5 Times Astronaut Jack Fischer Said Something in Space Was “Awesome”

Meet astronaut Jack Fischer…

image

He was selected as a NASA astronaut in July 2009, and is currently living and working in space for his first time. As you can imagine, going to space for the first time is both nerve-wracking and exciting. You may or may not know just how excited he actually is to be 250 miles above the Earth…To communicate his elation, he has frequently used some version of the word “awesome”.

FYI, that’s a picture of Fischer about to eat a coffee ball on station. For more on his opinion of coffee balls, check THIS out.

Let’s take a look at a few times astronaut Jack Fischer said something in space was “awesome”…

1. Burrito Smothered in Awesomesauce

Immediately following the hatch opening to the International Space Station and Jack Fischer arriving at his new orbital home, they had the chance to speak to their families. During this time, he explained to his wife what it was like to be in space…obviously using the word awesome in the process: “It’s a burrito of awesomeness, smothered in awesomesauce baby, it’s so beautiful!”

2. Awesome Views from Space

image

Astronauts commonly say that one of the best parts of being on space station is the view. Earth from 250 miles above can look stunning…or as Fischer puts it…awesome!

3. Tornado of Awesomeness

Fischer shared this video on his Twitter account on May 6 saying, “Sometimes, on a weekend, you have to spin about wildly…we can call it a tornado of awesomeness—because weightlessness is awesome!”

4. Awesome #SpaceSelfie

image

This selfie, taken during Fischer’s first-ever spacewalk is AWESOME and shows his cheesing smile from behind his spacesuit helmet. Check out a recap of Fischer’s first spacewalk, conducted on May 12, HERE.

5. Fondue Pot Bubbling Over with Awesome Sauce

In this video, also taken during Fischer’s first spacewalk on May 12, you can hear his real-time reaction to seeing the Earth from outside the space station. Describing it like a “Ginormous fondue pot, bubbling over with piping hot awesomesauce.”

Why the Burrito References?

image

You might be wondering where all this burrito talk comes from. In a pre-flight interview, Fischer explained that he doesn’t particularly like sweets…so for his birthday, his wife will commonly make him bean burritos smothered in green chili and cheese! Watch the full video for 5 facts you may not know about Fischer HERE.

The Final Problem

Hey wonderful people,

There are a lot of feelings flying around the internet about the new episode. Emotions are running very high, and it’s OK to have those.  If you’re giddy about the new episode, and you thought it was like eating grilled cheese while riding on the back of a unicorn, that’s fine.  If you’re heartbroken and gutted about the new episode and you thought it was trash on toast while sitting in a gutter, that’s fine too.  We’re happy for you if you’re happy, and if you’re sorrowful, we want you to know we are here for you.

What’s not OK is attacking other people on either side of the equation.  Discussion and passionate debate, yes.  Those are some of the most marvelous things in the world.  But kindness and courtesy are also marvelous, and we’re beginning to see people making things personal in a way that could be hurtful to others.  This is a very personal show for a lot of folks, and we’re personal about it too, right down to the last Babe.

But you know what?  Not all the Babes sail the same ships.  In fact, various ones of us sail very different ships, and while those ships are important to us, what’s FAR more important are the friendship and the loyalty and the love that being Sherlockians brings to us.  It’s important to remember that when things get heated.  No one can take away your connections, your beautiful imaginations, your creativity, or your fandom friends.

If you are upset at the moment, and we sincerely hurt for you if you are, there are some steps you can take instead of allowing yourself to be drawn into a vortex of negativity that is leading to places that could be as harmful to the speaker as those who are being spoken to.  Attacking the show creators for writing their story and wishing them dead (I’ve seen this) is wrong.  Wishing death on anyone is wrong.  Particularly if it’s to do with how they make their art.  And wishing it hurts the wisher, not just the people behind BBC Sherlock.

–Go read “The Three Garridebs” in the canon.  Then read the other 59.

–Watch some Jeremy Brett Granada Holmes–it’s all on YouTube pretty much.

–Read your favorite fanfic and revel in it.

–Keep working on your favorite WIP and revel in that.

–Watch “A Game of Shadows,” or as we call it, “A Gay of Gay.”

–Do something entirely different and give Sherlock Holmes a pass for the moment.

Whatever you do, please remember that loyalty and love are eternal and infinite, and please do no harm to yourself and to others.  Things are getting a little wild in here, and the Babes worry.  Stay safe. Stay well.

Our "Strange" Encounter With Benedict Cumberbatch

Our "Strange" Encounter With Benedict Cumberbatch

My name is Rene Rosa and I’m one of the managers over at JHU Comic Books in Manhattan. I’ve had my fair share of cool run-ins, celebrity encounters and fanboy dream moments, but nothing prepared me for what happened on April 4th, 2016. Dr. Strange was filming on 32nd street, just mere feet away from our store’s door, and as I was working, my friend Z. Lee came by. (He’s the one that took the pictures you’ve been seeing all over the net.“) Well, during the day, the crew came in to check out the place because they were shocked to see a comic book store where they were filming. The bulk of the crew is based out of the UK and there are very few comic book stores there. They apologized a bunch of times about how the street was going to be mostly closed down for the bulk of the day for shooting and many of them came in to buy stuff. Seriously, these guys were incredibly nice and considerate. Then, at one point, one of the producers joked about how great it would be to have Benedict come into the store in costume. Of course, I didn’t know he was one of the producers, at the time. I told him that if he did, I would lose my damn mind.

Our "Strange" Encounter With Benedict Cumberbatch

Photo By: Rene Rosa It started to get really cold so many more of them started coming in and I told the PA that if ANYONE on the crew needed to use the bathroom, our door was open to them. A couple of hours later and in walks Dr. Strange. Everyone there was excited, laughing and couldn’t believe it. Benedict Cumberbatch was incredibly nice, gracious and he and I went back and forth with some banter for a little bit before he had to go right back out and shoot more scenes. He didn’t have time to do much more than shake hands, talk and take a few pictures, but we totally understood that and were lucky just to have him in! Z. decided a comparison picture was in order and handed him “The Oath.” I was able to get my picture with him and then he had to go. The whole thing lasted no more than a few minutes, but luckily we were able to get some pictures of it and the very few of us that were there have some unforgettable memories.

Our "Strange" Encounter With Benedict Cumberbatch

I don’t usually get star-struck, but it’s a different situation when one of the best actors of our time is standing before you in full costume, in your store, while filming the big-budget movie of a character you’ve loved since you were a small child. I felt like a 5 year-old.

Fun Moments with Our Record Breaking Astronaut

Astronaut Scott Kelly has broken the record for longest time spent in space by a U.S. astronaut. He has spent a cumulative of 383 days in space over the course of four missions. What better way to celebrate than to highlight some of his fun moments on the internet:

A question from the president during a recent TweetChat:

image

Astronaut Scott Kelly occasionally hosts TweetChats from the International Space Station. During a recent chat, he happened to get a question from someone who lives at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue! HERE’s a recap from a similar chat from the station.

Tackling the tough questions during interviews:

image

During an interview with Katie Couric, Kelly explained what a day on the space station is really like…including the chores he can and can’t do.

The pros and cons of having roommates:

The International Space Station is an orbiting laboratory where an international crew live, work and conduct valuable research.

Getting supplies from cargo ships:

Living on the space station requires food, water and supplies. All of these things, plus experiments and other essentials are delivered to the crew via cargo ship. Learn more about our commercial resupply program HERE.

Earth Art: Out of Africa

The International Space Station’s altitude of about 250 statue miles overlooking the Earth provides a unique vantage point from which I’m able to view our world. Capturing geographical spots for Earth scientific observations is often part of my job here aboard our orbital laboratory. The images from space provide researchers on Earth with key data to better understand the planet.

But photography in space is also an enjoyable hobby. It helps to add some semblance of life balance on the scale of work and life. When you live at work for a year, this balance is very important.

The view across Earth has given me some incredible scenes. But I have most enjoyed photographing Earth with a different eye. Through a zoom lens and with the vantage point of the space station and the ever-interesting canvas of Earth, I’ve produced a series of Earth Art. Some of the most inhospitable places on Earth are also some of the most beautiful from space. The African continent is no exception.

Earth Art: Out Of Africa

I recently took this wall-worthy art photo located on the western edge of the Sahara desert at center Mauritania in Northwest Africa. There is a giant quartzite circle called Richat Structure. It is approximately 24 miles across. This volcanic bulge that never erupted and was leveled by erosion makes for interesting Earth Art.

Traveling at 17,500 mph around the globe for nearly a year, I’ve had many opportunities to capture several abstract glimpses of Africa. Here are some of them. Enjoy!

Chasing Storms at 17,500mph

Flying 250 miles above the Earth aboard the International Space Station has given me the unique vantage point from which to view our planet. Spending a year in space has given me the unique opportunity to see a wide range of spectacular storm systems in space and on Earth.

The recent blizzard was remarkably visible from space. I took several photos of the first big storm system on Earth of year 2016 as it moved across the East Coast, Chicago and Washington D.C. Since my time here on the space station began in March 2015, I’ve been able to capture an array of storms on Earth and in space, ranging from hurricanes and dust storms to solar storms and most recently a rare thunder snowstorm.

Sherlock DE

In my opinion one of the best and hilarious scenes ever!

Sherlock and Dr Watson learn BSL from a Hearing Dogs tutor
Read our BSL tutor's experience of teaching Sherlock actors Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman sign language in Sherlock: The Abominable Bride special

“Meeting Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman

“Benedict (and his famous cheekbones) was suffering from a bad cold, but he sat down and got straight on with it. He was really interested in BSL and asked intelligent questions about how signs are created, and about people signing the wrong thing by mistake.

“A few weeks later, Anna and I sat in Martin’s comfortable kitchen and he made us a cup of tea and learnt his lines in BSL. We then watched him mixing up a bowl of food for one of his dogs. It was a very frosty morning and his children were running in and out with pieces of ice and frosted leaves to show him. It was so normal and homely.  Martin picked up BSL remarkably quickly – unlike his character Dr Watson.”

Sherlock Special News für D/A/CH
