because when they were younger, Tsukasa didn't show any sign of violence towards Amane and these signs of violence began to appear in the first year of middle school. Also, they were close to each other.

Amane doesn't show his love through words, but through actions. Even though he has a hard time expressing himself and seems like he doesn't care, he really does. Most of the evidence of his love shown in the story so far is with Nene. He wants the wellbeing of his loved ones and to do what's best for them from his perspective, but here's the issue: he doesn't take their feelings into account. For example, Nene wanted to escape the Picture Perfect world, but Amane didn't let her at first because he wanted her to keep on living.

Also, he was going to sacrifice Aoi in order to keep Nene alive even thought she didn't want any of it. Nene even told him that he "always decides things by himself without telling anyone".

So, he never takes into account what his loved ones are feeling or what they want. He just does what he thinks it's best for them. He wants to take control over their fates, over their choices and that crosses into "possessiveness" territory. For example, when Nene and Hanako reunited after the severance, he said to her that he "needed to breathe life into her by his own hands". So he needed to have control over the way her lifespan would be extended. He didn't want Kou or others interfering in it. He felt the need to show Nene his love in some way or other. He couldn't bear the thought of others taking his place, so he needed to do something by his own hands. Even Nene interpreted this as he wanting "to have her to himself".

However, there's also other aspect of his love, and it's that, he doesn't care if he has to sacrifice his life, existence or his future. He's willing to throw it away for the sake of his loved ones. He even gave up on going to the moon because of his brother and also after the severance, he didn't care if he was going to be exorcised by Teru. He just wanted Nene to keep on living and he got angry at her because she didn't stay in the human world.

After Amane killed his brother and himself, it's later revealed that Amane loved his brother so much, that Tsukasa became his yorishiro. Perhaps the murder and suicide were acts of Amane's love for his brother because he wanted to protect him, but in a selfish way. Even when Sakura was talking about the yorishiros, it implies that Tsukasa was "The most important thing he wanted to protect".

Conclusion

Amane's set of morals and his point of view on supernaturals and humans are black-and-white, because he adhered to human's morals and emotions as he was fully human when he was alive. Despite this, he's a morally gray character. He also thinks that once a human becomes a supernatural, they cease to be themselves and become something entirely different. Due to his perspective of morals and supernaturals, he views himself as evil and irredeemable. Teru, Akane and Kou (in the beginning) remind him of this.

Regarding the nature of his love, the way he loves is selfish in the sense that it's possessive and he does what he thinks it's best for his loved ones without regarding what they actually want, yet it's selfless at the same time because he's willing to sacrifice his future or existence to protect them. His morally gray actions stem from his deep, possessive, overprotective love.

When Tsukasa sang with Nene

It's one of my favorite Tsukasa's moments. AidaIro showed his artistic and delicate, emotional side. "Over the rainbow" is a song about hope in painful or distressing circumstances. I think the lyrics are also a reference to what he wants deep inside.

Something he longs for, maybe something ideal for him, a hope he has for better circumstances. Which also means he's in a situation he can't escape (Being the person's he loves the most and thinks that hates him, yorishiro. Being Amane's yorishiro). A situation that makes him feel hurt, a situation that he's struggling with and he wants to break free from it.

But then Nene joins in and they sing along!!! He's looking upward and ahead with a soft gaze, with a gentle smile. He also shows more of his deepest feelings in his face, the sadness but also the good memories from when he was alive, he was reminiscing about the past.

And at the same time it's a face of hope, a face of someone soon to be in a better situation, a face of someone about to be free from the chains someone else put on him. To me, it was his personal farewell before he disappears. Before Nene destroys him. His face shows it all.

I think it's one of the very few times that Tsukasa let himself to feel, he let his feelings show: Pain, hope, nostalgia and enjoyment. He was genuinely having fun singing along with Nene, he opened up a bit, he was so comfortable to express himself and Nene also got relaxed to sing along with him.

They shared something they really liked in common, that is, to sing and they did it together. It was a personal, meaningful moment between them in which he showed his innermost emotions through his facial expression, through the lyrics of the song, through his behaviour. That was unexpected and enchanting.

And I link this hope to this scene. Apart from granting Amane's wish, to bring happiness to him, to bring better circumstances for him with his ultimate sacrifice, there's his hope to disappear, to finally be free from his painful situation.

It's something really sad, his hope for himself in his current circumstances in the original timeline. He longs to be free even if it means to disappear.

He has his childish, carefree side but he also has his emotional, deep side which he almost never shows and because of that, some people tend to overlook it. I would love to learn more about his inner emotional world. We'll probably see more of it from when he was alive.

I love the AUs where Kou acidentally eat the mermaids scales and becomes Hanako assistant. Is fun to imagine how different the arcs would play out

The confession tree mini arc? The conflict would remain internal since both boys got internalized homophobia, and Kou wouldn't assume Hanako actually like him, just that he is being his mischievious playful and annoying self. Even if he did get a suspicious Hanako may actually like him he would be more awkward and uneased than anything, calling him out instead of being quiet: there will be no misunderstanding the arc would be way less dramatic and important to their character.

But the festival arc would be heartbreaking, and weight on Kou more. Cause Nene was going to wish for slender legs, and between something she wanted and saving Amane, she prioritized Amane's happiness.

But Kou wish is to give Nene more time to live. He would has to choose between saving Hanako or Nene.

So regardless of what he does he would come out believing he let one of his friends down, that it is his fault bad things happened to Nene or Hanako.
